Sharing personal information about anatomical body donors: What first-year medical students want to know and how it affects emotional responses to dissection.

Among educators who teach in the human anatomy laboratory, there has been lively debate about sharing information about anatomical donors. One consideration in this debate is concern about the emotional effect of personalizing donors on the students. The purpose of this study was to evaluate student responses to being exposed to donor information (DI). Three cohorts of first-year medical students (n = 284) were surveyed at four time points throughout the year. Surveys queried students about positive and negative responses to working in the laboratory, wanting to know specific DI, and if knowin

Exploring patterns in resource utilization prior to the formal identification of homelessness in recently returned veterans.

There are limited data on resources utilized by US Veterans prior to their identification as being homeless. We performed visual analytics on longitudinal medical encounter data prior to the official recognition of homelessness in a large cohort of OEF/OIF Veterans. A statistically significant increase in numbers of several categories of visits in the immediate 30 days prior to the recognition of homelessness was noted as compared to an earlier period. This finding has the potential to inform prediction algorithms based on structured data with a view to intervention and mitigation of homelessn

A novel method for estimating transgender status using electronic medical records.

PURPOSE: We describe a novel algorithm for identifying transgender people and determining their male-to-female (MTF) or female-to-male (FTM) identity in electronic medical records of an integrated health system. METHODS: A computer program scanned Kaiser Permanente Georgia electronic medical records from January 2006 through December 2014 for relevant diagnostic codes, and presence of specific keywords (e.g., "transgender" or "transsexual") in clinical notes. Eligibility was verified by review of de-identified text strings containing targeted keywords, and if needed, by an additional in-depth

A point prevalence survey of personality disorder in an Australian secondary care mental health service.

BACKGROUND: Personality disorder is often underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed in secondary care settings. This can lead to challenges in accessing appropriate care for patients, and the allocation of resources in these services. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to estimate the rate of personality disorder in a cohort of individuals presenting to a typical urban secondary care mental health service in Australia. The secondary objective was to compare this to the recorded rate of personality disorder diagnosis in this setting. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was completed for 376 patient

Two routes to privacy protection: a comparison of health information legislation in Canada and the United States.

The privacy of health information is a subject of great sensitivity in both Canada and the United States. As a result of public demands for more effective protection of such information as medical records, Canada and, particularly, its provincial governments, have implemented extensive legislation. The United States, on the other hand, has largely confined its efforts to private sector initiatives that are more reflective of voluntary codes than legal statutes. Because new technologic developments facilitate data sharing in the medical field, especially in the face of a continual reduction of

Applying Indigenous identity definitions in official health statistics: a case study using linked cancer registry data on stomach cancer.

AIM: Ethnicity and descent are two different officially recognised identity definitions for the Indigenous Māori population of New Zealand. Official health statistics are usually reported by Māori ethnicity but not descent, as health collections such as the New Zealand Cancer Registry (NZCR) do not record Māori descent information. We explored the potential of linked administrative data to describe health outcomes by Māori descent using gastric (stomach) cancer as an example. METHODS: The Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI) was used to source information on Māori descent from the 2013 and 20

Demographics and treatment of patients with primary nephrotic syndrome in Japan using a national registry of clinical personal records.

The nationwide clinical features of Japanese patients with primary nephrotic syndrome (NS), including minimal change disease (MCD), focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), or membranous nephropathy (MN), have not yet been reported. We collected the clinical personal records of patients with primary NS between 2015 and 2018 from the national registry organized by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare. Overall, the demographics, chronic kidney disease classification based on glomerular filtration rate and albuminuria, and treatment of 6036 patients were collected: 3394 (56.2%)

"Managing the Binder": A Systematic Review of the Burdens Experienced by Patients and Carers in Managing Personal Health Information Across Fragmented Healthcare Systems.

Background: Fragmented healthcare systems require patients and informal carers to collect, organise, transfer, and interpret personal health information across providers. This review examined the burdens of this work, its management methods, and the evidence for digital tools intended to reduce it. Methods: MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, and the Cochrane Library were searched for English-language primary studies published from January 2000 to 25 June 2026. Eligible studies examined patient- or carer-led management of personal health information in community, outpatient, or longitudinal care. Two rev

The biopsychosocial-spiritual impact upon health information managers from exposure to sensitive information within patient records: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Health Information Managers (HIMs) routinely work with patient records containing detailed accounts of illness, trauma and death. While the biopsychosocial-spiritual (BPSS) impacts of trauma exposure have been widely documented among clinicians, little is known about the wellbeing of non-patient-facing health professionals who are repeatedly exposed to sensitive patient information. OBJECTIVE: To explore the BPSS impacts experienced by HIMs following exposure to information contained within patient records. METHOD: A qualitative study informed by grounded theory methodology was u

A Single-Center Retrospective Review of Patients with Suspected Malignant Hyperthermia Susceptibility.

Purpose The diagnosis of malignant hyperthermia susceptibility (MHS) has significant implications for the perioperative period that may persist for generations. Anesthetic medication options are reduced, anesthetic workstations require preparation to reduce exposure to inhaled volatile anesthetics, and patients may be excluded from surgery at ambulatory centers. In this study, we sought to better characterize the etiology of MHS diagnoses in our health system and the downstream effects of this diagnosis on anesthetic care. Methods We retrospectively reviewed the electronic medical records of 5

[Multimodal document management in radiotherapy].

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: After incorporating treatment planning and the organisational model of treatment planning in the operating schedule system (BAS, "Betriebsablaufsystem"), complete document qualities were embedded in the digital environment. The aim of this project was to integrate all documents independent of their source (paper-bound or digital) and to make content from the BAS available in a structured manner. As many workflow steps as possible should be automated, e.g. assigning a document to a patient in the BAS. Additionally it must be guaranteed that at all times it could be trace

Public Health Response to Tuberculosis Outbreak among Persons Experiencing Homelessness, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, 2017-2018.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a greater risk for populations experiencing homelessness. When a TB exposure occurs in a homeless shelter, evaluation of contacts is both urgent and challenging. In 2017, local public health workers initiated a response to a TB outbreak in homeless shelters in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. In this contact investigation, we incorporated multiple techniques to identify, evaluate, and manage patients, including the concentric-circle method to characterize amount of contact, identifying the most frequent sites of sporadic medical care, using electronic medical records, and enga

Inequalities in ownership and availability of home-based vaccination records in 82 low- and middle-income countries.

INTRODUCTION: Home-based records (HBRs) are widely used for recording health information including child immunisations. We studied levels and inequalities in HBR ownership in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) using data from national surveys conducted since 2010. METHODS: We used data from national household surveys (Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) and Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS)) from 82 LMICs. 465 060 children aged 6-35 months were classified into four categories: HBR seen by the interviewer; mother/caregiver never had an HBR; mother/caregiver had an HBR that

Taming Big Data: An Information Extraction Strategy for Large Clinical Text Corpora.

Concepts of interest for clinical and research purposes are not uniformly distributed in clinical text available in electronic medical records. The purpose of our study was to identify filtering techniques to select 'high yield' documents for increased efficacy and throughput. Using two large corpora of clinical text, we demonstrate the identification of 'high yield' document sets in two unrelated domains: homelessness and indwelling urinary catheters. For homelessness, the high yield set includes homeless program and social work notes. For urinary catheters, concepts were more prevalent in no
