The use of structural analysis of social behavior (SASB) as an assessment tool.

Structural analysis of social behavior (SASB) is a model that can be used to assess interpersonal and intrapsychic interactions in terms of three underlying dimensions: (a) focus (other, self, introject), (b) affiliation-hostility (love-hate), and (c) interdependence-independence (enmeshment-differentiation). Assessment of individuals or groups in terms of these dimensions can be made by self-ratings on the SASB Intrex questionnaires, ratings by others using the same questionnaires, or by objective observer ratings. Data generated by questionnaires or formal codes yield identical summary param

'Dignity and respect': An example of service user leadership and co-production in mental health research.

This paper explores the methodological aspects of a user-led study investigating mental health service user experiences of targeted violence and abuse (often called 'hate crime'). 'Keeping Control' was a 16-month qualitative study, undertaken in the context of adult safeguarding reforms in England. By collecting data on service user concepts and experiences, the research sought to address a gap in research and practice knowledge relating to targeted violence, abuse and hostility against people with mental health problems. In this paper, we discuss the significance of the design and methodology

'Many die in the hurricane': An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of Adults with Psychosis and a History of Childhood Physical Abuse.

The study aimed to investigate the experience of adults with a diagnosis of psychosis and who have survived childhood physical abuse. We interviewed eight participants and used interpretative phenomenological analysis to generate themes. The main themes were of perceiving an everyday world of aggression and contempt by others, pervasive mistrust, feeling isolated and for some, attacking oneself with hate. Most participants were also able to reflect on what they saw as 'paranoia' or 'voices'. Paranoia was described as a fluctuating compulsive 'thread' of meaning, feeling and sometimes a transfo

Dr. Haakon Sæthre: a Norwegian neuroscientist and his resistance against Nazi Germany.

Dr. Haakon Sæthre was a leader of Norwegian neurology and psychiatry. He was resourceful, compassionate and had immense pride in his independent homeland. He described Sæthre-Chotzen syndrome (acrocephalosyndactyly type III). When Nazi Germany occupied Norway during World War II, Sæthre fearlessly and actively resisted, from revoking his medical association membership, to hiding persecuted Jews as patients in his psychiatric ward and aiding in their escape to Sweden, to managing the largest "illegal" food warehouse in Oslo with Danish humanitarian aid. As a prominent and noticeable citizen, he

Digital She-nanigans: Social media users' response toward online hostilities targeting a female science communicator with marginalized identities.

Online hostility poses a growing societal challenge, yet quantitative evidence on how social media users respond to different kinds of hostility targeting different identities is limited, even though insights into bystander perceptions are detrimental to combat the online hate endemic. This online experiment (N = 461) examines cognitive (perceived acceptability), affective (negative emotions), and behavioral (intervention intentions) responses to varyingly hostile comments (impolite vs uncivil vs intolerant) directed at a female science communicator with different ethnic (Black vs White) and L

Exploring Guilt Differences in Grandiose Narcissism, Vulnerable Narcissism, and Malignant Self-Regard.

Narcissistic personality disorder is a heterogeneous and complex pathology which manifests itself very differently in individuals. The aim of the present study was to analyze differences and similarities in morality and sensitivity to feelings of guilt among grandiose narcissism (GN), vulnerable narcissism (VN), and malignant self-regard (MSR). We expected that MSR and VN would be most sensitive to deontological and altruistic guilt, and that MSR and VN would have higher levels of moral standards than GN. A nonclinical sample of 752 participants was evaluated. Results showed a significant asso

How to play with patients who would rather remain remote.

Playful technique with negativistic, schizoid patients is described and further explained. They are seen as closing their mind, imagination, needs, and feelings to protect themselves against the terrifying dangers of human relatedness (vulnerability, need, hurt, loss, fusion, destruction). The analyst, while respecting the schizoid patient's need for protection, affirmation, and validation, seeks creative ways of engaging the patient more closely. Playful technique with schizoid patients combines the analyst's sensitive, playful attitude with an invitation to playful action as an experiment wi

Sex-selective abortion bans and the birth outcomes of Asian immigrants.

The pro-life movement in the United States has achieved significant legislative victories in restricting abortion access. Among these, sex-selective abortion bans (SSABs)-prohibitions on abortions sought based on fetal sex-have garnered little scholarly attention. Advocates of SSABs often invoke xenophobic stereotypes, claiming that Asian immigrants hold a cultural preference for sons and engage in sex-selective abortions of female fetuses. This study examines the impact of SSABs on Asian immigrant mothers' birth outcomes, hypothesizing that these laws foster a stigmatizing social climate that

A Multi-Goal, Multi-Action, Cognitive-Affective Model for Understanding Gatekeepers' Intention to Report Deviant Close-Others.

