Cannabis and Oral Health Implications for 3 Priority Populations: A Special Communication.

As the legal status and social perceptions of cannabis shift globally, the potential impact of cannabis use on health and well-being merits heightened attention among practitioners and researchers, including possible effects on oral health. Evidence suggests that cannabis use may be associated with adverse oral health outcomes, including periodontal disease and xerostomia, with less conclusive links to dental caries and oral cancer. It is also becoming increasingly clear that certain population segments are at greater risk of cannabis use and may consequently face a greater burden of oral dise

Mental health as an advocacy priority in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities.

This column reviews the evolution of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) mental health advocacy in relation to modern mental health advocacy efforts. In addition to developments in organized psychiatry (e.g., American Psychiatric Association's LGBT caucus), grassroots LGBT community initiatives are playing an important role (e.g., Trevor Project providing crisis intervention/suicide prevention services to LGBT youth, face-to-face mental health services in LGBT community centers). Studies have found that LGBT individuals are at increased risk for mental health problems (e.g., depress

The health and life priorities of individuals with spinal cord injury: a systematic review.

Determining the priorities of individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) can assist in choosing research priorities that will ultimately improve their quality of life. This systematic review examined studies that directly surveyed people with SCI to ascertain their health priorities and life domains of importance. Twenty-four studies (a combined sample of 5262 subjects) that met the inclusion criteria were identified using electronic databases (Medline, EMBASE, CINAHL, and PsycINFO). The questionnaire methods and domains of importance were reviewed and described. While the questionnaires varied

Determining public health priorities for an ageing population: the value of a disability survey.

In order to determine which diseases and health problems were most strongly associated with long-term disability among the Thai elderly and to determine their public health priority, a national cross-sectional multistage random sampling survey was conducted in 1997. Four thousand and forty-eight Thai older persons aged 60 years and over were recruited and interviewed by trained interviewers. Overall, 769 (19%) people reported having a long-term disability. Participants with long-term disability (LD) reported having between one and 21 long-term diseases or health problems. Eighteen of these pro

The role of priority programmes in the provision of health services in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico.

An assessment of the performance of five priority health programmes (basic sanitation, tuberculosis, vaccination, acute respiratory infections and acute diarrheal diseases) was carried out using ethnographic techniques in the region of La Cañada in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. The region presents a large percentage of Indian and peasant population living in extreme poverty and health care is mainly provided by the Ministry of Health. Both characteristics of the population and the health services are used to analyze the performance of the programmes. With access to abundant resources, vaccinati

Setting priorities for non-regulatory animal health in Ireland: results from an expert Policy Delphi study and a farmer priority identification survey.

Agriculture is a very important contributor to the Irish economy. In Ireland, national animal health services have been a government, rather than an industry, responsibility. In 2009, Animal Health Ireland (AHI) was established to provide a partnership approach to national leadership of non-regulatory animal health issues (those not subject to national and/or EU regulation). The objectives of this study were to elicit opinion from experts and farmers about non-regulatory animal health issues facing Irish livestock industries, including prioritisation of animal health issues and identification

A methodological framework for establishing regional disease-specific health research priorities (the RDHRP Framework).

BACKGROUND: Setting regional disease-specific health research priorities is essential for guiding the development of the local health system and even the society through research. However, existing priority-setting approaches either rely heavily on opinions and lack transparent and reproducible procedures or demand intensive technical resources and are time-consuming. This study aimed to develop a structured, disease-specific, regionally adaptable methodological framework to address these gaps. METHODS: A multidisciplinary working group with expertise in public health and clinical research me

Shifting priorities: U.S. health policy and the fragile future of global HIV/AIDS efforts.

