Evaluation of 'Sun-safe': a health education resource for primary schools.

The aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of 'Sun-safe', a computer-based resource designed to promote skin cancer awareness and educate children, aged 10-11 years, about the effects of excessive exposure to the sun and associated skin cancer preventive behaviours. Effectiveness was measured by changes in knowledge, attitudes and behavioural intentions using a self-completed questionnaire. A cluster, controlled evaluation design was used. Twelve schools were randomly allocated to the intervention arms of the study (workbook or computer), with a further four schools acting as control

Heat-health action plans overlook Europe's most important health system resource: the health and care workforce.

Europe is warming at more than twice the global average, and heatwaves increasingly coincide with extreme wildfires, rainfall, floods and storms, creating growing health security risks while intensifying an ongoing health and care workforce crisis. Governments across the European Region have scaled-up action to establish heat-health action plans, supported by comprehensive WHO guidance. However, health and care workers remain largely absent from these strategies, which continue to place their focus on protecting populations rather than the workforce responsible for delivering care. Rural Cardiovascular Health in Missouri: Needs, Care Gaps, and Resources for a More Connected System.

Missouri's rural health needs are inseparable from cardiovascular health. Nearly one-quarter of Missourians live in nonmetro areas, where rural hospitals, clinics, community health centers, emergency medical services agencies, public health departments, and community organizations anchor care. Yet heart disease is the leading cause of death in Missouri; the 20 counties with the highest heart disease death rates are rural; and recent data show higher rural heart disease and stroke mortality than urban Missouri. Cardiovascular risk is shaped by clinical care, primary care access, transportation,

Survey of Resources in Behavioral Sleep Medicine Across the Department of Defense, Defense Health Agency.

INTRODUCTION: Insomnia affects approximately 40% of active duty service members and adversely affects health, readiness, and safety. The VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guideline for the management of insomnia recommends cognitive-behavioral treatment of insomnia (CBTI) or its abbreviated version (brief behavioral treatment of insomnia [BBTI]) as the first-line insomnia treatment. The goal of this study was to assess CBTI/BBTI resources at MTFs, perceived facilitators and barriers for CBTI/BBTI, and gaps in these treatments across the Defense Health Agency. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between July and Oc

Evaluating accuracy and fairness of clinical decision support algorithms when health care resources are limited.

OBJECTIVE: Guidance on how to evaluate accuracy and algorithmic fairness across subgroups is missing for clinical models that flag patients for an intervention but when health care resources to administer that intervention are limited. We aimed to propose a framework of metrics that would fit this specific use case. METHODS: We evaluated the following metrics and applied them to a Veterans Health Administration clinical model that flags patients for intervention who are at risk of overdose or a suicidal event among outpatients who were prescribed opioids (N = 405,817): Receiver - Operating Ch

Tracking global resources and capacity for health research: time to reassess strategies and investment decisions.

The COVID-19 pandemic and more recently the Monkeypox outbreak emphasize the urgency and importance of improving the availability and equitable distribution of resources for health research across rich and poor countries. Discussions about the persistent imbalances in resource allocation for health research between rich and poor countries are not new, but little or no progress has been made in redressing these imbalances over the years. This is critical not only for emergency preparedness, but for the worlds' ability to improve population health in an equitable manner. Concerned with the lack

The use of public health e-learning resources by pharmacists in Wales: a quantitative evaluation.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine how communicable disease e-learning resources were utilised by pharmacy professionals and to identify whether uptake of the resources was influenced by disease outbreaks. METHOD: Retrospective analysis of routine data regarding the number of individuals completing e-learning resources and statutory notifications of communicable disease. RESULTS: A high proportion of pharmacy professionals in Wales (38.8%, n = 915/2357) accessed the resources; around one in six completed multiple resources (n = 156). The most commonly accessed were those where t

Evaluation of knowledge resources for public health reporting logic: Implications for knowledge authoring and management.

