Robust Estimation of Unsteady Beat-to-Beat Systolic Blood Pressure Trends Using Photoplethysmography Contextual Cycles.

Hypertension and blood pressure variability (BPV) are major risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Single-channel photoplethysmography (PPG) has emerged as a promising daily blood pressure (BP) monitoring tool. However, estimating BP trends presents challenges due to complex temporal dependencies and continuous fluctuations. Traditional methods often address BP prediction as isolated tasks and focus solely on temporal dependencies within a limited time window, which may fall short of capturing the intricate BP fluctuation patterns implied in varying time spans, particularly amidst cons

Blood Pressure and Heart Rate Measurements Using Fiber Bragg Grating Sensor with Optical Power Detection Scheme.

A low-cost dual-FBG (fiber Bragg grating) architecture is employed to capture the pulse waveform of the artery at the subject's wrist by measuring changes in optical power. The pulse transit time (PTT), pulse ascending time, and pulse descending time extracted from the pulse waveform are used in a blood pressure (BP) estimation model by fitting the measured BP with the reference BP obtained from a commercial sphygmomanometer. The estimation model is developed using data from 29 subjects at the age of 20 to 54. The results demonstrate that the errors between the calculated values and reference

Early identification of vascular access site complications and frequent heart rate and blood pressure monitoring after cardiac catheterization: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Nurses perform frequent heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP) monitoring, a widespread and longstanding practice, after cardiac catheterization (CC) to identify vascular access site complications for femoral and radial arterial approach in adult patients. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this scoping review was to answer two questions: (1) how does the available evidence support frequent HR and BP monitoring after CC via femoral and radial approach in adult patients and (2) how does this practice prompt bedside nurses in identifying the procedure's major vascular access site complica

[Definition of hypertension based on a prevalence study of 1,423 young adults].

The prevalence of arterial hypertension (AH) was studied in 1423 individuals (702 males and 721 females) aged 21 years (Fig. 1, Table 1). Systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressures and heart rate (HR) were measured three times on two different occasions separated by at least one week. Three different criteria were used to define AH (Table 3): 1) World Health Organization (WHO) [PAD > or = 95 mmHg in one casual determination]; Joint National Committee IV (JNC-4) [PAD > or = 90 mmHg on two different occasions]; and 3) Statistical [PAD > percentile 95 of the respective distribution]. [Quality assurance in Riva-Rocci blood pressure measurement: simultaneous sphygmomanometry with open and covered pressure display].

The indirect measurement of arterial blood pressure according to Riva-Rocci is one of the most frequently performed medical diagnostic procedures. When properly performed, this method yields accurate readings compared with intraarterial measurements. However, measurements by means of conventional sphygmomanometers are subject to observer error and variability. Therefore, to eliminate important sources of bias (terminal digit preference of the observer, rate of inflation and deflation of the cuff), and to quantify interobserver variability, a new sphygmomanometer has been developed. The new ins

Does orthopaedic surgical training induce hypertension? A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Elevated blood pressure (BP) is associated with increased cardiovascular risks manifested by ischemic heart disease and stroke. Studies of cardiothoracic surgeons and neurosurgeons suggest surgery induces a hemodynamic stress malresponse. However, it is unclear whether these occur in orthopaedic surgeons. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We measured the BP of surgeons during hallux valgus surgery, TKA, and THA with the: (1) trainee assisting the trainer, (2) the trainer assisting the trainee, (3) the trainee operating independently, and (4) compared the intraoperative changes in BP and heart r

Initial orthostatic hypotension as a cause of recurrent syncope: a case report.

A 60-year-old male patient with recurrent unexplained syncope on standing was studied. During continuous, noninvasive blood pressure (BP) recording with a Finapres device, an abnormally large and symptomatic initial decrease in systemic BP was documented. After 2 minutes of standing, BP had recovered. The transient decrease in BP was attributed to the use of a combination of antidepressants known to interfere with sympathetic function. This case shows the importance of continuous, noninvasive BP measurement on standing: routine intermittent BP recording would have missed the abnormality. In pa

[Study on measuring blood pressure and heart rate in patients taking antipsychotics].

To decrease the prevalence of orthostatic hypotension in patients taking antipsychotics 62 pchizophrenics' blood pressure and heart rate were measured at different posture. The data showed that the systolic pressure, diastolic pressure and heart rate in supine position were statistically different from those at standing position (P < 0.01). In standing position the heart rate was 41/min higher, the systolic pressure 1.32 kPa lower and the diastolic pressure 1.2 kPa higher than those in supine position. The systolic pressure of 5 cases were normal in supine position and under 12 kPa in standing

Factors modifying ischemic injury in the isolated rat heart.

