Intestinal helminths of cats in the Kainji Lake area, Nigeria.

Six parasitic helminths detected were Ancylostoma sp., Opisthorchis felineus, Toxocara mystrax, Hepaticola hepatica, Taenia sp. and Hydatigera taeniaeformis. The prevalence of H. hepatica, T. mystrax and H. taeniaeformis is associated with rodents hunted by cats, and that of O. felineus with fish fed to cats. The role of cats as primary host and reservoir for these helminths, which could be of zoonotic importance, is briefly mentioned.

[Parasite fauna of red foxes in Berlin (West)].

The infestation with ecto- and endoparasites of red foxes in Berlin (West) was investigated. As shown by post mortems of 100 animals (47 males and 53 females), none of them was found to be free of parasites. With regard to ectoparasites, 3 species of ixodes ticks, 7 flea species, one species of biting lice and mite species were demonstrated. The sarcoptic mange is often inducing the death of the foxes and is considered to be a limiting factor of the population increment. Concerning endoparasites, cestodes (6 species), trematodes (7 species), nematodes (10 species) and 3 coccidian species were

Survey of hepatic and pulmonary helminths of wild cervids in Alberta, Canada.

During the 1988 hunting season, livers and lungs from 263 mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus hemionus), 198 moose (Alces alces), 147 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), and 94 wapiti (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) from Alberta (Canada) were collected for parasitological examination. Most of the samples (89%) were submitted by big game hunters throughout the province. Giant liver fluke (Fascioloides magna) was found in 9% of 22 yearling and 29% of 65 adult wapiti; 4% of 161 adult moose; and 2% of 97 adult white-tailed deer. The intensity of infection generally was low; however, one wapiti had ove

Excretory-secretory products from adult helminth Nippostrongylus brasiliensis have in vitro bactericidal activity.

Introduction. Intestinal helminths and microbiota share the same anatomical niche during infection and are likely to interact either directly or indirectly. Whether intestinal helminths employ bactericidal strategies that influence their microbial environment is not completely understood.Hypothesis. In the present study, the hypothesis that the adult hookworm Nippostrongylus brasiliensis produces molecules that impair bacterial growth in vitro, is tested.Aim. To investigate the in vitro bactericidal activity of Nippostrongylus brasiliensis against commensal and pathogenic bacteria.Methodology.

Artemisinin and its derivatives in treating helminthic infections beyond schistosomiasis.

The World Health Organization estimated that more than 1.5 billion people are infected with soil-transmitted helminths globally, and foodborne trematodiases in humans cause ∼2 million life-years lost to disability and death worldwide every year. Investment in prevention, treatment, and awareness of helminth infections and discovery of new, safe, effective, and affordable anti-helminth drugs are urgently needed. Artemisinin (ART) and its derivatives have been widely used to treat malaria and other protozoan infections; they also possess activities against helminths. So far, many papers on ART a

[Human helminthiasis transmitted by fishes].

The consumption of dishes made from raw fresh- or see-water fishes exposes many individuals (residents, visitors or migrants) from tropical to arctic regions to the risk of helminthiasis. Anisakiasis, diphyllobothriasis, clonorchiasis, opistorchiasis and gnathostomiasis have distinct parasitic cycles and various clinical presentations, from sub-clinical infections to life-threatening hemorragic or tumoral complications. In-depth history, clinical presentation, stool examination for ova and parasites and serology usually allow for a specific diagnosis to be made. The common anti-parasitic drugs

Helminth parasite spectrum in fish in Bangladesh: A systematic review.

Bangladesh, one of the top fish-producing countries in South Asia, has made significant progress in inland and marine fisheries and aquaculture in recent years. Parasitic infections in fish remain a major challenge and a threat to fish abundance and biodiversity. Fishes are affected by both external and internal parasites, with helminths being the most common. These parasites can affect fish growth, survival, and marketability and can pose a risk of fish-borne zoonosis. In recent years, global concern about food safety and security has remained high. Bangladesh is expanding its global fish and

Temporal variation in helminth infracommunities of the Gafftopsail pompano, Trachinotus rhodopus (Pisces: Carangidae) off the Pacific coast of Mexico.

Temporal variation of the helminth infracommunity structure in the Gafftopsail pompano Trachinotus rhodopus was studied during bi-monthly revisions of samples collected offshore from Puerto Ángel, Oaxaca (Mexican Pacific) in 2018. In total, 110 specimens of T. rhodopus were subjected to a parasitic review. Helminths found were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level (six species and three genera) by means of morphological and molecular data. Attributes of the helminth infracommunities are described through statistical analyses, showing stability in terms of their richness throughout

Zoonotic helminths - why the challenge remains.

Helminth zoonoses remain a global problem to public health and the economy of many countries. Polymerase chain reaction-based techniques and sequencing have resolved many taxonomic issues and are now essential to understanding the epidemiology of helminth zoonotic infections and the ecology of the causative agents. This is clearly demonstrated from research on Echinococcus (echinococcosis) and Trichinella (trichinosis). Unfortunately, a variety of anthropogenic factors are worsening the problems caused by helminth zoonoses. These include cultural factors, urbanization and climate change. Wildl

Atypical parasitic lesions in slaughtered cattle in Southern Brazil.

In this study, we described the morphological features and unusual presentations of hydatidosis, fasciolosis, and eosinophilic myositis caused by Sarcocystis species diagnosed at the slaughterhouse lines. Twenty-seven samples of atypical parasitic lesions from distinct cattle were evaluated, of which 12 corresponded to hydatidosis, 11 to fasciolosis, and 4 to eosinophilic sarcocystosis. Hydatid cysts were observed mainly in the heart, with all cases involving the left ventricle. Fasciolosis lesions involved mainly the lungs, and were characterized by a focal nodular elevated area involving the

The immune response to parasitic helminths of veterinary importance and its potential manipulation for future vaccine control strategies.

Despite the increasing knowledge of the immunobiology and epidemiology of parasitic helminths of the gastrointestinal system and the cardiorespiratory system, complications arising from infections of animals and humans with these parasites are a major clinical and economic problem. This has been attributed to the high incidence of these parasites, the widespread emergence of multi-drug resistant parasite strains and the lack of effective vaccines. Efforts to develop and produce vaccines against virtually all helminths (with the exception of Dictyocaulus viviparus and some cestode species) have
