Exposure to physical violence during childhood, aging, and health.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to estimate the relationship between exposure to physical violence administered by one's parents and adult health. In the process, the authors also examine factors that mediate and moderate this association. METHODS: Hypothesized relationships were tested using ordinary least squares regression analyses with data collected from a nationwide sample of adults aged 25 to 74 in 1995. RESULTS: The data suggest that exposure to childhood physical violence is associated with diminished mental and physical health in adulthood. These associations do not vary b

A meta-analytic review of research on hostility and physical health.

A new meta-analysis of research on hostility and physical health was conducted that includes 15 studies used in previous meta-analytic reviews and 30 new independent studies. Overall, the results suggest that hostility is an independent risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD). For structured interview indicators of potential for hostility, the weighted mean r was .18. After controlling for other risk factors for CHD, the widely used Cook-Medley Hostility Scale and other cognitive-experiential measures were most predictive of all-cause mortality (weighted mean r = .16) and, to a lesser ext

Is having an alcoholic father hazardous for children's physical health?

Five hundred and ninety-nine French-Canadian pre-adolescent children for whom the alcoholic status of the parents was known were subdivided into eight groups, according to family structure (intact, non-intact), alcoholic status of the father (alcoholic, non-alcoholic) and gender of the target child (girl, boy). ANCOVAs were conducted (controlling for income, a factor which contributes to illness) for health-related variables in order to test the hypothesis that children of alcoholic fathers have more physical health problems compared to children without alcoholic fathers. Data pertaining to us

Mental and physical health and ageing in mental handicap: a review.

With some exceptions, the mental and physical health problems of elderly mentally handicapped people are similar to those of the elderly population as a whole. Psychiatric disorder is more common due to a higher frequency of behaviour disorders. Increased longevity has been accompanied by a progressive increase in deaths from age-related conditions and in individuals with Down's syndrome exposed a predisposition to premature senility and dementia. Service issues include general health care, preventive measures, provision for those with psychiatric and age-related problems, and staff training.

Potential impact of physical distancing on physical and mental health: a rapid narrative umbrella review of meta-analyses on the link between social connection and health.

BACKGROUND: The imperative for physical distancing (mostly referred to as social distancing) during COVID-19 pandemic may deteriorate physical and mental health. We aimed at summarising the strength of evidence in the published literature on the association of physical and mental health with social connection via social isolation, living alone and loneliness. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search in April 2020 to identify meta-analyses using the Medline, PsycINFO and Web of Science databases. The search strategy included terms of social isolation, loneliness, living alone and meta-analysi

Profile and interplay of mental health as well as physical health symptoms in post-COVID patients.

Currently, no clinically relevant physiological markers of post COVID-19 condition exist, which stymies treatment development and rehabilitation efforts. Therefore, a monocentric cross-sectional study was conducted to characterize the long-term mental and physical health consequences of infection with SARS-COV-2. 156 participants were recruited as part of the voluntary post COVID-19 condition consultation hours at the BG Hospital Hamburg, Germany, after the insured persons were invited by the relevant statutory accident insurance providers. Overall, 34% of participants were unable to work. Bas

The relationship between physical ill-health and mental ill-health in adults with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: People with intellectual disabilities face a much greater burden and earlier onset of physical and mental ill-health than the general adult population. Physical-mental comorbidity has been shown to result in poorer outcomes in the general population, but little is known about this relationship in adults with intellectual disabilities. AIMS: To identify whether physical ill-health is associated with mental ill-health in adults with intellectual disabilities and whether the extent of physical multi-morbidity can predict the likelihood of mental ill-health. To identify any associatio

Impact of a Mental Health Based Primary Care Program on Quality of Physical Health Care.

We examine the impact of mental health based primary care on physical health treatment among community mental health center patients in New York State using propensity score adjusted difference in difference models. Outcomes are quality indicators related to outpatient medical visits, diabetes HbA1c monitoring, and metabolic monitoring of antipsychotic treatment. Results suggest the program improved metabolic monitoring for patients on antipsychotics in one of two waves, but did not impact other quality indicators. Ceiling effects may have limited program impacts. More structured clinical prog

State mental health policy: Physical health screening in state mental health clinics: the New York health indicators initiative.

The New York State Office of Mental Health recently mandated that all adult outpatient clinics regularly monitor three health indicators--body mass index, blood pressure, and smoking status. After the population was defined, medical equipment was distributed. Regular training and quality improvement meetings were held to improve the electronic database for indicator data. Clinical directors were provided regular feedback on performance monitoring. Learning collaboratives allowed sharing of implementation strategies. After only four months of this coordinated effort, approximately 7,500 people

Predicting health care utilization in the very old. The role of physical health, mental health, attitudinal and social factors.

The purpose of this paper is to predict health care utilization in the very old from a combination of individual-based factors such as physical and mental health, health attitudes and beliefs, sociodemographic characteristics, and life circumstances. This study was conducted within the context of the Berlin Aging Study (BASE). Higher use of medications was most strongly predicted by more medical diagnoses, better cognitive status, and health attitudes. Physician contact was only weakly predicted by physical health variables, hypochondriasis, and living alone. In contrast, living alone was the

The effects of sitting Tai Chi on physical and psychosocial health outcomes among individuals with impaired physical mobility.

BACKGROUND: Impaired physical mobility, most often seen in people with neurological disorders (i.e., stroke and spinal cord injury survivors), musculoskeletal diseases or frailty, is a limitation in independent and purposeful physical movement of the body or one or more extremities. The physical restrictions result in negative consequences on an individual's physical and psychosocial functions. This proposal describes a systematic review protocol to determine the effectiveness and approaches of sitting Tai Chi intervention for individuals with impaired physical mobility. Our review would infor
