Mental Health, Social Influences, and HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Utilization Among Men and Transgender Individuals Screening for HIV Prevention Trials.

The effects of mental health comorbidities and social support on the HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) care continuum are unknown. We conducted a cross-sectional study of men and transgender individuals, ≥ 18 years-old, with ≥ 2 male or transgender partners, or recent condomless anal intercourse. Surveys assessed demographics, mental health treatment, depressive symptomatology, social support, and PrEP-related social contacts. Logistic regression assessed associations between these factors and PrEP uptake and persistence. Participants (n = 247) were 89% cis-male and 46% African-American. Med

Housing Intervention For Medically Complex Families Associated With Improved Family Health: Pilot Randomized Trial.

The effects of housing instability and homelessness on child and adult health are well documented. However, few studies have explored health and housing interventions for families with children with the objective of health improvement. Housing Prescriptions as Health Care is a randomized controlled trial that is investigating the impact on physical and mental health of integrating priority placement in affordable housing and the provision of services (case management, financial, and legal), compared to the standard of care (providing resource guides and hospital-based social work or care navig

Caregiving responsibilities, living alone, and mental health among older women during a time of collective stress.

OBJECTIVES: The prevailing belief is that during times of heightened collective stress, the adverse effects of experiences such as caregiving and living alone on mental health are exacerbated. Whether this is true and the extent to which modifiable contextual factors still buffer their negative effects remain underexplored. Women are often disproportionately affected by the burdens of caregiving, and older adults face added challenges due to age-related social and health vulnerabilities. We examined prospective associations of caregiving responsibilities and living alone with mental health in

A framework for population health observatory from a global perspective: proposed preliminary maturity model and key performance indicators.

BACKGROUND: Population health observatories (PHOs) have emerged as fundamental pillars of modern public health governance, enabling the transformation of fragmented, multidimensional health data from multiple centres into evidence-informed policymaking and development, strategic planning and actionable intelligence for surveillance and precision public health. This study aimed to develop a globally comparative framework for assessing the maturity level of PHOs by using standardised artificial intelligence (AI) and a series of multidimensional key performance indicators (KPIs), with particular

Interprofessional collaboration on oral health for frail home-dwelling older people: a focus group study on needs and barriers experienced by general practitioners and community pharmacists.

BACKGROUND: Despite the increased risk of deteriorating oral health among older individuals, dental attendance often declines over time in frail home-dwelling older people (FHOP), resulting in a significant burden of untreated oral disease. Literature highlights the importance of interprofessional collaboration to address oral health problems in ageing societies, emphasising the potential roles of general practitioners (GPs) and pharmacists. However, there is currently limited evidence regarding (a) their engagement in oral health and (b) the perceived needs and barriers in contributing collec

Kwashiorkor not associated with poverty.

Four infants are described with kwashiorkor that was unassociated with poverty or infection as predisposing factors of their disease. The condition followed various dietary regimens deficient in protein of five weeks to seven months in duration. Features of this "sugar-bady" form of kwashiorkor included a low level of physician awareness of malnutrition as a diagnostic consideration, growth retardation, edema, muscle wasting, mental changes, and mild lymphocytosis. Initially, recovery was associated with rapid loss of weight and anemia and subsequently with weight gain and return to good healt

Exploring the multi-level correlates of sports participation among Chinese adults based on ecological models and hierarchical regression: evidence from national survey dataset.

BACKGROUND: The numerous benefits of adult participation in sports are widely acknowledged. However, the sports participation (SP) rate among Chinese adults remains low. Moreover, the correlates of SP across countries may differ significantly compared to the existing literature. In addition, as a form of health behavior, SP is shaped by multiple factors at both individual and environmental levels, as outlined by the ecological model. This study systematically incorporates variables across these levels to explore the multidimensional correlates of SP among Chinese adults. METHODS: This study u

Assessment of health state utilities associated with adult and pediatric acid sphingomyelinase deficiency (ASMD).

INTRODUCTION: Acid sphingomyelinase deficiency (ASMD) type B is a rare genetic disorder leading to enlargement of the spleen and liver, pulmonary dysfunction, and other symptoms. Cost-utility analyses are often conducted to quantify the value of new treatments, and these analyses require health state utilities. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to estimate utilities associated with varying levels of severity of adult and pediatric ASMD type B. METHODS: Seven adult and seven child health state vignettes describing ASMD were developed based on published literature, clinical trial results

Detection of novel organophosphorus flame retardants and plasticizers in children urines: Associations with oxidative stress damage and thyroid nodule risk.

Organophosphorus flame retardants and plasticizers (OPFRs) are prevalent and raise health concerns due to their endocrine-disrupting properties. Clinically detectable thyroid nodules are less common in children than in adults but pose a higher malignancy risk. The effects of OPFRs on children's thyroid nodules and their relation to oxidative stress remain unknown. This cross-sectional study analyzed concentrations of seven OPFRs and three oxidative stress biomarkers (OSBs), namely 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), malondialdehyde, and o, o'-dityrosine (diY) in 521 urine samples fro

The Swedish model of health dialogues, a combined individual- and community-based primary preventive program for cardiovascular disease, is associated with reduced mortality: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Behavioural risk factors are key determinants of premature death. The Swedish model of health dialogues, which has been developed since 1985, aims to promote healthy behaviours, for prevention of cardiovascular disease, by inviting everyone in specific age groups to primary care for health dialogues combined with community-oriented activities. The health dialogue was performed by trained nurses, based on individual results from questionnaires on health behaviors and results of physiological measures, using visual pedagogic tools and motivational interviewing techniques. Can depressed cancer patients with a borderline thiamine concentration develop deficiency within a short time period?

BACKGROUND: Despite increasing reports of thiamine deficiency (TD) among cancer patients, there remain some patients with borderline thiamine concentrations (BTC). However, it is unclear whether such patients subsequently develop TD. METHODS: Here, we report cases of cancer patients progressing to TD within a short time period after presentation with BTC (24-28 ng/ml). CASE 1: A 49-year-old female with lung cancer. During treatment for depression, the patient showed a decreased appetite, and a blood sample revealed BTC (25 ng/ml). Fourteen days later, she reported a continued loss of appetit
