Successful Implementation of a Program for Increasing Donor Eyes for Research: The Duke-Miracles In Sight Program.

PURPOSE: Although essential for development of ocular therapeutics, the quality and quantity of human donor eyes for research have been on the decline. To streamline procurement protocols, provide better medical documentation of tissue, and improve freshness and number of eyes, a pilot cooperative program was undertaken between the Duke University Eye Center and Miracles In Sight Eye Bank. METHODS: For research eye donors who expire at Duke University Hospital, age restrictions to procurement were lifted, access to donors' electronic medical records was granted to researchers, and eye tissue

Preventive health services: Immunization.

The seven major childhood infectious diseases-measles, mumps, rubella, polio, diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus-can cause permanent disability and, in some cases, death. They all can be prevented by immunization, but prior to the National Childhood Immunization Initiative of 1977 more than a third of all children under age 15 were not properly protected. And even though vaccines are now available to reduce the risk of influenza, hepatitis B, and pneumococcal pneumonia, many high risk patients are not protected. Outbreaks of measles and pertussis, and occasionally of diphtheria and polio, duri

Implementation of a regional quality improvement collaborative to improve care of people living with opioid use disorder in a Canadian setting.

BACKGROUND: Although opioid agonist therapy is effective in treating opioid use disorders (OUD), retention in opioid agonist therapy is suboptimal, in part, due to quality of care issues. Therefore, we sought to describe the planning and implementation of a quality improvement initiative aimed at closing gaps in care for people living with OUD through changes to workflow and care processes in Vancouver, Canada. METHODS: The Best-practice in Oral Opioid agoniSt Therapy (BOOST) Collaborative followed the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's Breakthrough Series Collaborative methodology over 1

The case for implementing the levels of prevention model: Opiate abuse on American college campuses.

Opiate abuse in the United States is on the rise among the college student population. This public health crisis requires immediate action from professionals and stakeholders who are committed to addressing the needs of prospective, current, and recovering opiate users using comprehensive prevention methods. Such approaches have been used to deliver primary, secondary, and tertiary intervention to alcohol and other drug users but are underutilized in the case of opiate abuse among college students in the United States. There is a definite need for involving college campus faculty, staff, stude

States' implementation of the Section 510 abstinence education program, FY 1999.

CONTEXT: As part of its reworking of the nation's welfare system in 1996, Congress enacted a major new abstinence education initiative (Section 510 of Title V of the Social Security Act), projected to spend $87.5 million in federal, state and local funds per year for five years. The new program is designed to emphasize abstinence from sexual activity outside of marriage, at any age, rather than premarital abstinence for adolescents, which was typical of earlier efforts. The actual message and impact of the program, however, will depend on how it is implemented. METHODS: Program coordinators i

The EU Safe Hearts Plan and Greece: implementation considerations and opportunities.

On 16 December 2025, the European Commission introduced the Safe Hearts Plan, the first dedicated European-level strategy to address cardiovascular disease, structured around 10 Flagship Initiatives covering prevention, nutrition, tobacco control, vaccination, individualized treatment, digital technology, equity, and research. The Plan recommends that all 27 EU member states develop national cardiovascular health (CVH) plans by 2027. For Greece, the Safe Hearts Plan's 2027 deadline for national CVH plans represents a logical progression, building on substantial existing prevention initiatives.

Quality of obstetric care in public-sector facilities and constraints to implementing emergency obstetric care services: evidence from high- and low-performing districts of Bangladesh.

This study explored the quality of obstetric care in public-sector facilities and the constraints to programming comprehensive essential obstetric care (EOC) services in rural areas of Khulna and Sylhet divisions, relatively high- and low-performing areas of Bangladesh respectively. Quality was explored by physically inspecting all public-sector EOC facilities and the constraints through in-depth interviews with public-sector programme managers and service providers. Distribution of the functional EOC facilities satisfied the United Nation's minimum criteria of at least one comprehensive EOC a

Towards the trachoma elimination target in the Southern region of Ethiopia: How well is the SAFE strategy being implemented?

INTRODUCTION: Trachoma is one of the 20 neglected tropical diseases and a serious public health problem in Ethiopia. To reach the WHO elimination target by 2020, SAFE (Surgery, Antibiotics, Facial cleanliness, Environmental improvement) strategy has been implemented in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region (SNNPRs), Ethiopia. Scarce evidence exists regarding recent progress in achieving elimination of active trachoma (< 5%) and how well the SAFE strategy implemented. METHODOLOGY: A retrospective analysis of programmatic data in the period 2013-2018 was used. All trachoma en

Reducing Blindness from Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) in Argentina Through Collaboration, Advocacy and Policy Implementation.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a largely avoidable cause of blindness in children worldwide, requiring high-quality neonatal care, early detection and treatment. In middle-income countries throughout Latin America, Eastern Europe and South Asia, there has been a rise in ROP blindness due to a combination of increased survival of preterm infants, resource-scarce medical environments and lack of policies, training and human resources. However, Argentina is an example of country where rates of ROP blindness have declined and ROP programmes have been successfully and effectively embedded with

Supporting teams to optimize function and independence in Veterans: a multi-study program and mixed methods protocol.

