Simultaneous exposure to lead, arsenic and mercury from Indian ethnic remedies.

We report the case of an Asian woman who was exposed to toxic levels of lead, arsenic and mercury through the use of Indian ethnic remedies, and who suffered symptomatic lead poisoning. We know of no other case of exposure to such a combination of heavy metals from this source. We believe that control of the dispensing of these compounds is essential.

Heavy Metal Toxicity in Chronic Renal Failure and Cardiovascular Disease: Possible Role for Chelation Therapy.

Exposure to heavy metals is common. This exposure is related to environmental contamination of air, water and soil, occupational exposure, accumulation in food, tobacco, and other factors. Cadmium and lead are notable for their widespread contamination, long-lasting effects in the body, and renal as well as cardiovascular toxicity. Acute toxicity due to high-level exposure, as well as chronic low-level exposure are now well-established pathogenic entities. Both chronic renal failure and ischemic heart disease patients have been treated separately in recent studies with ethylenediaminetetraacet

[Heavy metals in the enviroment: Guillain-Barre like syndrome].

Guillain-Barré syndrome is an entity of diverse etiology, characterized by acute, symmetric, ascending and progressive muscle weakness, being one of the most frequent acquired polyneuropathies in childhood. Neuropathies produced by heavy metals, mercury and lead, and metalloids, such as arsenic, organophosphorus pesticides and carbon tetrachloride, should be considered among the differential diagnoses. We present a 14-year-old patient with a presumptive diagnosis of Guillain-Barré syndrome without response to conventional treatment with gamma globulin. Considering other etiologies, heavy metal

Health concerns of heavy metals and metalloids.

There is a long history and an overwhelming amount of data on the toxicity of heavy metal compounds. Here a brief look is taken of some aspects of the toxicity of lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic, chosen for their historical importance and environmental significance, highlighting especially the contrast between the acute and chronic toxicity of purely inorganic species and their organic derivatives. For further details of other toxic metal compounds, the reader might like to consult "Elements of murder: a history of poison" by John Emsley (2005, Oxford University Press).

Toxins to treatments: Impact of environmental pollutants, gut microbiota, and natural compounds on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease progression.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the fastest-growing global contributor to the disease burden associated with the consequences of chronic liver disease, including cirrhosis and liver cancer. It is projected that more than fifty percent of the adult population, including women, smokers, and individuals without metabolic syndrome, will have NAFLD by 2040. Various mechanisms linking the gut microbiome to NAFLD and the consequent fibrosis have been discerned, which suggest the dysbiosis-induced impairment of gut endothelial barrier function, leading to hepatic inflammation through the

Diversity of epiphytic lichens and metal contents of Parmelia caperata thalli as monitors of air pollution in the town of Pistoia (c Italy).

The results of a biomonitoring survey carried out in the town of Pistoia (central Italy) using the biodiversity of epiphytic lichens and the accumulation of heavy metals in thalli of Parmelia caperata as indicators of air pollution are reported. Compared to previous surveys, the overall situation generally improved, with higher lichen diversity at most stations and lower metal concentrations in P. caperata thalli. However, the general picture according to a calibrated sale of environmental naturality/alteration was substantially negative, with about 87% of the study area classified as 'altered

Rapid detection of chemical hazards (toxins, dioxins, and PCBs) in seafood.

Among the various hazards occurring in fish and seafood chemical hazards and in particular toxins (ciguatera, scombroid fish poisoning, paralytic shellfish poisoning, neurotoxic (brevetoxic) shellfish poisoning, puffer fish poisoning, diarrhetic shellfish poisoning) have an important place in food poisoning cases. On the other hand, some of the chemical hazards are often due to the pollution of the environment (heavy metals, dioxins, polychlorinated biphenyls, and halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons) and their detection is neither rapid nor facile. As a result there was a great need for developi

Antidotes--inappropriate timely availability.

The aim of this study was to determine the availability of antidotes to poisons in Wales and the South West of England. A stocklist of antidotes that are available to accident and emergency departments was requested and was compared with recommendations from the International Programme on Chemical Safety (IPCS). Chief pharmacists were invited to complete a short questionnaire regarding knowledge of existing guidelines. Thirty-four of 43 centres replied (response rate 77%). No department held all 36 antidotes (mean 13, range 7-33). All departments held antidotes that were frequently used. Ninet

Assessment of human exposure to cadmium and its nephrotoxicity in the Chinese population.