To control disease, laboratories and providers are required to report conditions to public health authorities. Reporting logic is defined in a variety of resources, but there is no single resource available for reporters to access the list of reportable events and computable reporting logic for any jurisdiction. In order to develop evidence-based requirements for authoring such knowledge, we evaluated reporting logic in the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologist (CSTE) position statements to assess its readiness for automated systems and identify features that should be considered whe

Packaging health services when resources are limited: the example of a cervical cancer screening visit.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence supporting the value of screening women for cervical cancer once in their lifetime, coupled with mounting interest in scaling up successful screening demonstration projects, present challenges to public health decision makers seeking to take full advantage of the single-visit opportunity to provide additional services. We present an analytic framework for packaging multiple interventions during a single point of contact, explicitly taking into account a budget and scarce human resources, constraints acknowledged as significant obstacles for provision of health s

Alcohol-use problems in young black adults: effects of religiosity, social resources, and mental health.

OBJECTIVE: Problems with alcohol remain a serious public health concern despite decreased use among some populations. Here we examine the relationship between alcohol problems and religiosity, hypothesizing that social resources may mediate this relationship. METHOD: Using data from a longitudinal cohort study of a black community population (N=1242) followed from age 6 to 32, analysis of moment structures (AMOS) multiple regression analyses were used to examine the association of religious involvement and alcohol-use problems, taking into account mediators, moderators, or both. Promoting health for transgender women: Transgender Resources and Neighborhood Space (TRANS) program in San Francisco.

Transgender women are at high risk for HIV, substance abuse, and mental health problems. We describe a health promotion intervention program tailored to transgender women in San Francisco. The program creates a safe space for providing transgender-sensitive education about HIV risk reduction, substance abuse prevention, and general health promotion. Transgender health educators conduct workshops and make referrals to appropriate substance abuse treatment programs and other services in the community. Evaluation findings indicate that this community-tailored intervention may be an effective way

[Occupational stress and assessment of human resources in health: from assessment to the changing process].

Health professionals are at risk for occupational stress, as confirmed by diverse sources including the Italian legislative decree, D.L. 626/94, the Health Promoting Hospital of the World Health Organization, and the Ottawa Charter. The aim of this study was to analyze quantitatively and qualitatively the principal sources of stress in the work environment and the resources, both individual and organizational, that health professionals feel they possess to cope with it. The instruments utilized for the first quantitative phase were: the Maslach Burn out Inventory, the Job Content Questionnaire

Linking communities and health facilities to improve child health in low-resource settings: a systematic review.

Community-facility linkage interventions are gaining popularity as a way to improve community health in low-income settings. Their aim is to create/strengthen a relationship between community members and local healthcare providers. Representatives from both groups can address health issues together, overcome trust problems, potentially leading to participants' empowerment to be responsible for their own health. This can be achieved via different approaches. We conducted a systematic literature review to explore how this type of intervention has been implemented in rural and low or lower-middle

Digital Health Literacy and Self-Efficacy in Using Digital Health Resources Among Caregivers of Individuals with Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias.

This study explored digital health literacy skills, self-efficacy in utilizing digital health resources, and self-efficacy in managing personal health among caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). Data from the Health Information National Trends Survey 2022 were analyzed, involving a sample of 96 family and unpaid caregivers of individuals with ADRD. Among these caregivers, almost half (49.9%) lacked confidence in using digital health resources. While over 70% used digital health tools like accessing medical information and viewing test results, fewer u

People and sites as community resources for preventing and managing chronic health conditions: A conceptual analysis.

The prevention and management of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) require community-based efforts-especially as their burden grows, and recognition of the need for engaging diverse stakeholders in care grows. The aim of this conceptual analysis was to categorise existing community resources (people and sites) used to support such efforts, the mechanisms by which they work, and the conditions that constrain their effectiveness. We developed an initial framework for categorising community resources. We then used a sample of the literature- 24 studies from 12 countries-to refine and enric