BACKGROUND: Successful implementation of new clinical programs depends on effectively establishing, reorganizing, or enhancing team structures and processes to coordinate the work of individuals who are interdependent in their tasks, manage relationships, and share responsibility for outcomes. However, a one-size-fits-all approach is rarely effective. In partnership with VA national clinical leaders and local clinical champions, the Optimizing Function and Independence VA Quality Enhancement Research Initiative program (Function QUERI) will evaluate efforts to implement team-based clinical pro

Implementation science for ambulatory care safety: a novel method to develop context-sensitive interventions to reduce quality gaps in monitoring high-risk patients.

BACKGROUND: Missed evidence-based monitoring in high-risk conditions (e.g., cancer) leads to delayed diagnosis. Current technological solutions fail to close this safety gap. In response, we aim to demonstrate a novel method to identify common vulnerabilities across clinics and generate attributes for context-flexible population-level monitoring solutions for widespread implementation to improve quality. METHODS: Based on interviews with staff in otolaryngology, pulmonary, urology, breast, and gastroenterology clinics at a large urban publicly funded health system, we applied journey mapping

The economics, financing and implementation of HIV treatment as prevention: what will it take to get there?

The 2013 Lancet Commission Report, Global Health 2035, rightly pointed out that we are at a unique place in history where a "grand convergence" of health initiatives to reduce both infectious diseases, and child and maternal mortality--diseases that still plague low income countries--would yield good returns in terms of development and health outcomes. This would also be a good economic investment. Such investments would support achieving health goals of reducing under-five (U5) mortality to 16 per 1000 live births, reducing deaths due to HIV/AIDS to 8 per 100,000 population, and reducing annu

Could implementation of Australia's national gay men's syphilis action plan have an indirect effect on the HIV epidemic?

OBJECTIVES: The number of incident infections of syphilis and HIV have increased over the past decade across Australia, particularly among gay men. In other industrialised settings, syphilis epidemics have also resurged coincidentally with increases in HIV diagnoses. Sexually transmissible infections (STI) are a biologically plausible cofactor for increasing HIV transmission. We pose the question: could strategies purely targeting syphilis also have an indirect impact on HIV incidence? METHODS: We developed an agent-based computer model that simulates the transmission and disease progression

Preventive health services: Sexually transmitted disease control.

Over 10 million cases of sexually transmitted diseases (STD) occur annually, 86 percent of them in 15- to 29-year-olds. The most common STDs are trichomoniasis, gonorrhea, non-gonococcal urethritis, genital herpes, and syphilis. In 1950 the reported syphilis rate was 146 per 100,000. The rate decreased to 30 per 100,000 by 1978, resulting in approximately 80,000 new cases of syphilis a year. During the same time span the gonorrhea rate increased from 192 cases per 100,000 to 468 cases per 100,000. In each year between 1967 and 1976, reported cases of gonorrhea increased between 10 and 15 perce

Study protocol for a prospective, cluster randomised control, hybrid type 1 effectiveness-implementation trial to evaluate the Reduction Of Seizures through Education and Support: the ROSES study.

INTRODUCTION: Epilepsy affects 1% of the US population, imposing a significant burden through seizures, distress and medication side effects. Many adverse outcomes can be reduced with patient education and an acute seizure action plan. Electronic health record clinical templates can support this care but are often seen as burdensome. This study will develop a clinical template embedding an acute seizure action plan into routine neurology visits and examine its effect on care quality and healthcare use, as well as barriers and facilitators to adoption. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This study is a sin

Identifying and de-implementing low-value care in primary care: the GP's perspective-a cross-sectional survey.

OBJECTIVE: General practitioners have an important role in reducing low-value care as gatekeepers of the health system. The aim of this study was to assess the experiences of Dutch general practitioners regarding low-value care and to identify their needs to decrease low-value primary care. DESIGN: We performed a cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS: We sent a survey to 500 general practitioners. SETTING: Primary care in the Netherlands. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOMES: The survey contained questions about the provision of low-value care and on clinical cases about lumbosacral spine X-rays i

Breast cancer early detection: A phased approach to implementation.

When breast cancer is detected and treated early, the chances of survival are very high. However, women in many settings face complex barriers to early detection, including social, economic, geographic, and other interrelated factors, which can limit their access to timely, affordable, and effective breast health care services. Previously, the Breast Health Global Initiative (BHGI) developed resource-stratified guidelines for the early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer. In this consensus article from the sixth BHGI Global Summit held in October 2018, the authors describe phases of early
