Coming to Terms with the Alcohol-Cancer Link: A Work in Progress.

Although substantial evidence links even moderate levels of alcohol consumption to breast, colorectal, and five other cancers, awareness in the US population of this evidence is suboptimal. That lack of awareness-complemented by industry resistance to policy change-has hindered efforts to address alcohol use in cancer prevention. The article by Hawk and colleagues in this issue reports that 86% of surveyed NCI-Designated Cancer Centers believe they have an obligation to educate the public about the cancer harms associated with alcohol, a promising finding given that people trust clinicians mor

An evolutionary deep learning soft sensor model based on random forest feature selection technique for penicillin fermentation process.

Accurate and reliable measurement of key biological parameters during penicillin fermentation is of great significance for improving penicillin production. In this research context, a new hybrid soft sensor model method based on RF-IHHO-LSTM (random forest-improved Harris hawks optimization-long short-term memory) is proposed for penicillin fermentation processes. Firstly, random forest (RF) is used for feature selection of the auxiliary variables for penicillin. Next, improvements are made for the Harris hawks optimization (HHO) algorithm, including using elite opposition-based learning stra

Playing it by ear: gregarious sparrows recognize and respond to isolated wingbeat sounds and predator-based cues.

The ability to detect an incoming attack provides a final opportunity for an animal to avoid predation. In birds, vision is the main sensory mode in detecting attacks, but auditory cues likely play an important role. The role of auditory cues from predators themselves remains largely unstudied. We evaluated the ability of free-living, gregarious sparrows (Passerellidae) to recognize attacks based on the non-vocal sounds made by predators or indirect auditory cues of ongoing attacks, mainly in the form of brief wingbeat sequences from predatory and non-predatory birds. Behavioral responses to p

First detection of Bacillus anthracis in feces of free-ranging raptors from central Argentina.

Prevalence of anthrax spores in feces of raptors was determined from samples collected in November-December 2000 and April-May 2001 in an agricultural region of Santa Fé province, Argentina. Feces were tested from 48 birds of six raptor species. One of 14 chimango caracaras (Milvago chimango) and one of eight road-side hawks (Buteo magnirostris) tested positive. The prevalence of Bacillus anthracis spores in feces for the six species was 4% (n=48). The prevalence was 7% (n=14) for chimango caracaras, 13% for road-side hawks (n=8), and 0% for the remaining species (Burrowing owl [Speotyto cunic

Research on the perception method of tiny objects in low-light and wide-field video.

At present, many trackers exhibit commendable performance in well-illuminated scenarios but overlook target tracking in low-light environments. As night falls, the tracker's accuracy drops dramatically. Challenges such as high image resolution, intricate backgrounds, uneven illumination, and the resemblance between targets and backgrounds in Hawk-Eye surveillance videos make tracking small objects in low-light and wide-field scenarios exceedingly difficult for previous trackers. To address these challenges, this paper introduces an innovative approach by integrating the difference constraint m

Effects of host sociality on ectoparasite population biology.

Theory predicts a positive relationship between parasite infection intensity and host density. However, this generalization is complicated in natural systems by differences in life history among parasite taxa, e.g., transmissibility. Accordingly, predictions relating host density to parasite load should be specific to each parasite taxon. To illustrate this, we studied parasites that differed greatly in life history in the context of the Galapagos hawk's (Buteo galapagoensis) variably cooperative mating system. Two louse (Phthiraptera) species were collected: Colpocephalum turbinatum (Amblycer

DETERMINING RAPTOR SPECIES AND TISSUE SENSITIVITY FOR IMPROVED WEST NILE VIRUS SURVEILLANCE.

Raptors are a target sentinel species for West Nile virus (WNV) because many are susceptible to WNV disease, they are easily sighted because of their large size, and they often occupy territories near human settlements. Sick and dead raptors accumulate at raptor and wildlife rehabilitation clinics. However, investigations into species selection and specimen type for efficient detection of WNV are lacking. Accordingly, we evaluated dead raptors from north-central Colorado, US and southeast Wyoming, US over a 4-yr period. Nonvascular mature feathers ("quill"), vascular immature feathers ("pulp")

Molecular and morphological divergence in a pair of bird species and their ectoparasites.

In an evolutionary context, parasites tend to be morphologically conservative relative to their hosts. However, the rate of neutral molecular evolution across many parasite lineages is faster than in their hosts. Although this relationship is apparent at the macroevolutionary scale, insight into the processes underpinning it may be gained through investigations at the microevolutionary scale. Birds and their ectoparasitic lice have served as important natural experiments in co-evolution. Here, we compared mitochondrial and morphological divergence in 2 recently diverged avian host lineages and

Subarachnoid haemorrhage associated with midventricular Tako-Tsubo syndrome.

BACKGROUND: A new form of Tako-Tsubo cardiomyopathy has recently been described as a midventricular localisation, opposite to the apical typical form. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a patient who presented with a sudden cardiac death and an acute coronary syndrome. However, coronary arteries were normal and the left ventriculography showed a midventricular ballooning Tako-Tsubo syndrome associated with a hawk's beak. A cerebral CT scan revealed a massive subarachnoid haemorrhage in relation with a left sylvian aneurysm rupture leading to the death of the patient. CONCLUSION: This case re

Detection of a novel genotype of Chlamydia buteonis in falcons from the Emirates.