BACKGROUND: Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic heavy metal that widely detected in environment and accumulated in kidney, posing a great threat to human health. However, there is a lack of systematic investigation of exposure profile and association of Cd exposure with renal function in the Chinese population. METHODS: Related articles were searched from PubMed, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Internet, and Wanfang to construct an aggregate exposure pathway (AEP) framework for Cd and to explore the correlation between Cd and renal function using random effects models. RESULTS: A total of 220 a

Critical parameters affecting the thermal resistance of alkali-activated aluminosilicate wastes: Current understanding and future directions.

Many research articles and reviews have recognized alkali-activated materials (AAMs) as eco-friendly alternative binders to ordinary Portland cement (OPC) due to their economic andenvironmental advantages. However, few literature surveys reported the physical, mechanical and microstructural changes that occur after the exposure of AAMs to elevated temperatures. Owing to the wide diversity in the properties of aluminosilicates, alkali-activation conditions, and additives, a deep survey is needed to understand how different factors can affect the performance of AAMs under elevated temperatures.

Aging erythrocyte membranes as biomimetic nanometer carriers of liver-targeting chromium poisoning treatment.

Chromium poisoning has become one of the most common heavy metal poisoning occupational diseases with high morbidity and mortality. However, most antidotes detoxify the whole body and are highly toxic. To achieve hepato-targeted chromium poisoning detoxification, a novel hepato-targeted strategy was developed using aging erythrocyte membranes (AEMs) as biomimetic material coated with a dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) nanostructured lipid carrier to construct a biomimetic nano-drug delivery system. The particle size, potential, drug loading, encapsulation rate, in vitro release, and stability of

Systematic Review of Human Poisoning and Toxic Exposures in Myanmar.

The International Health Regulations (2005) promote national capacity in core institutions so that countries can better detect, respond to and recover from public health emergencies. In accordance with the 'all hazards' approach to public health risk, this systematic review examines poisoning and toxic exposures in Myanmar. A systematic literature search was undertaken to find articles pertaining to poisoning in Myanmar published between 1998 and 2020. A number of poisoning risks are identified in this review, including snakebites, heavy metals, drugs of abuse, agrochemicals and traditional me

Tracing and source fingerprinting of metals from the southern coastal sediments in Bangladesh.

Trace element pollution from anthropogenic sources is increasingly widespread. This pollution in terrestrial environments threatens agricultural crop production, while in aquatic environments, it threatens fish cultivation. The contamination of these crucial food sources raises significant concerns regarding food safety, security, and its potential adverse effects on human health. Coastal areas are particularly vulnerable to heavy metal pollution due to their proximity to industrial and urban centres, as well as their susceptibility to contamination from marine sources. In attempting to identi

Metal chelators and neurotoxicity: lead, mercury, and arsenic.

This article reviews the clinical use of the metal chelators sodium 2,3-dimercapto-1-propanesulfonate (DMPS), meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), and calcium disodium edetate (CaEDTA, calcium EDTA) in overexposure and poisonings with salts of lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), and arsenic (As). DMSA has considerably lower toxicity than the classic heavy metal antagonist BAL (2,3-dimercaptopropanol) and is also less toxic than DMPS. Because of its adverse effects, CaEDTA should be replaced by DMSA as the antidote of choice in treating moderate Pb poisoning. Combination therapy with BAL and CaEDTA wa

Moringa oleifera Supplementation for Reducing Heavy Metal Toxicity and Oxidative Stress in Pregnant Women: Protocol for a Nonrandomized Trial Study.

BACKGROUND: Heavy metals present in the environment, including lead, cadmium, and mercury, pose significant health risks to pregnant women and fetal development through food, water, and air contamination. Exposure to these metals has been linked to miscarriage, low birth weight (LBW), preterm birth, and developmental issues in children. The mechanism of oxidative stress, characterized by increased 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, contributes to DNA damage, genomic instability, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Additionally, DNA methylation changes induced by

Toward a Mechanism-Driven Integrated Framework to Link Human Exposure to Multiple Toxic Metal(loid) Species with Environmental Diseases.

The ongoing anthropogenic pollution of the biosphere with As, Cd, Hg and Pb will inevitably result in an increased influx of their corresponding toxic metal(loid) species into the bloodstream of human populations, including children and pregnant women. To delineate whether the measurable concentrations of these inorganic pollutants in the bloodstream are tolerable or implicated in the onset of environmental diseases urgently requires new insight into their dynamic bioinorganic chemistry in the bloodstream-organ system. Owing to the human exposure to multiple toxic metal(loid) species, the mech
