Copper-doped carbon dots nanozymes with dual peroxidase/catalase activities for synergistic ROS-mediated ultra-potent MRSA eradication and wound healing.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections threaten global public health, demanding innovative antibiotic-free antibacterial strategies to overcome conventional therapeutic limitations. Herein, copper-doped carbon dots (Cu-CDs) were synthesized via a facile one-pot hydrothermal method, featuring dual peroxidase (POD)- and catalase (CAT)-like nanozyme activities. In vitro antibacterial assays demonstrated concentration-dependent MRSA eradication, with minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) of 1.0 μg/mL for Cu-CDs alone and 0.25 μg/mL for Cu-CDs in combination with H2O2, y

Prophylactic treatment with the nucleoside analogue 2'-C-methylcytidine completely prevents transmission of norovirus.

OBJECTIVES: Norovirus outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis are highly prevalent, extensive and can disturb the functioning of health institutions, leading to the closure of hospital wards and causing life-threatening infections in long-term care facilities. There is no vaccine available; hence there is a pressing need for antivirals for the treatment (in immunodeficient patients) and prophylaxis of norovirus infections. We explored in a mouse model whether an inhibitor of norovirus replication can prevent/reduce transmission of the virus. METHODS: We reported recently that the viral polymerase

The summer colonies: 'custodians' of the health of the young. Prophylaxis of infectious diseases and educational purposes in the reports of the school medical inspector Benedetto Barni (1893-1970) in the 1950s.

Starting from the 1950s, climatic-prophylactic colonies for children took on characteristics that were partly different from those of their predecessors. From their origins until the years immediately following the Second World War, these facilities had the stated aims of education, prevention and cure for poor and malnourished children. In the mid-20th century, however, a change took place; the colonies no longer catered exclusively for the less privileged and most fragile, but rather for an economically and culturally heterogeneous population, while still maintaining the purpose of health pr

Increasing childhood vaccination coverage of the refugee and migrant population in Greece through the European programme PHILOS, April 2017 to April 2018.

After the 2016 Balkan route border closures, vaccination of refugee children in Greece was mainly performed by non-governmental organisations. Activities varied between camps, resulting in heterogeneity of vaccination coverage (VC). In April 2017, the European programme 'PHILOS - Emergency health response to refugee crisis' took over vaccination coordination. Interventions were planned for the first time for refugee children in the community and unaccompanied minors at safe zones. From April 2017-April 2018, 57,615 vaccinations were performed against measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) (21,031), dipht

Enhancing laboratory capacity during Ebola virus disease (EVD) heightened surveillance in Liberia: lessons learned and recommendations.

INTRODUCTION: Following a declaration by the World Health Organization that Liberia had successfully interrupted Ebola virus transmission on May 9th, 2015; the country entered a period of enhanced surveillance. The number of cases had significantly reduced prior to the declaration, leading to closure of eight out of eleven Ebola testing laboratories. Enhanced surveillance led to an abrupt increase in demand for laboratory services. We report interventions, achievements, lessons learned and recommendations drawn from enhancing laboratory capacity. METHODS: Using archived data, we reported befo

Pitfalls of practicing cancer epidemiology in resource-limited settings: the case of survival and loss to follow-up after a diagnosis of Kaposi's sarcoma in five countries across sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: Survival after diagnosis is a fundamental concern in cancer epidemiology. In resource-rich settings, ambient clinical databases, municipal data and cancer registries make survival estimation in real-world populations relatively straightforward. In resource-poor settings, given the deficiencies in a variety of health-related data systems, it is less clear how well we can determine cancer survival from ambient data. METHODS: We addressed this issue in sub-Saharan Africa for Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), a cancer for which incidence has exploded with the HIV epidemic but for which survival

Collateral damage: the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the care of a patient with tuberculous neuroretinitis in Lagos, Nigeria.

Tuberculous neuroretinis, a relatively rare manifestation of extra-pulmonary tuberculosis, is characterized by optic disc edema, peripapillary and macula swelling, with hard exudates forming a partial or complete 'macular star' While the disease may present a diagnostic challenge for Ophthalmologists, prognosis is usually good, with proper management. The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has presented a healthcare delivery dilemma in many parts of the world, with poor accessibility to, and under-utilization of, important healthcare services by non-COVID-19-related cases. Herein is

Non-pharmaceutical interventions to prevent community transmission of infectious diseases with pandemic potential-an umbrella review and evidence map.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, most countries implemented non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) to mitigate virus transmission and decrease morbidity and mortality. The aim of this umbrella review was to identify and map systematic reviews on the effectiveness of NPIs to reduce widespread community transmission of infectious diseases with pandemic potential. We searched electronic databases (Medline, Embase, Scopus, INAHTA [International Network of Agencies for Health Technology Asseesment], and World Health Organization COVID-19) and websites (January 2024). Systematic reviews on NPIs during

Global trends in pediatric burn injuries and care capacity from the World Health Organization Global Burn Registry.

BACKGROUND: Burn injuries are a major cause of death and disability globally. The World Health Organization (WHO) launched the Global Burn Registry (GBR) to improve understanding of burn injuries worldwide, identify prevention targets, and benchmark acute care. We aimed to describe the epidemiology, risk factors, and outcomes of children with burns to demonstrate the GBR's utility and inform needs for pediatric burn prevention and treatment. METHODS: We performed descriptive analyses of children age ≤ 18 years in the WHO GBR. We also described facility-level capacity. Data were extracted in S

Assessment of left atrial functions in cardiac syndrome X.

INTRODUCTION: Maternity unit closures in rural and remote settings of Australia have left a substantial gap in services for pregnant women. In the absence of midwives, and when women are unable to attend a maternity facility, registered nurses (RNs) are required to fill the void. While maternity education can attempt to prepare RNs for such encounters, there is little documented to suggest it meets all their physical and psychological needs. The existing challenges for health professionals, practising a vast generalist scope of practice while living and working in a rural and remote location,

Readiness of public schools before reopening during COVID-19 pandemic: School-based cross-sectional survey in southern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: School closures in response to the COVID-19 impacted children's education, protection, and wellbeing. After understanding these impacts and that children were not super spreaders, countries including Ethiopia decided to reopen schools with specified preconditions. But when deciding to reopen schools, the benefits and risks across education, public health and socio-economic factors have to be evaluated. However, there was information gap on status of schools as per preconditions. Hence, this study was designed to investigate status of schools in Southern Ethiopia. METHODS: School b

A Survey on Changes in Long-Term Care Service Utilization Among Individuals With Dementia During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

AIM: During the COVID-19 pandemic, long-term care (LTC) providers limited services, and many persons with dementia (PWDs) avoided contact. This study examined whether reduced service use was driven primarily by provider-imposed restrictions or user concerns about infection. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Japan (January-February 2023) among 436 care managers to assess changes in operations, user intentions, and living conditions of PWDs. Hierarchical logistic regression identified predictors of reduced use, and structural equation modeling (SEM) explored associations among
