Cleidocranial dysplasia is an inherited skeletal anomaly that affects primarily the skull, clavicle, and dentition, which can occur spontaneously, but most are inherited in autosomal dominant mode. The skull findings are brachycephaly, delayed or failed closure of the fontanelles, presence of open skull sutures and multiple wormian bones with pronounced frontal bossing. The syndrome is notable for aplasia or hypoplasia of the clavicles. The neck appears long and narrow and the shoulders markedly droop. Oral manifestations exhibit a hypoplastic maxilla with high-arched palate. Crowding of teeth

Background. Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) caused by opiate abuse or overuse has been well documented in the medical literature. Most documented case reports have involved either heroin or hydrocodone/acetaminophen. Recently, case reposts of methadone induced SSHL have been published. Case Report. We present the case of a 31-year-old man who developed SSHL after a methadone overdose induced stupor. He was subsequently restarted on methadone at his regular dose. On follow-up audiometry exams, he displayed persistent moderately severe sensorineural hearing loss bilaterally. Discussion.

Hearing loss affects approximately one-third of adults 61 to 70 years of age and more than 80 percent of those older than 85 years. Men usually experience greater hearing loss and have earlier onset compared with women. The most common type is age-related hearing loss; however, many conditions can interfere with the conduction of sound vibrations to the inner ear and their conversion to electrical impulses for conduction to the brain. Screening for hearing loss is recommended in adults older than 50 to 60 years. Office screening tests include the whispered voice test and audioscopy. Older pati

The aim of this review is to provide an updated overview of hereditary hearing loss, with special attention to the etiological diagnosis of sensorineural hearing loss, the genes most frequently mutated in our environment, the techniques available for their analysis and the clinical implications of genetic diagnosis. More than 60% of childhood sensorineural hearing loss is genetic. In adults, the percentage of hereditary hearing loss is unknown. Genetic testing is the highest yielding test for evaluating patients with sensorineural hearing loss. The process of genetic counselling is intended to

A review of literature on the development of sensorineural hearing loss after high-dose radiation therapy for head-and-neck tumors and stereotactic radiosurgery or fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy for the treatment of vestibular schwannoma is presented. Because of the small volume of the cochlea a dose-volume analysis is not feasible. Instead, the current literature on the effect of the mean dose received by the cochlea and other treatment- and patient-related factors on outcome are evaluated. Based on the data, a specific threshold dose to cochlea for sensorineural hearing loss cannot b

Deafness appears to have a various impact on daily life, depending on the severity of the hearing loss. More often, mild and medium hearing loss are quickly rehabilited with hearing aids. Severe and profound hearing losses require a multidisciplinary evaluation, to determine the best treatment (speech therapy, cochlear implantation). Audiologic evaluation can be completed by handicap inventory specific for hearing loss, in order to appreciate the individual impact. Recently in France (2005) a law has demonstrated the determination of State's institutions to improve the daily life with handicap

BACKGROUND: Pseudoexfoliation (PEX), which affects anterior segment structures, is thought to be a systemic disorder. The purpose of this study was to determine the possible relation between PEX and sensorineural hearing loss.
METHODS: The study group included 51 patients with PEX and 22 controls without PEX. The patients and controls underwent complete ophthalmic and otorhinolaryngologic examinations. Hearing levels were evaluated with audio-tympanogram battery in all cases, and pure-tone audiogram hearing levels were classified into 6 groups.
RESULTS: The mean age of PEX subjects was 67.5

Mitochondrial diseases (MD) are a clinically heterogeneous group of disorders that arise as a result of dysfunction of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is often associated to mitochondrial dysfunctions both in syndromic, nonsyndromic forms. SNHL has been described in association to different mitochondrial multisystemic syndromes, often characterized by an important neuromuscular involvement. Because of the clinical relevance of the associated neurological symptoms, the occurrence of SNHL is often underestimated and undiagnosed. In this study we evaluated t

Mitochondrial pathology plays an important role in both inherited and acquired hearing loss. Inherited mitochondrial DNA mutations have been implicated in both syndromic and non-syndromic hearing loss, as well as in predisposition to aminoglycoside ototoxicity. Acquired mitochondrial dysfunction in the absence of mitochondrial DNA mutations has also been proposed as playing an important role in noise-induced and toxin-induced hearing loss. Presbycusis, the hearing loss associated with aging, may be caused by mitochondrial dysfunction resulting from the accumulation of acquired mitochondrial DN

AIMS: There is increasing evidence that pseudoexfoliation (PXF) not only affects ocular anterior segment structures, but may also be a systemic disease. This study was undertaken to assess the relationship between PXF and sensorineural hearing loss.
METHODS: Patients with PXF were identified from hospital records and underwent complete ocular examination. The sum of pure-tone hearing thresholds measured at 1, 2 and 3 kHz (HTL1,2,3) in each ear was compared with the ISO 7029 standard sex-matched, median age-associated hearing loss summed over the same frequencies (AAHL1,2,3). The techniques of human molecular genetics have been rapidly applied to the study of hearing loss. These studies have implicated more than 60 loci as causes of nonsyndromic hearing loss. Mutations at more than a dozen nuclear genes have been demonstrated to cause hearing loss, and these have been covered in recent reviews. However, a perhaps unexpected feature of the molecular characterization of human hearing loss has been the occurrence of mutations in the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). The importance of mitochondrial function in hearing is emphasized by the recent discovery of mutations in a nu

Little has been reported about the effect on auditory tube function of ablative surgery for maxillary neoplasms. Operations on the muscles of the soft palate may cause conductive hearing loss by impairing the opening of the auditory tube, which results in a middle ear effusion. Sensorineural hearing loss may also follow adjuvant radiotherapy. In this retrospective study we aimed to assess hearing status in patients who had undergone maxillary surgery for neoplastic disease between 1987 and 1997. Data recorded included personal details, site and size of lesion, treatment, and histology. Thirty-
