Effectiveness and efficiency of different weight machine-based strength training programmes for patients with hip or knee osteoarthritis: a protocol for a quasi-experimental controlled study in the context of health services research.

INTRODUCTION: Osteoarthritis is a chronic musculoskeletal disease with a major impact on the individual and the healthcare system. As there is no cure, therapy aims for symptom release and reduction of disease progression. Physical exercises have been defined as a core treatment for osteoarthritis. However, research questions related to dose response, sustainability of effects, economic efficiency and safety are still open and will be evaluated in this trial, investigating a progressive weight machine-based strength training. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is a quasi-experimental controlled trial

Technology to improve mental health after an acquired brain injury? A cohort study of research priorities identified by service users, carers, and healthcare professionals in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Research on health-technology for people with acquired brain injury (ABI) is evolving rapidly and accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic. But there is little information on what ABI stakeholders want from this research. We conducted a mixed methods study using an online survey with data collected twice, before and during, the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants were 18 + from three self-identified stakeholder groups: (1) people with ABI, (2) ABI carers, and (3) ABI healthcare professionals. There were 252 participants (55.8%) before the COVID-19 pandemic and 200 (44.2%) during the COVID-19 pande

Hiding in plain sight: highlighting the research gap on access to HIV and other sexual health services for underrepresented gay men in developed Western countries - insights from a scoping review with a focus on Arab men.

BACKGROUND: Strategies pertaining to HIV and sexual health for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) have shifted focus towards underrepresented subgroups within some developed Western countries. Although emerging research exists on some subgroups, limited attention has been given to the needs of Arab GBMSM in these contexts. Considering they are part of a large diaspora, understanding their access to services is crucial. This paper focuses on Arab GBMSM as a case study within a scoping review, highlighting their hidden status within the broader landscape of HIV and sexual

Understanding the uptake of a clinical innovation for osteoarthritis in primary care: a qualitative study of knowledge mobilisation using the i-PARIHS framework.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis is a leading cause of pain and disability worldwide. Despite research supporting best practice, evidence-based guidelines are often not followed. Little is known about the implementation of non-surgical models of care in routine primary care practice. From a knowledge mobilisation perspective, the aim of this study was to understand the uptake of a clinical innovation for osteoarthritis and explore the journey from a clinical trial to implementation. METHODS: This study used two methods: secondary analysis of focus groups undertaken with general practice staff from

The Time to Act Is Now: Strengthening Health Systems Research Capacity, Capability and Knowledge Translation in Remote Australia.

CONTEXT: Communities in remote Australia face poorer health outcomes but are largely recipients of services, programs and policies that are disconnected from local experiences and priorities, with some notable exceptions. Local-level research capacity, capability and knowledge translation that respond to community and service provider priorities are key to strengthening remote health systems. AIM: To explore two questions: (1) What is needed to strengthen health systems research capacity and capability in remote Australia? (2) How can we, as a community of remote health systems researchers, e

Commentary: Developing Relationships through Trust in Indigenous Health Research.

Developing strong relationships between researchers and Indigenous partners and communities is crucial for mutually beneficial and appropriate Indigenous health research. However, explanations on the need for strong relationships and how they may be achieved are not often found within the research literature. Given the history of mistrust, exploitation and even unethical research practices with Indigenous populations, collaborative research partnerships necessitate good relationships. For our long-standing community-based participatory research partnership, trust in our relationships has been

Involving the public in mental health and learning disability research: Can we, should we, do we?

UNLABELLED: WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: UK health policy is clear that researchers should involve the public throughout the research process. The public, including patients, carers and/or local citizens can bring a different and valuable perspective to the research process and improve the quality of research undertaken. Conducting health research is demanding with tight deadlines and scarce resources. This can make involving the public in research very challenging. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: This is the first time the attitudes of researchers working in mental health and l

"Weaving a Mat That We Can All Sit On": Qualitative Research Approaches for Productive Dialogue in the Intercultural Space.

Research remains a site of struggle for First Nations peoples globally. Biomedical research often reinforces existing power structures, perpetuating ongoing colonisation by dominating research priorities, resource allocation, policies, and services. Addressing systemic health inequities requires decolonising methodologies to facilitate new understandings and approaches. These methodologies promote a creative tension and productive intercultural dialogue between First Nations and Western epistemologies. Concurrently, the potential of critical theory, social science, and community participatory

Impact evaluation of contracting primary health care services in urban Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: The Urban Primary Health Care Project (UPHCP) was implemented by the Government of Bangladesh in response to rapid urbanization and growing inequalities in access to and quality of primary health care. The goal of the project was to improve health status of the urban poor living in city corporations and municipalities through the provision of health care services by NGOs that are contracted through public-private partnership. The first phase of the project started in 1998 and the project is currently in its fourth phase covering more urban areas than the first three phases. This st

Barriers to integrating the continuum of care for opioid and alcohol use disorders in primary care: A qualitative longitudinal study.

Untreated substance use disorders remain a pervasive public health problem in the United States, especially among medically-underserved and low-income populations, with opioid and alcohol use disorders (OAUD) being of particular concern. Primary care is an underutilized resource for delivering treatment for OAUD, but little is known about the organizational capacity of community-based primary care clinics to integrate treatment for OAUD. The objective of this study was to use an organizational capacity framework to examine perceived barriers to implementing the continuum of care for OAUD in a