Reporting a close-other to authorities can save lives from extreme deviant behaviors but it also poses a dilemma as gatekeepers struggle between their relationship and societal obligations. We propose and test a multi-goal, multi-action, cognitive-affective model to elucidate this decision-making process. Across various contexts (hate crimes, problem gambling, and violent extremism), gatekeepers' motivational strength to report and not report their close-other and their anticipated regret toward both actions simultaneously contributed to the variance of reporting intentions (30-70%). Notably,

Grievance fuels aggressive intergroup inclinations and justification of political violence through hatred rather than anger.

Grievance-the feeling of being or having been collectively wronged by an outgroup-has gained attention in majority groups facing perceived status threats or norm transgressions. Although grievance can elicit negative emotions, its role in shaping violence-related tendencies remains unclear. This research examines the emotional pathways linking grievance to violence justification and aggressive intergroup inclinations among majority group members. Across three studies (correlational, field-based with active protesters and experimental) within the Catalonia-Spanish State conflict, we explore whe

Sociodemographic Characteristics Associated with Lifetime and Recent Traumatic Experiences Among People Living with HIV in Florida.

Trauma prevalence among people with HIV (PWH) exceeds that of the general population by 2 times in the United States. Conducted within the Florida Cohort (2019-2022; n = 509), this study aimed to (1) describe the prevalence of 12 types of traumatic experiences (TEs) over a lifetime and within the past 12 months, and (2) describe whether the prevalence of lifetime and past 12-month traumatic experiences varied by age, race/ethnicity, sex assigned at birth, and sexual orientation among PWH in Florida. Participants were predominantly non-heterosexual men (42%) aged 50 + years (59%), identified as

Estimating affective polarization on a social network.

Concerns about polarization and hate speech on social media are widespread. Affective polarization, i.e., hostility among partisans, is crucial in this regard as it links political disagreements to hostile language online. However, only a few methods are available to measure how affectively polarized an online debate is, and the existing approaches do not investigate jointly two defining features of affective polarization: hostility and social distance. To address this methodological gap, we propose a network-based measure of affective polarization that combines both aspects - which allows the

Statin-related myopathies.

Statins are the Marmite ('You either love it or hate it!') of the drug world, both in terms of therapeutic benefit and risk of side effects. Proponents think that they are potential life-savers, opponents that their main benefit is lining the pockets of pharma. Some consider side effects to be a major issue, outweighing any therapeutic benefit, others that they are rare and essentially innocuous. Statin-induced myalgia is relatively common but often mild and for most people does not limit treatment. In others, reducing the dose or changing the preparation may help. In all, withdrawal of the st

Interventions Highlighting Hypocrisy Reduce Collective Blame of Muslims for Individual Acts of Violence and Assuage Anti-Muslim Hostility.

Collectively blaming groups for the actions of individuals can license vicarious retribution. Acts of terrorism by Muslim extremists against innocents, and the spikes in anti-Muslim hate crimes against innocent Muslims that follow, suggest that reciprocal bouts of collective blame can spark cycles of violence. How can this cycle be short-circuited? After establishing a link between collective blame of Muslims and anti-Muslim attitudes and behavior, we used an "interventions tournament" to identify a successful intervention (among many that failed). The "winning" intervention reduced collective

Gender violence: transgender experiences with violence and discrimination.

There is a pervasive pattern of discrimination and prejudice against transgendered people within society. Both economic discrimination and experiencing violence could be the result of a larger social climate that severely sanctions people for not conforming to society's norms concerning gender; as such, both would be strongly associated with each other. Questionnaires were distributed to people either through events or through volunteers, and made available upon the World Wide Web. A sample of 402 cases was collected over the span of 12 months (April 1996-April 1997). We found that over half t

Whereas Prof. v.Frisch of the other surgical clinic who also had visited Pasteur carried out animal experiments which urged him to disapprove Pasteur's human rabies vaccination. Destructive women and the men who can't leave them: pathological dependence or pathological omnipotence?

Clinicians have focused more on the troubling issue of women who are dominated and abused by men than they have on those occasions where men are abused by women. While usually not involving physical abuse, the destructiveness of some women, expressed in terms of harsh and destructive verbal and interpersonal behavior can be so striking and persistent that it should remain of interest to psychoanalysts. This clinical paper examines two examples of male patients who, while accomplished in many spheres of their lives, are nevertheless engaged in marriages to women whose hateful behavior toward th
