Psychological distress among emergency medical services personnel: implications for public health preparedness and system resilience.

INTRODUCTION: Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel are integral to disaster and emergency response systems. Recurrent exposure to high-acuity incidents, irregular shifts, and operational pressures may increase vulnerability to psychological distress, with potential implications for workforce sustainability and system resilience. This study assessed the severity distribution and predictors of stress, anxiety, and depression among EMS personnel in the Makkah region of Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted between January and April 2024 among certified EMS profession

Effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccination to prevent health care personnel absences: A single site experience.

Absenteeism from infections has a significant impact on the health care workforce. We found that COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment reduced absenteeism in health care personnel until February 2022 when absences became higher in vaccinated than unvaccinated health care personnel. Maintaining a COVID-19 vaccine mandate is challenging given changing epidemiology.

Direct and indirect barriers to hypothetical access to care among Canadian forces health services personnel.

BACKGROUND: Though research among Canadian Forces Health Services (CFHS) personnel is limited, the literature suggests formal healthcare is underused. Though much research has been conducted on particular barriers (e.g., stigma), examining a breadth of barriers could better inform behavioral interventions. Furthermore, work has yet to examine the indirect effects of barriers through their impact on intentions to access care. METHODS: CFHS participants were randomly assigned to complete either a mental health (N = 503) or physical health (N = 530) version of the survey. The survey included que

Mindfulness and Psychological Health Outcomes: A Latent Profile Analysis among Military Personnel and College Students.

Previous research on trait mindfulness facets using person-centered analyses (e.g., latent profile analysis [LPA]) has identified four distinct mindfulness profiles among college students: a high mindfulness group (high on all facets of the Five-Factor Mindfulness Questionnaire [FFMQ]), a judgmentally observing group (highest on observing, but low on non-judging of inner experience and acting with awareness), a non-judgmentally aware group (high on non-judging of inner experience and acting with awareness, but very low on observing), and a low mindfulness group (low on all facets of the FFMQ).

Risk Factors for Incident Postdeployment Mental Health Conditions Among U.S. Air Force Medical Service Personnel.

The prevalence of postdeployment mental health (PDMH) conditions in military health care personnel appears to be on par with that of other military personnel. However, there is no comprehensive analysis of incident PDMH conditions within the overall population of U.S. Air Force Medical Service personnel. This study explored the epidemiology of incident PDMH conditions among Air Force Medical Service personnel returning from deployment. A cohort survival analysis was conducted of 24,409 subjects without preexisting mental health conditions and at least one deployment during 2003-2013. Electroni

Beyond the Badge: A Scoping Review Among Police Personnel in South India Exploring the Impact of Yoga and Health Education on Cardiovascular Health.

Communicable diseases have been the primary cause of morbidity and mortality, affecting populations for decades. However, in recent times, noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) have emerged as the primary cause of illness and premature death due to factors such as urbanization, longer life expectancy, and unhealthy lifestyles. In recent years, noncommunicable illnesses have emerged as the primary cause of morbidity and premature mortality, replacing infectious diseases as the leading cause of illness and death. Among the top five causes of NCD, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the most important fact

Opinions of Health Care Personnel Regarding Disincentives and Incentives for Living Kidney Donation at a Single Center.

BACKGROUND: Transplant societies continue to actively concentrate on increasing rates of living kidney donation (LKD) to bridge the gap between individuals awaiting transplantation and the number of kidneys available. A widely discussed strategy to increase living donation rates is the provision of incentives and removal of disincentives. Though opinions of the public regarding this strategy have been studied, the opinions of health care providers, including younger professionals, are less clear. We studied the opinions of medical students and other health care providers on strategies to incre

Ethical Dilemmas Faced by Military Health Personnel During High-Intensity Conflict: The Crucial Issue of Triage.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has triggered the biggest conflict in Europe since the Second World War. It has forced countries to prepare for engagement on a massive scale, namely, a high-intensity war between nation states. A potential massive influx of wounded personnel risks saturating logistical supply chains and requires changes to not only medical care but also a paradigm shift. In this context, the principle of distributive justice is key. The aim is to save as many lives as possible through triage, which consists in "doing the greatest good for the greatest number." This idea is fundame
