Establishing a Consumer Panel to Inform Health Technology Assessment Processes and Policy: impact and insights from Singapore's experience.

Patient involvement in health technology assessment (HTA) at the organizational level remains relatively underreported in Asia. In 2022, Singapore's Agency for Care Effectiveness (ACE) established a Consumer Panel to provide strategic advice on strengthening patient participation in HTA processes and policy development. The Panel comprises representatives from local patient organizations, collectively covering a range of health conditions and bringing extensive lived experience within Singapore's healthcare system. This Perspective outlines ACE's approach to forming the Panel and highlights it

Environmental impact assessment of waste plastic modified asphalt mixtures: VOCs emission characteristics, environmental-health risks, and underlying mechanism.

Incorporating waste plastics into asphalt mixtures offers dual benefits of enhancing performance and reducing white pollution, while also necessitating consideration of their environmental impact. This work quantitatively investigated the effects of waste high-density polyethylene (wHDPE), polyvinyl chloride (wPVC), and polypropylene (wPP) plastics on volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions and associated environmental-health risks of asphalt mixtures prepared via the dry method under simulated paving conditions, with mechanistic insights into the impacts. Results revealed that waste plast

Health impact assessment of transport policies in Rotterdam: Decrease of total traffic and increase of electric car use.

BACKGROUND: Green house gas (GHG) mitigation policies can be evaluated by showing their co-benefits to health. METHOD: Health Impact Assessment (HIA) was used to quantify co-benefits of GHG mitigation policies in Rotterdam. The effects of two separate interventions (10% reduction of private vehicle kilometers and a share of 50% electric-powered private vehicle kilometers) on particulate matter (PM2.5), elemental carbon (EC) and noise (engine noise and tyre noise) were assessed using Years of Life Lost (YLL) and Years Lived with Disability (YLD). The baseline was 2010 and the end of the assess

Assessment of the impact of the London Olympics 2012 on selected non-genitourinary medicine clinic sexual health services.

With minimal information on sexual health provision during mass-gathering events, our aim was to describe the use of sexual health, contraceptive, sex worker and sexual assault services during the London 2012 Olympics. We analysed data from five sources. One contraceptive service provider reported a 10% increase in attendance during the main Games, while emergency contraception prescriptions rose during the main Olympics, compared to the week before, but were similar or lower than at the beginning and end of the summer period. A health telephone advice line reported a 16% fall in sexual health

Impact assessment of a community-based animal health project in Dollo Ado and Dollo Bay districts, southern Ethiopia.

Participatory methods were used to assess the impact of a community-based animal health worker (CAHW) project in two remote pastoralist districts of Ethiopia. The CAHW project had been operating for 3 years at the time of the assessment. Participatory methods were standardized and repeated with 10 groups of informants in the project area. The assessment showed significant reductions in disease impact for diseases handled by CAHWs compared with diseases not handled by CAHWs. In camels, there was significant reduction (p < 0.001) in the impact of mange, trypanosomosis, helminthosis, anthrax and

Advancing the measurement of caregiver impact: Data collection priorities aligned with caregiver, health technology assessment, and policy stakeholders.

BACKGROUND: Family caregiving plays a central role in the US health care system, with substantial economic, health, and policy implications. In 2024, the estimated economic value of unpaid caregiving exceeded $1 trillion, with tens of millions of individuals providing care nationwide. However, caregiver impacts are inconsistently measured and rarely incorporated into clinical evidence, economic evaluations, and health technology assessments, limiting their use in coverage, formulary, and policy contexts. As a result, health care decision-making may not fully capture the broader benefits, costs

Improved O3 attribution and health impact assessment using RSM-based inverse emission inventories in the greater bay area.

Ground-level ozone (O3) remains a persistent air-quality challenge in large urbanized regions, driven by nonlinear photochemical interactions between nitrogen oxides (NOX) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), as well as regional transport across administrative boundaries. In the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), differences in emission structures and inventory methodologies among jurisdictions, together with COVID-19-related activity disruptions in 2020, introduce substantial uncertainties into bottom-up precursor estimates and limit the reliability of O3 attribution and expo

Atmospheric and health impact of fine particulate-bound organic pollutant: a probabilistic carcinogenic risk assessment with sensitivity analysis.

In recent years, India has witnessed an alarming rise in air pollution levels, raising growing concerns among health and environmental experts. This study evaluates the inhalation cancer risk associated with fine particulate matter (PM2.5) bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in two rapidly developing yet under-monitored regions of India. Ambient air samples were analyzed for 16 priority PAHs, and the carcinogenic risk was assessed using Incremental Lifetime Cancer Risk (ILCR) estimates through Monte Carlo simulations for both adults and children. The results indicated season and site

Health assessment of non-native red-eared sliders (Trachemys scripta elegans) and their impact potential on native species.

Red-eared sliders (RES; Trachemys scripta elegans) are a globally invasive species that can impact native chelonian populations through resource competition and disease introduction. In Cook County, Illinois, invasive RES co-occur with, and greatly outnumber, a species of conservation priority in the Great Lakes region: the Blanding's turtle (Emydoidea blandingii). This study sampled free-ranging RES in Cook County during spring, summer, and fall in four unique locations to characterize the possible effect of this non-native species on the health of regional, sympatric, aquatic chelonians. Global, regional, and national mortality burden attributable to air pollution from landscape fires: a health impact assessment study.

BACKGROUND: Landscape fire-sourced (LFS) air pollution is an increasing public health concern in the context of climate change. However, little is known about the attributable global, regional, and national mortality burden related to LFS air pollution. METHODS: We calculated country-specific population-weighted average daily and annual LFS fine particulate matter (PM2·5) and surface ozone (O3) during 2000-19 from a validated dataset. We obtained the relative risks (RRs) for both short-term and long-term impact of LFS PM2·5 and O3 on all-cause, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality. The s

Public health impact of daily life triggers of sudden cardiac death: A systematic review and comparative risk assessment.

BACKGROUND: Sudden cardiac death (SCD) may be triggered by daily circumstances and activities such as stressful psycho-emotional events, physical exertion or substance misuse. We calculated population attributable fractions (PAFs) to estimate the public health relevance of daily life triggers of SCD and to compare their population impacts. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Scopus and the Web of Science citation databases to retrieve studies of triggers of SCD and cardiac arrest that would enable a computation of PAFs. When more studies investigated the same trigger, a meta-analytical pooled risk r

The contribution of motor vehicle emissions to ambient fine particulate matter public health impacts in New York City: a health burden assessment.

BACKGROUND: On-road vehicles are an important source of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in cities, but spatially varying traffic emissions and vulnerable populations make it difficult to assess impacts to inform policy and the public. METHODS: We estimated PM2.5-attributable mortality and morbidity from on-road vehicle generated air pollution in the New York City (NYC) region using high-spatial-resolution emissions estimates, air quality modeling, and local health incidence data to evaluate variations in impacts by vehicle class, neighborhood, and area socioeconomic status. We developed multi

The impact of mental health on outcome after anterior cervical discectomy: cohort study assessing the influence of mental health using predictive modelling.

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety are common mental disorders among patients with chronic pain. It is hypothesised that patients suffering from these disorders benefit less from cervical spine surgery than mentally healthy patients. Therefore, this study aimed to quantify the effect of mental health status on functional outcome after anterior cervical discectomy in a post hoc analysis on RCT data. METHODS: One hundred eight patients from the NECK trial, with radiculopathy due to a one-level herniated disc, underwent anterior cervical discectomy and were included into this analysis. Functiona