The extent of ischemic injury has been studied in the isolated working rat heart utilizing an aortic ball valve that reduces the coronary flow. A number of factors were tested including high heart rate, noradrenaline, acidosis, alkalosis, high afterload, beta-blockade, glucose-insulin-potassium (GIK), palmitate and methylprednisolone. Mechanical performance, myocardial contents of ATP, creatine phosphate, glycogen and lactate and the leakage of creatine phosphokinase (CK) from the myocardium to the perfusion buffer were measured and used for determination of the ischemic injury. Positive Effects of the Reversion of Depression on the Sympathovagal Balance after Telerehabilitation in Heart Failure Patients.

BACKGROUND: Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction appears in the course of both chronic heart failure (CHF) and depression. Comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation (CCR), apart from improving physical capacity, can reduce depressive symptoms and leads to the restoration of ANS function among CHF patients. The purpose was to evaluate the influence of the reversion of depression (measured by Beck Depression Inventory [BDI] score, cut point <10) and the physical capacity improvement (measured by peak oxygen consumption [peak VO2 ; ml/kg per minute]) on the sympathovagal balance (measured by low

Biventricular stimulation to prevent cardiac desynchronization: rationale, design, and endpoints of the 'Biventricular Pacing for Atrioventricular Block to Prevent Cardiac Desynchronization (BioPace)' study.

Despite the deleterious effects of cardiac dyssynchrony and the positive effects of cardiac resynchronization therapy, patients with high-degree atrioventricular block continue to receive desynchronizing right ventricular (RV) pacing systems. Although it is unclear whether the negative effects of RV pacing and left bundle branch block (LBBB) are comparable, and whether they depend on the presence and the degree of structural heart disease, one may hypothesize that RV pacing may have similar effects to LBBB. In the BioPace trial, the long-term effects of RV pacing vs. biventricular pacing will

Heart beat detection in multimodal data using automatic relevant signal detection.

Accurate R peak detection in the electrocardiogram (ECG) is a well-known and highly explored problem in biomedical signal processing. Although a lot of progress has been made in this area, current methods are still insufficient in the presence of extreme noise and/or artifacts such as loose electrodes. Often, however, not only the ECG is recorded, but multiple signals are simultaneously acquired from the patient. Several of these signals, such as blood pressure, can help to improve the heart beat detection. These signals of interest can be detected automatically by analyzing their power spectr

Evaluation of In-Ear and Fingertip-Based Photoplethysmography Sensors for Measuring Cardiac Vagal Tone Relevant Heart Rate Variability Parameters.

This paper presents a study undertaken to evaluate the sensor systems that were shortlisted to be used in the development of a portable respiratory-gated transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) system. To date, all published studies assessing respiratory-gated taVNS have been performed in controlled laboratory environments. This limitation arises from the reliance on non-portable sensing equipment, which poses significant logistical challenges. Therefore, we recognised a need to develop a portable sensor system for future research, enabling participants to perform respiratory-

Pathological laughing and crying in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is related to frontal cortex function.

The syndrome of pathological laughing and crying (PLC) is characterized by episodes of involuntary outbursts of emotional expression. Although this phenomenon has been referred to for over a century, a clear-cut clinical definition is still lacking, and underlying pathophysiological mechanisms are not well understood. In particular, it remains ill-defined which kind of stimuli-contextually appropriate or inappropriate-elicit episodes of PLC, and if the phenomenon is a result of a lack of inhibition from the frontal cortex ("top-down-theory") or due to an altered processing of sensory inputs at

The cardiac response to a small i.v. dose of dihydralazine, a safe drug for diagnostic tests?

Dihydralazine, given in small i.v. doses, has been of great value in diagnostic tests for unilateral renovascular hypertension, where it enhances renin release on the affected side. The acute hemodynamic effects of an i.v. dose of 0.1 mg/kg b.wt. were studied in 14 patients with essential hypertension, using a quantitative renographic technique for determination of effective renal plasma flow and radiocardiographic technique for determination of the parameters in systemic circulation. Cardiac index increased from 4.040 to 6.423 1/min.m2 (p less than 0.01), stroke index from 59 to 66 ml/beat.m2

24-hour electrocardiogram before and during cisapride treatment in neonates and infants.

We studied prospectively the effects of cisapride on heart rate and rhythm using standard ECG and 24-hour ECG recordings in term and preterm neonates and infants. We studied subjects with gastroesophageal reflux disease (apparent life-threatening events, apneas, bradycardias) before and 3 days after starting cisapride (0.8 mg/kg/day in 4 doses). We performed standard ECGs for determination of corrected Q-T interval (QTc) and Q-T dispersion (QTd) and 24-hour ECG recordings for analysis of heart rate, heart rate variability, and heart rhythm. Automated high-throughput heartbeat quantification in medaka and zebrafish embryos under physiological conditions.

Accurate quantification of heartbeats in fish models is an important readout to study cardiovascular biology, disease states and pharmacology. However, dependence on anaesthesia, laborious sample orientation or requirement for fluorescent reporters have hampered the use of high-throughput heartbeat analysis. To overcome these limitations, we established an efficient screening assay employing automated label-free heart rate determination of randomly oriented, non-anesthetized medaka (Oryzias latipes) and zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos in microtiter plates. Automatically acquired bright-field d
