The perspectives of injection drug users regarding safer injecting education delivered through a supervised injecting facility.

BACKGROUND: Unsafe injection practices are prevalent among injection drug users (IDU) and have resulted in numerous forms of drug-related harm including HIV/HCV transmission and other bacterial and viral infections. North America's first supervised injection facility (SIF) was established in Vancouver in order to address injection-related harms among IDU. This study sought to examine injection drug users' experiences receiving safer injecting education in the context of a SIF. METHODS: Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with 50 individuals recruited from a cohort of SIF use

Service providers' experiences of disrespectful and abusive behavior towards women during facility based childbirth in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Disrespect and abuse (D&A) of women during childbirth by the attending staff in health facilities has been widely reported in many countries. Although D&A in labor rooms is recognized as a deterrent to maternal health service utilization, approaches to defining, classifying, and measuring D&A are still at an early stage of development. This study aims to enhance understanding of service providers' experiences of D&A during facility based childbirth in health facilities in Addis Ababa. METHODS: A facility based cross-sectional study was conducted in August 2013 in one hospital and

Effective non-drug interventions for improving outcomes and quality of maternal health care in sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Many interventions have been implemented to improve maternal health outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Currently, however, systematic information on the effectiveness of these interventions remains scarce. We conducted a systematic review of published evidence on non-drug interventions that reported effectiveness in improving outcomes and quality of care in maternal health in SSA. METHODS: African Journals Online, Bioline, MEDLINE, Ovid, Science Direct, and Scopus databases were searched for studies published in English between 2000 and 2015 and reporting on the effectiveness o

Variations in the outcomes of care provided in Pennsylvania nursing homes. Facility and environmental correlates.

This research study utilizes indicators from federal and state surveys to evaluate variation in outcomes in 438 Medicare certified skilled nursing care facilities in Pennsylvania. First, a standardization function adjusting for patient characteristics known to influence outcomes was developed and estimated. The relationships between organizational and environmental characteristics and the chosen outcome indicators (i.e., differences between the actual and expected rate of mortality, pressure ulcers, urethral catheterization and physical restraints) were then analyzed by weighted least squares

Inclusive health: modeling COVID-19 in correctional facilities and communities.

BACKGROUND: Mass incarceration, commonly associated with overcrowding and inadequate health resources for incarcerated people, creates a fertile environment for the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in U.S. correctional facilities. The exact role that correctional facilities play in enhancing COVID-19 spread and enabling community re-emergence of COVID-19 is unknown. METHODS: We constructed a novel stochastic model of COVID-19 transmission to estimate the impact of correctional facilities, specifically jails and state prisons, for enhancing disease transmission and enabling di

Rodent and Ectoparasite-Borne Disease Surveillance Support During the Balikatan Exercise in 2024 and 2025.

Zoonotic diseases are a primary threat to military readiness during deployments in the Asia-Pacific region. To characterize these risks, we conducted a multi-site, multi-year 'One Health' biosurveillance study during the Balikatan (BK) 2024 and 2025 exercises in the Philippines, sampling rodents, ectoparasites, and the environment at four key training locations on Luzon Island. A comprehensive biosurveillance study at four BK training sites revealed distinct, evolving, and site-specific zoonotic disease risks that require tailored health protection strategies. The risk is most acute at Clark A

Systematic review and meta-analysis: association between water and sanitation environment and maternal mortality.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether the lack of water or the lack of sanitation facilities in either the home or in health facilities is associated with an increased risk of maternal mortality and to quantify the effect sizes. METHODS: Systematic review of published literature in Medline, Embase, Popline and Africa Wide EBSCO 1980. RESULTS: Fourteen articles were found. Four of five ecological studies that considered sanitation found that poor sanitation was associated with higher maternal mortality. Meta-analysis of adjusted estimates in individual-level studies indicated that women in households

From the One Health Perspective: Schistosomiasis Japonica and Flooding.

Schistosomiasis is a water-borne parasitic disease distributed worldwide, while schistosomiasis japonica localizes in the People's Republic of China, the Philippines, and a few regions of Indonesia. Although significant achievements have been obtained in these endemic countries, great challenges still exist to reach the elimination of schistosomiasis japonica, as the occurrence of flooding can lead to several adverse consequences on the prevalence of schistosomiasis. This review summarizes the influence of flooding on the transmission of schistosomiasis japonica and interventions responding to

Aspergillus fumigatus--a ubiquitous foe.

Aspergillus, a fungus whose spores are ubiquitous in the environment, and are normally found in air, can be a significant issue in healthcare premises, and especially in hospital ventilation systems. Here Andrew Poplett, an engineer with over 28 years' healthcare building services engineering experience, and an Authorised Engineer for both specialist ventilation and water quality, explains its occurrence, spread, and prevalence. He discusses how estates and facilities personnel, in conjunction with their clinical and infection control counterparts, can act to control and manage Aspergillus, an

Notes from the field: Outbreak of severe respiratory illness in an assisted-living facility--Colorado, 2012.

On May 28, 2012, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) was notified of six cases of severe respiratory illness among 12 residents of an assisted-living facility (ALF) specializing in the care of elderly persons with dementia or memory loss. During May 22-27, 2012, five residents were hospitalized, and two developed invasive disease with Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcal) bacteremia. S. pneumoniae is spread by airborne droplets and causes an estimated 175,000 hospitalizations and 50,000 cases of pneumococcal bacteremia each year. The case-fatality rate of pneumoc

Provision of postpartum care to women giving birth in health facilities in sub-Saharan Africa: A cross-sectional study using Demographic and Health Survey data from 33 countries.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum care has the potential to avert a substantial proportion of maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity. There is a crucial gap in understanding the quality of postpartum care for women giving birth in health facilities in low- and middle-income settings. This is particularly the case in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where the levels of maternal and neonatal mortality are highest globally despite rapid increases in facility-based childbirth. This study estimated the percentage of women receiving a postpartum health check following childbirth in a health facility in SSA an

Candida auris in US Correctional Facilities.

Candida auris is an emerging fungal pathogen that typically affects patients in healthcare settings. Data on C. auris cases in correctional facilities are limited but are needed to guide public health recommendations. We describe cases and challenges of providing care for 13 patients who were transferred to correctional facilities during January 2020-December 2022 after having a positive C. auris specimen. All patients had positive specimens identified while receiving inpatient care at healthcare facilities in geographic areas with high C. auris prevalence. Correctional facilities reported cha

Indoor environmental conditions correlate with the microbial landscape of food production facilities across space and time.

The microbial communities inhabiting food production environments are distinguished from those of other built environments in their capacity to influence food quality and safety, impacting consumer health. However, the degree to which indoor environmental conditions influence the composition of the bacterial and fungal communities throughout food production facilities remains insufficiently explored. In this study of five commercial food production facilities, we employed remote wireless sensors paired with marker-gene amplicon sequencing (bacterial 16S rRNA genes and fungal internal transcrib

Graphene oxide as a tool for antibiotic-resistant gene removal: a review.

Environmental pollutants, including antibiotics (ATBs), have become an increasingly common health hazard in the last several decades. Overdose and abuse of ATBs led to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs), which represent a serious health threat. Moreover, water bodies and reservoirs are places where a wide range of bacterial species with ARGs originate, owing to the strong selective pressure from presence of ATB residues. In this regard, graphene oxide (GO) has been utilised in several fields including remediation of the environment. In this review, we present a brief overview o
