Retrograde cement extrusion into the nutrient vessels of the femur is a rare phenomenon in uncomplicated cemented hemiarthroplasty of the hip; this is a report on three cases. Routine postoperative radiographs showed a continuous dense linear opacity arising from the posterior medial region of the femur. Computed tomography (CT) scans revealed no evidence of a cortical break in the femur and confirmed our suspicion of retrograde cement extrusion into the nutrient vessels of the femur. Post-operative recovery was uneventful with no complications of cement thromboembolism. Our findings in three

The purpose of this study was to review the outcome of patients with osteonecrosis of the humeral head, based on etiology and treatment with either hemiarthroplasty or total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA). Sixty-four shoulders, with an average age of 57 years, were evaluated at a mean of 4.8 years. Outcomes included L'Insalata and American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) scores, as well as range of motion (ROM). The overall ASES score was 67, average flexion was 127 degrees, and external rotation was 49 degrees. Outcomes did not differ based on etiology, but ROM was decreased with post-traumat

Malnutrition in patients who had surgery leads to the risk of postoperative complications, especially impaired wound healing. Preoperative serum zinc levels and other nutritional parameters were analyzed to establish criteria that would enable delayed healing to be predicted. A prospective study of 97 patients who had hemiarthroplasty for hip fracture is reported. Univariate analysis established the relationship between serum zinc, nutritional parameters, and other demographic variables with delayed healing. Significant variables were included in a multivariate analysis. Univariate and multiva

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have been unable to confirm a direct relationship between polymethylmethacrylate use and cancer risk in hemiarthroplasty (HA) due to a lack of differentiation between cemented and cementless fixation in cancer risk assessment. This study aimed to clarify this by examining the incidence of cancer in patients who underwent cemented HA compared to those who received cementless HA.
METHODS: This study was a retrospective nationwide cohort study using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database, which represents nearly the entire Republic of Korea (South Kore

RATIONALE: Hip fractures affect over 10 million people annually worldwide and are expected to increase with an ageing population, contributing significantly to morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Hemiarthroplasty, a common treatment for displaced femoral neck fractures, accounts for more than half of hip fracture surgeries in older adults. However, the optimal surgical approach - anterior, lateral, or posterior - remains uncertain, with decisions often based on surgeon preference or institutional protocols.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of different surgical approaches for hemiart

Hip bipolar hemiarthroplasty, a widely employed surgical intervention for managing hip fractures and degenerative hip diseases, can pose significant challenges when revisions become necessary due to complications such as implant loosening, instability, or breakage. This case report presents the intricate management of a 58-year-old male who presented with worsening left hip pain a decade after undergoing hip replacement surgery. Despite a thorough preoperative assessment ruling out infection, intraoperative complexities included the necessity for extended trochanteric osteotomy (ETO) to addres

BACKGROUND: Glenoid bone loss in shoulder arthroplasty is a difficult problem that is prone to complications because of challenges with achieving glenoid component fixation and stability. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of primary shoulder hemiarthroplasty for patients with severe glenoid medialization precluding placement of a glenoid component.
METHODS: This was a retrospective case series evaluating patients who underwent shoulder hemiarthroplasty for severe glenoid erosion and medialization between 2010 and 2020. Patients were evaluated via chart review and phone su

Femoral neck fractures are one of the most common fractures treated by an Orthopaedic surgeon. Arthroplasty is the recommended management for intracapsular neck of femur fractures in the elderly population owing to the high risk of avascular necrosis of the femoral head following an internal fixation. Elderly patients with intracapsular fractures deemed high risk for anaesthesia (American Society of Anaesthesiology Grade more than 2) are recommended a hip hemiarthroplasty. Routine practice throughout the United Kingdom is to obtain a postoperative check radiograph for all hip hemiarthroplasty

BACKGROUND: The implantation rates of reverse total shoulder arthroplasties (RTSAs) are increasing worldwide, resulting in higher absolute numbers of the associated complications and revision surgeries. This requires the discussion of salvage therapies for failed RTSAs without revision to a new RTSA. Revision to hemiarthroplasty may offer a valid fallback option in certain cases. This study aimed to analyze the incidence, indications, and clinical outcomes, especially the reduction in pain levels compared to a matched control group.
METHODS: Our prospectively enrolled patient cohort of RTSA i

OBJECTIVES: Management of unstable intertrochanteric fractures is challenging, especially in patients with osteoporosis. Comminuted unstable intertrochanteric fractures require postoperative immobilization. Several recent reports have recommended hemiarthroplasty for treatment of unstable intertrochanteric fractures to avoid various immobilization-associated complications. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the functional and clinical outcomes of bipolar hemiarthroplasty for unstable intertrochanteric fractures in older persons.
METHODS: Sixty patients aged over 75 years underwent hemi

BACKGROUND: Arthroplasty is the standard of care for elderly patients with displaced femoral neck fractures, with viable options including hemiarthroplasty (HA) and total hip arthroplasty (THA). With time, HA may need to be converted to THA, but it is unclear whether this is more similar to primary or revision THA. We compare complication and revision rates between these groups within 90 days and 2 years postoperatively.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 3 cohorts of patients treated at our institution: primary, conversion, and revision THA. Outcomes studied included intraoperative data, p

Osteogenesis imperfecta is a rare genetic disorder that presents with heterogeneous phenotypes ranging from brittle bones to impaired hearing. Because of the decreased bone mineral density frequently observed in this patient population, many patients experience recurring and long-term fractures, which often require orthopaedic management. With the advancement of nonsurgical and surgical management and increased longevity of patients with osteogenesis imperfecta, the incidence of osteoarthritis has risen, presenting new orthopaedic challenges. However, compromised bone integrity and size combin

In comparison to aseptic osteonecrosis of the femoral head, the occurrence of aseptic acetabular osteonecrosis is extremely rare. This article reports the case of a 77-year-old woman with a large defect of the posterior acetabular wall (type 3 AAOS/D'Antonio score). We present an option for treatment in cases of a combination of osteonecrosis with implanted bipolar hemiarthroplasty.
