BACKGROUND: The report from the World Health Organization (WHO) reveals that health spending worldwide remains highly unequal as more than 80% of the world's population live in low and middle-income countries but only account for about 20% of global health expenditure. Another report by the WHO on the state of health financing in Africa published in 2013 intimates that countries that are part of their member states are still on the average level in meeting set goals in financing key health projects.
OBJECTIVE: The study set out to investigate the association between public and private spendin

PURPOSE: Perceived social status (PSS), a measure of social status, reflects cumulative lifetime effects of an individual's relative social status based on resources and lived experiences. PSS is hypothesized to better capture social status compared to traditional measures of socioeconomic status (SES) (i.e., education, occupation, and income). Although recognized as a predictor of health-related morbidity and mortality, limited research has explored PSS and oral health. This study investigated PSS as a predictor of self-reported oral health among low-income adults.

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity in children and youth in India is a major public health problem. The 2016 Indian Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth has been conceptualized to highlight this epidemic by appraising behaviors, contexts, strategies, and investments related to physical activity of Indian children and youth.
METHODS: An international research collaboration resulted in the formation of a Research Working Group (RWG). RWG determined key indicators; identified, synthesized, and analyzed existing evidence; developed criteria for assigning grades; and, finally, assi

BACKGROUND: The Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation (WIMD) is an area-based deprivation measure comprising eight domains, produced by the Welsh Government to rank Lower Layer Super Output Areas (LSOAs) in Wales. Researchers use the WIMD to account for deprivation, however, as one domain contains health indicators, there is a risk of endogeneity bias when using the WIMD in research on health outcomes. This study evaluated the effect on study results of removing the health domain from the overall WIMD or using only the income domain as deprivation measures.
METHODS: WIMD 2019 scores were linked

OBJECTIVE: Health utilities represent preference values that persons attach to health states. This study aims to develop one general and six country-specific algorithms to calculate societal preference values for health of patients with spondyloarthritis (SpA), as assessed by the disease-specific Assessment of SpondyloArthritis international Society Health Index (ASAS HI).
METHODS: A survey was performed in random population samples from six European countries. In a best-worst choice experiment, subjects were asked to indicate repeatedly which of 4 random aspects of the 17-item ASAS HI was we

AIMS: To investigate the development of healthy life expectancy from 65 years (HLE65) in Sweden in the period 1980 and 2010 by using two different health indicators: self-rated health and the global activity limitation indicator (GALI).
METHODS: Sources of data for the HLE computations were Swedish national mortality statistics and the nationwide Swedish Survey of Living Conditions (SSLC), which have been conducted biennially by Statistics Sweden since 1974. We used the Sullivan method for calculations of HLE. A decomposition into mortality and disability effect has been made in accordance wi

Last decades the phenomenon of ageing population at the expense of reduction of birth rate and continuous growth of life expectancy is observed and moreover the life expectancy increase has almost linear character. In our opinion, this growth will stop the next years and there will be a considerable reduction of life expectancy. Roughly it should occur after 2010 year when the persons born in second half of the XXth century, i.e. after 1950 year, will start to enter advanced age. The reason of this drama consist in our opinion in catastrophic deterioration of primary health at persons born in

BACKGROUND: Depression impairs health status among patients with coronary disease. The effect of depression on patients with heart failure has been studied to date only in hospitalized patients.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Prospective cohort study of 113 outpatients with advanced heart failure. At baseline, 19% (n = 21) had major depression or dysthymia, 9% (n = 10) had minor depression, and 72% (n = 82) had no current depression diagnosis. Repeated measures analyses of covariance adjusting for demographic and clinical differences demonstrated that the depression groups differed on observed function

OBJECTIVES: The Millennium Development Goals (MIDGs) have put maternal health in the mainstream, but there is a need to go beyond the MDGs to address equity within countries. We argue that MDG focus on maternal health is necessary but not sufficient. This paper uses Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data from Kenya, Ethiopia and Ghana to examine a set of maternal health indicators stratified along five different dimensions. The study highlights the interactive and multiple forms of disadvantage and demonstrates that equity monitoring for the MDGs is possible, even given current data limitati

One of the little known ironies in the field of prison health is the notion that prison may actually have health-stabilizing effects for some groups. This study contributes to this line of inquiry by examining a variety of physical and mental health indicators among an older cohort of prisoners. Furthermore, this study's focus on race addresses a notable gap in the growing literature on older prisoner health. A cross-section of 625 males who were incarcerated residing in a northeastern state prison system was surveyed and data on self-reported health status and stress and individual demographi

OBJECTIVE: The Childhood Health Assessment Questionnaire (CHAQ) is a commonly used measure of disability and physical function for children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA), whose scores range between 0 (no disability) and 3 (very severe disability), with a smallest potential difference in the CHAQ score of individuals at 0.125. We estimated minimal clinically important differences (MCID) of the CHAQ for worsening and improvement that were actually experienced by children with JRA using patient, parent, and clinical perspectives.
METHODS: Changes in CHAQ scores were calculated for par

We studied the relationship between daily training load (TL) experienced by professional soccer players and the Hooper questionnaire reflecting their perceived quality of sleep, fatigue, stress and delayed onset muscle soreness. During a 16-week training period, the rating of perceived exertion and duration were collected after each training session, and daily TL was calculated from 14 professional soccer players. The Hooper questionnaire was completed every day before the first training session and the Hooper's score (HS) was then calculated. The daily TL and HS were 379.9 ± 198.3 AU and 16.2

This article emphasizes the complexity underlying the assessment of physical function. The concept of physical function is multidimensional; individuals or groups can be assessed; the assessments can be either preintervention measures or outcome measures. Six issues of measurement are discussed: verbal report versus behavior; self-reported versus proxy-reported information; capacity versus performance; assumptions in Activities of Daily Living and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living measurement; differences between items and instruments; and the search for a summary index. Specific instrum