Chlamydiaceae are a family of obligate intracellular bacterial pathogens that affect both humans and animals. Recently, a new species named Chlamydia (C.) buteonis was isolated from hawks. In this study, we aimed to investigate the prevalence of Chlamydiaceae in 60 falcons that underwent a routine health check at a specialized clinic in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Using real-time PCR, we analyzed cloacal and tracheal swabs from these birds and found that 39 of them tested positive for Chlamydiaceae. Subsequent real-time PCR assays specific for C. psittaci, C. abortus, C. avium, and C. gallina

Developmental ocular disease of raptors.

Sixteen raptors, including one eagle, two falcons, five hawks and eight owls, were found to have developmental ocular lesions. The most common lesion was microphthalmia. Other findings included cataract, microphakia, retinal dysplasia, malformation of the ciliary body, choroid and pecten, and lentoid formation. Specific causes for these lesions could not be determined. It is hypothesized that developmental ocular disease probably is more common than available reports indicate.

The neuroethological approach to defense in rabbit.

In this chapter we review the neuroethological approach correlating behavior and dorsal hippocampal activity recorded in rabbits in laboratory conditions or in a semi-natural enclosure and exposed to intra and interspecific confrontations. Behaviors of the same modality, i.e., immobility, and the same motivation, i.e., defense, can be distinguished by a different pattern of hippocampal activity, in terms of the relative ratio of RSA (rhythmic slow activity), and LIA (large amplitude irregular activity), and of RSA frequencies. In addition, the frequency and the duration of RSA episodes represe

The Impact of Disease Activity Criteria on Extending Injection Intervals in Real-World Patients with Neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

INTRODUCTION: In clinical practice, intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) injection intervals for patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) are based on disease activity, with active or recurrent disease requiring more frequent injections. Injection interval modification criteria differ from those used in clinical trials, thereby potentially affecting treatment outcomes. This analysis evaluated the potential impact of applying disease activity criteria from recent clinical trials (TENAYA/LUCERNE; HAWK/HARRIER; PULSAR) on the decision to extend

Brain Tumor Classification Using Meta-Heuristic Optimized Convolutional Neural Networks.

The field of medical image processing plays a significant role in brain tumor classification. The survival rate of patients can be increased by diagnosing the tumor at an early stage. Several automatic systems have been developed to perform the tumor recognition process. However, the existing systems could be more efficient in identifying the exact tumor region and hidden edge details with minimum computation complexity. The Harris Hawks optimized convolution network (HHOCNN) is used in this work to resolve these issues. The brain magnetic resonance (MR) images are pre-processed, and the noisy

First report of Sarcocystis halieti in Asia: the genetic confirmation in muscles of the Eurasian sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus) from Iran.

Previous studies showed that the Eurasian sparrowhawk Accipiter nisus (Linnaeus, 1758) acts as the definitive host of the Sarcocystis halieti (Apicomplexa: Sarcocystidae) Gjerde, Vikøren et Hamnes, 2017. Herein, we report macrocysts of S. halieti in the pectoral muscle of a Sparrowhawk in the west of Iran. Between September 2019 and December 2023, a total of 55 wild birds belonging to 8 orders, 9 families, 18 genera, and 21 species were examined in Hamedan province, western Iran. In one Eurasian sparrowhawk, macroscopic cysts resembling rice grains were observed in the breast muscle of the bir

External parasites of raptors (Falconiformes and Strigiformes): identification in an ex situ population from Mexico.

Raptorial birds harbor a variety of ectoparasites and the mayority of them are host specific. The aim of this study was to identify the ectoparasites of captive birds of prey from Mexico, as well as to verify their impact in the health of infested birds. Raptorial birds were confiscated and kept in captivity at the Centro de Investigación y Conservación de Vida Silvestre (CIVS) in Los Reyes La Paz, Mexico State. Seventy-four birds of prey (66 Falconiformes and eigth Strigiformes) of 15 species were examined for the presence of ectoparasites. We examined both juvenile and adult birds from both

Intradural lumbar disc herniations at the L1-L2 level: A case study and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Intradural disc herniations (IDHs) are rare occurrences (0.26-0.30%), and most frequently involve the lumbar spine at the L4-L5 level. Here, we present a patient with an L1-L2 IDH and reviewed the current literature. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 65-year-old female presented with the acute onset of bilateral paraparesis accompanied by urinary dysfunction. The lumbar MRI showed a mass at the L1-L2 level with caudal migration, accompanied by a positive "hawk-beak" sign. At surgery, consisting of a L1-L2 laminectomy, a large IDH was encountered responsible for marked cauda equina/root compress

The respiratory system influences flight mechanics in soaring birds.

The subpectoral diverticulum (SPD) is an extension of the respiratory system in birds that is located between the primary muscles responsible for flapping the wing1,2. Here we survey the pulmonary apparatus in 68 avian species, and show that the SPD was present in virtually all of the soaring taxa investigated but absent in non-soarers. We find that this structure evolved independently with soaring flight at least seven times, which indicates that the diverticulum might have a functional and adaptive relationship with this flight style. Using the soaring hawks Buteo jamaicensis and Buteo swain

[Residual chlorinated pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls in the eggs and adipose tissue of wild birds].

In 1983 and 1984, in the State Veterinary Institute at Jihlava, 129 samples of eggs of wild birds of 14 species were analyzed coming from different regions of the Czech Socialist Republic for the presence of residues of chlorinated pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB). Apart from this, nine samples of hawk fat and 27 samples of buzzard fat were examined. The method of gas chromatography with a detector of electron capture was used for the analysis. The analyzed samples were found to contain residues of PCB, DDT (and mainly its metabolite DDE), HCB, alpha-HCH, gamma-HCH. No residues o