ObjectiveThis narrative review examines the impact of the United States on the war against HIV/AIDS and thus the impact of political ideologies on the financing of the medical sector.DiscussionInitially marked by stigma, particularly in the early years of the epidemic, the US response was transformed with the launch of the Presidential Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in 2003. PEPFAR has partnered with entities such as the Global Fund and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), retranslating global health governance. Despite this success, the global response remains dep

Interest-holder priorities for health surveillance of people incarcerated in Canada: A qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: As a core function of public health, health surveillance for people who are incarcerated could address gaps in knowledge regarding their health status. The views of people who could use these data and who are included in health surveillance data should inform health surveillance. In this study, we aimed to identify the priorities of interest-holders for health surveillance of people incarcerated in Canadian correctional facilities. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted an overall qualitative descriptive study with an embedded reflexive thematic analysis and a qualitative content analysis. M

Priorities in school eye health in low and middle-income countries a scoping review.

School eye health (SEH) has been on the global agenda for many years, and there is mounting evidence available to support that school-based visual screenings are one of the most effective and cost-efficient interventions to reach children over five years old. A scoping review was conducted in MEDLINE, Web of Science, PubMed, and CINHAL between February and June 2023 to identify current priorities in recent literature on school eye health in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Selection of relevant publications was performed with Covidence, and the main findings were classified according

Perinatal mental health around the world: priorities for research and service development in Africa.

Africa is a diverse and changing continent with a rapidly growing population, and the mental health of mothers is a key health priority. Recent studies have shown that: perinatal common mental disorders (depression and anxiety) are at least as prevalent in Africa as in high-income and other low- and middle-income regions; key risk factors include intimate partner violence, food insecurity and physical illness; and poor maternal mental health is associated with impairment of infant health and development. Psychological interventions can be integrated into routine maternal and child healthcare i

Exposure to Animal Feces and Human Health: A Systematic Review and Proposed Research Priorities.

Humans can be exposed to pathogens from poorly managed animal feces, particularly in communities where animals live in close proximity to humans. This systematic review of peer-reviewed and gray literature examines the human health impacts of exposure to poorly managed animal feces transmitted via water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH)-related pathways in low- and middle-income countries, where household livestock, small-scale animal operations, and free-roaming animals are common. We identify routes of contamination by animal feces, control measures to reduce human exposure, and propose resear

Patients' priorities for health research: focus group study of patients with chronic kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: The inclusion of consumer preferences in prioritizing research topics is widely advocated, but prioritization is driven largely by professional agendas. METHODS: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) were purposively sampled from four kidney dialysis and transplant centres in Australia to participate in nine focus groups (three each for pre-dialysis, dialysis and transplant patients), which were conducted from July 2006 to September 2006. Each involved 6-8 participants. Transcripts were coded and thematically analysed to identify recurrent research topics and the participants

Tailoring systematic reviews to meet critical priorities in maternal health in the intrapartum period.

Health care practitioners and researchers commonly call for greater reliance on evidence as a means to achieve improvement in quality of care. Systematic reviews provide a means to accelerate the use of evidence-based clinical interventions and public health practices. The extent to which these time- and resource-intensive systematic reviews currently address critical maternal health priorities in the intrapartum period is unclear. This analysis summarises key maternal health and research priorities, maps these priorities to existing reviews, identifies gaps in the literature that can be addre

Geriatric Migraine, Geroscience, and Sustainable Development Goals: Bridging Clinical Complexity and Public Health Priorities.

Background: Migraine in older adults represents an increasingly relevant yet underrecognized clinical challenge in aging societies, where multimorbidity, frailty, and polypharmacy complicate both diagnosis and management. Although traditionally considered a disorder of younger individuals, migraine frequently persists or presents after the age of 60 with atypical features, contributing to diagnostic uncertainty. Methods: This narrative review, conducted in accordance with the SANRA principles, aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the epidemiology, clinical presentation, pathophysiology,

Heat-health warning systems for outdoor workers: recent advances, implementation gaps, and future priorities.

Heat-health warning systems (HHWSs) are moving from population-level alerts toward occupationally relevant forecasts, task-adjusted thresholds, digital guidance, and warning-linked workplace controls. Outdoor workers nevertheless remain under-protected because regional forecasts may not represent job-level exposure and because alert receipt does not ensure that work is modified. This Mini Review critically synthesizes evidence across an occupational warning-to-action pathway: hazard forecasting, task-level risk translation, warning reach and comprehension, workplace action, and health, safety,
