Not just what is taught, but how it is lived: socially accountable education in health professions education.

Social accountability (SA) is a defining institutional mandate in health professions education (HPE), yet how educational approaches associated with SA are experienced in practice remains insufficiently understood. Rather than examining what these approaches aim to achieve, this study explores how they are encountered, interpreted, and made meaningful by those directly involved. We conducted an interpretive descriptive study using rich picture interviews combined with semi-structured interviews with 46 participants, including learners, clinical teachers, community organization members, patient

Development of higher-order thinking in health profession education: A comprehensive toolkit for medical educators.

BACKGROUND: Higher-order thinking (HOT) is widely recognized as an essential objective of health profession education (HPE). Based on Lipman's three-dimensional model of thinking, we investigated strategies for the development of HOT including critical thinking (CT), creative thinking, and caring thinking in HPE in three consecutive studies. Fostering students' CT is regarded as an outcome of HPE. However, there is the limited level of consensus on educational interventions for CT development. In view of some of the controversies surrounding the development of CT skills and dispositions in HPE

CBE and the Missing 'E': Making Competency-Based Education an Equitable Framework for Global Health Professions Education.

It is generally assumed that competency-based health professions education (CBHPE) is a positive and ongoing educational reform. However, the assumption that CBHPE naturally leads to more equitable outcomes has not been thoroughly examined. This 'Eye Opener' identifies global challenges in implementing equitable CBHPE, with particular attention to majority-world (low- and middle-income) contexts. These tensions include: 1) variable approaches to adoption that limit transferability, 2) uneven infrastructure for implementation and innovation, 3) export of predeveloped conceptual frameworks that

Distressed or De-stressed? Crafting "Mental Health" in University Peer Education and Health Promotion.

In recent years, universities have demonstrated heightened recognition of and concern for students' mental health by expanding mental health services as well as campus-wide mental health promotion campaigns. This article examines peer education -- a growing initiative on American campuses in which students work with their institution to create and deliver health education and awareness campaigns to their peers. I present findings from an ethnographic study including 30 interviews with student peer health educators and their supervisory staff, participant observation among three university prog

Efficacy of health ecology-based health education on early rehabilitation outcomes in stroke patients.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a leading global cause of disability and mortality in adults, and early rehabilitation is critical for improving patients' functional recovery and quality of life; however, conventional rehabilitation models often focus solely on medical interventions and overlook the impact of the patient's comprehensive ecological environment on recovery, making it necessary to explore more holistic intervention approaches. To investigate the efficacy of health ecology theory-based health education in early stroke rehabilitation and its impacts on neurological/motor/cognitive function,

Does the public health education affect health inequality among the migrant population in China?

BACKGROUND: As an essential component of public health infrastructure, public health education plays an important role in advancing health equity. In China, the large migrant population, while contributing substantially to socioeconomic development, continues to face significant health risks and inequalities due to frequent rural-to-urban mobility and occupational transitions. These issues not only undermine the well-being of migrants but also impede balanced social and economic progress. In this context, the present study systematically investigated the impact of public health education on he

Impacts of continuing education for health professionals in primary health care: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Continuing Health Education (CHE) is an essential strategy for the continuous qualification of Primary Health Care (PHC) professionals, promoting knowledge updating and improving the quality of services. In Brazil, this process is especially relevant given the challenges faced by the Unified Health System (SUS) and the need for training aligned with local demands. Understanding the impact of CHE actions in PHC is crucial to identify their effects on professional practice and health outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To identify and analyze the evidence on the impacts of CHE for health profess

Training on Corrections and Health Within U.S. Academic Health Professions Education: A Scoping Review.

Despite the scale, inequity, and consequences of mass incarceration, health care provider knowledge and awareness on correctional health remain limited. Understanding the educational experiences of health professions learners and the studies used to evaluate them can provide useful information about current gaps to guide future curricular improvement. To address this need, we conducted a scoping review of peer-reviewed studies examining United States-based academic health professions educational programs on correctional health. Studies were coded based on study characteristics, learner outcome

Professional Development on Sexual Health Education Is Associated With Coverage of Sexual Health Topics.

BACKGROUND: Sexual health education plays a vital role in preventing adverse consequences of sexual behavior. Data are limited on how professional development (PD) for teachers is associated with teaching sexual health content. METHOD: We used data from the 2014 School Health Policies and Practices Study, a cross-sectional survey that included a nationally representative sample of middle and high school health education courses (n = 328; 96.2% of those sampled). We examined whether teacher characteristics and receipt of PD on four sexual health domains (human sexuality and the prevention of p

The military health system: a community of solutions for medical education, health care delivery, and public health.

Multiple strategies have been proposed to improve health care in the United States. These include the development of communities of solution (COSs), implementation of patient-centered medical homes (PCMHs), and lengthening family medicine residency training. There is scant literature on how to build and integrate these ideal models of care, and no literature about how to build a model of care integrating all 3 strategies is available. The Military Health System has adopted the PCMH model and will offer some 4-year family medicine residency positions starting in 2013. Lengthening residency trai

Longitudinal evaluation of peer health education on a college campus: impact on health behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: The authors investigated the longitudinal impact of peer health education on the health behaviors of undergraduate students pertaining to alcohol and drug use, eating and nutrition, and sexual health. PARTICIPANTS: From fall 2003 to spring 2006, the authors annually administered a Web-based survey to a cohort of 2,000 randomly selected undergraduate students. RESULTS: Students who had contact with peer health educators were significantly more likely over time than other students to report less alcohol consumption and fewer related negative consequences. Results also show that stud

Receipt of school health education and school health service among adolescent immigrants in Massachusetts.

This study assessed whether immigrant adolescents receive health education and services in schools at levels comparable to native-born peers. Surveys from 2,635 8th and 10th graders allowed comparisons between students living in the United States "always" (n = 2,080), "more than six years" (n = 299), and "six years or less" (n = 191). Immigrant students were equally likely to receive health education, more likely to use peer counseling or support groups (p < .001), and less likely to use health services (p < .05). They communicated more often with staff (p < .05), were more concerned about men

Learner-Educator Co-creation of Student Assessment in Health Professional Education Courses: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Co-creation means engaging learners in working collaboratively to make decisions about course planning, implementation, or student assessment. Involving students in these decisions potentially enhances learning. When co-creation is part of assessment, it may reach more learners but may also pose pragmatic challenges. In this review, we focused on co-creation of assessment that may occur at any time during a health professional course. Systematic examination of learner-educator co-creation is needed to inform how educators can engage strategically in co-creation with healthcare stud
