BACKGROUND: The Helicobacter heilmannii sensu lato (H. heilmannii s.l.) group consists of long, spiral-shaped bacteria naturally colonizing the stomach of animals. Moreover, bacteria belonging to this group have been observed in 0.2-6% of human gastric biopsy specimens, and associations have been made with the development of chronic gastritis, peptic ulceration, and gastric MALT lymphoma in humans.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: To gain insight into the prevalence of H. heilmannii s.l. infections in patients suffering from gastric disease in China, H. heilmannii s.l. species-specific PCRs were perfor

Helicobacter species colonize the stomachs of many aquatic and terrestrial mammals, including Helicobacter pylori in humans and Helicobacter cetorum in dolphins. There are several H. cetorum genome sequences in databases, but a detailed molecular characterization of these bacteria is missing. Here, we compared four H. cetorum isolates from dolphins with H. pylori strains using electron microscopy as well as structural and functional analyses. All strains expressed similarly high urease activity and were hemolytic to erythrocytes. Western blots revealed conserved expression of flagellin-A, neut

Gastric Helicobacter species, including Helicobacter pylori and non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter (NHPH) species, are gram-negative fastidious bacteria that colonize the stomachs of both humans and animals such as pigs, dogs, cats, and monkeys. The H. pylori infection rate is decreasing due to improved living conditions and increased opportunities for H. pylori eradication therapy in developed countries. However, concerns about NHPH infection-induced gastric diseases are growing, especially low-grade gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. Although NHPH infections have been repo

During the course of our taxonomic investigation of Helicobacter cinaedi, it was realized that the strains isolated from dogs, which have been identified as H. cinaedi, showed different biochemical traits than did the isolates obtained from humans. None of the three dog isolates could reduce nitrate to nitrite, whereas all of the human H. cinaedi isolates could do so. The dog isolates showed a strong positive alkaline phosphatase reaction and could grow at 42°C, however the human isolates showed negative to very weak responses to those tests. The GyrA protein based phylogenetic analysis showed

Although Helicobacter infections of laboratory mice are usually subclinical, they may interfere with in vivo experiments and thus may lead to misinterpretation of data. As such, it is important to provide a means to unequivocally identify infections with murine Helicobacter spp. In the present study, a nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was established and shown to be 10 to 100 times more sensitive than the single-step PCR commonly used for routine diagnosis of Helicobacter spp. Experimental infection of Helicobacter-free mice demonstrated that faeces, caecum, colon and rectum but not live

BACKGROUND/AIMS: We measured the levels of IgG antibody in patients treated for H. pylori infection using four commercially available ELISA (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay) kits.
METHODOLOGY: A total of 37 patients with peptic ulcers (21 patients had gastric ulcers and 16 patients had duodenal ulcers) were treated and monitored. These patients were treated for 14 days with either a dual therapy regime consisting of amoxicillin at 1,500 mg per day and omeprazole at 20 mg per day or a triple therapy regime consisting of the same medications as above plus metronidazole at 1,000 mg per day. BACKGROUND: Non-Helicobacter pylori helicobacters (NHPHs) besides H. pylori infect human stomachs and cause chronic gastritis and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. Cholesteryl-α-glucosides have been identified as unique glycolipids present in H. pylori and some Helicobacter species. Cholesterol-α-glucosyltransferase (αCgT), a key enzyme for the biosynthesis of cholesteryl-α-glucosides, plays crucial roles in the pathogenicity of H. pylori. Therefore, it is important to examine αCgTs of NHPHs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six gastric NHPHs were isolated from Japanese patients and maintaine

UNLABELLED: Gastric cancer is the fifth most diagnosed cancer in the world. Infection by the bacteria Helicobacter pylori (HP) is associated with approximately 75% of gastric cancer cases. HP infection induces chronic gastric inflammation, damaging the stomach and fostering carcinogenesis. Most mechanistic studies on gastric cancer initiation are performed in mice and utilize either mouse-adapted strains of HP or the natural mouse pathogen Helicobacter felis (HF). Here, we identified the differences in gastric inflammation, atrophy, and metaplasia associated with HP and HF infection in mice. P

The genus Helicobacter is composed of bacteria that colonize both the human and animal gastrointestinal tract. Helicobacter pylori infects half of the world's population, causing various disorders, such as gastritis, duodenitis and gastric cancer. Additionally, non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter species (NHPH) are commonly found in the stomach of pigs, dogs and cats. Most of these species have zoonotic potential and prevalence rates of 0.2-6.0%, and have been described in human patients suffering from gastric disorders undergoing a gastric biopsy. The aim of this study was to determine the o

Helicobacter hepaticus was discovered in 1992 as a cause of liver cancer in the A/JCr mouse model. In susceptible mice, infection by H. hepaticus causes chronic gastrointestinal inflammation leading to neoplasia. It can also cause morphological changes in breast-glands leading to neoplasm and adenocarcinoma in mouse models. Studies performed on humans have revealed that H. hepaticus may also be a human pathogen since infection by H. hepaticus can be associated with cholecystitis, cholelithiasis and gallbladder cancer. H. hepaticus is a close relative of H. pylori, but it lacks the major virule

The aims of the study were to evaluate the incidence of Helicobacter pylori and Helicobacter heilmannii in untreated Bulgarian children from 1996 to 2006, to analyse the performance of diagnostic tests, and to look at H. pylori density in specimens by culture. Antral specimens from children with chronic gastritis (n=513), peptic ulcers (n=54) and other diseases (n=91) were evaluated by direct Gram staining (DGS), in-house rapid urease test (RUT) and culture. The living environment and semi-quantitative H. pylori density were assessed in 188 and 328 children, respectively. H. pylori infection w

AIM: The premier platinum Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) stool antigen (HpSA) test is an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) that detects an H pylori antigen present in human stools. However, at present there is no uniformity about the cut off level required to consider the test as positive or negative. So we need the cut off level for our local population. The aim of this study was to evaluate the HpSA for the detection of H pylori infection in dyspeptic patients and to determine the sensitivity, specificity of the HpSA test in the diagnosis of H pylori infection, as compared to other standardized diagn

The infection caused by Helicobacter pylori is the most common on the planet, affecting half of the global population. It is usually transmitted during childhood and persists for life if untreated. It is the primary cause of chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, and gastric cancer. In young dyspeptic patients without alarm symptoms, the test-and-treat strategy (detection of H. pylori through a non-invasive test and subsequent eradication) is the preferred approach. The causal role of the infection in the development of gastric adenocarcinoma provides an opportunity to implement preventive strategie

Helicobacter pylori infection exhibits a wide disease spectrum ranging from asymptomatic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, to gastric cancer. H. pylori can induce dysbiosis of gastric microbiota in the pathway of carcinogenesis and successful eradication can restore gastric homeostasis. Diagnostic testing and treatment for H. pylori infection is recommended in patients with active or past history of peptic ulcer, chronic dyspepsia, chronic non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) or aspirin use, precancerous gastric lesions, gastric cancer, mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma

Since the description of Helicobacter pylori (HP) as the most common cause of gastritis and its neoplastic complications, numerous articles have been written about the epidemiology, clinical features, diagnostic methods, histopathology, pathogenesis, molecular biology and treatment of this infection. This review focuses on those aspects of the infection that challenge the universality of the medical implications through the lens of evolutionary science applied to medicine. The divergent epidemiological and clinical outcomes observed in different populations and the possible beneficial aspects
