Global DNA Barcoding of Sigara (Hemiptera: Corixidae) Reveals Cryptic Species Formation and Climatic-Niche Divergence.

The genus Sigara Fabricius, 1775 (Hemiptera: Corixidae) is an important freshwater bioindicator, but its conservative morphology complicates traditional species identification. This study combines DNA barcoding, traditional taxonomy, and climatic factors within an integrative framework to provide new insights into species delimitation. We analyzed cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences from 501 Sigara specimens collected from 15 countries, including 95 newly generated COI barcodes. Our integrated approach included phylogenetic analyses, genetic distance assessments, and ecological nich

The complete mitochondrial genome of Acanthaspis geniculata (Hsiao, 1976) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) and its phylogenetic analyses.

The genus Acanthaspis (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) comprises predatory insects of ecological importance, yet mitochondrial genomic resources for this group remain limited. Here, we present the complete mitochondrial genome of Acanthaspis geniculata (Hsiao, 1976). The mitogenome is 16,226 bp in length and contains the standard set of 37 mitochondrial genes (13 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNA genes, and 22 tRNA genes), along with a control region (D-loop). The nucleotide composition is A (40.4%), T (29.6%), C (17.9%), and G (12.1%), with an overall AT content of 70.0%. Phylogenetic analyses based on par

Variability in Trypanosoma cruzi susceptibility among species of kissing bugs (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) in Mexico.

Chagas disease, caused by the kinetoplastid Trypanosoma cruzi (Chagas, 1909), and transmitted by triatomine bugs, poses a significant public health challenge. Variability in the susceptibility of different triatomine species to T. cruzi infection can profoundly influence disease transmission dynamics and control measures. In this study, we assessed the susceptibility to T. cruzi infection in the first and third nymphal stages across eight triatomine species to T. cruzi infection using experimental inoculation with the NINOA strain and optical microscopy. The evaluated species were Dipetalogast

Wing expansion functional analysis of ion transport peptide gene in Sogatella furcifera (Horváth) (Hemiptera: Delphacidae).

Ion transport peptide (ITP), a superfamily of arthropod neuropeptides, serves a crucial role in regulating various physiological processes such as diuresis, ecdysis behavior, and wing expansion. However, the molecular characteristics, expression profile, and role of ITP in Sogatella furcifera are poorly understood. To elucidate the characteristics and biological function of ITP in S. furcifera, we employed reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and RNA interference (RNAi) methods. The identified SfITP gene encodes 117 amino acids. The expression of SfITP gradually increased f

Revision of Mesojassus Tillyard, 1916, from the Late Triassic of Queensland (Hemiptera: Cicadomorpha: Membracoidea: Archijassidae).

New specimens and a re-examination of their holotypes have clarified the status of six nominal species of the extinct membracoid family Archijassidae from the Late Triassic (Norian) fossil insect localities at Mount Crosby, Denmark Hill and Dinmore in south-eastern Queensland. The 57 available tegmina ostensibly attributable to one or other of the six species are remarkably similar in venation and only vary in size and to a lesser extent in shape. The latter character varies subtlety across a continuum and is of no use in species definition. The tegmina, however, fall into two distinct size gr

A sequential binomial sampling plan for potato psyllid (Hemiptera: Triozidae) on bell pepper (Capsicum annum).

BACKGROUND: Potato psyllids (Bactericera cockerelli Sulc) are a pest on solanaceous crop plants, including bell peppers. Potato psyllids vector Candidatus Liberibacter psyllaurous, but bell peppers (Capsicum annum L.) do not exhibit symptoms from infection. Potato psyllids show variation in spatial patterns and host choice with cultivar and plant species. Consequently, a study of spatial distribution and sampling plan specific to bell peppers is necessary for management of this insect pest, as those developed for other crops are unlikely to transfer among crops. RESULTS: Potato psyllids were

First Record of Cinara tujafilina (Hemiptera: Aphididae) in Myanmar Based on Morphological and Molecular Evidence.

The cypress pine aphid, Cinara (Cupressobium) tujafilina (Del Guercio, 1909), is a widely distributed aphid associated with Cupressaceae and known for forming dense colonies that promote sooty mold development and reduce host vigour. Here, we report the first confirmed occurrence of this species in Myanmar. Specimens collected from Platycladus orientalis were identified using morphological characters and mitochondrial COI sequences. Genetic analyses revealed low intraspecific divergence and a clear barcode gap relative to closely related species, supporting accurate species identification. Hap

The life history and mosquito consumption dynamics of Notonecta indica (Hemiptera: Notonectidae) in eastern Jamaica.

Certain mosquito species pose a significant threat to human health, causing thousands of deaths annually via diseases such as yellow fever, dengue fever, and chikungunya. A variety of insects, including dragonflies and backswimmers, prey on mosquito larvae, providing natural population suppression, but knowledge of the life history and quantification of the mosquito suppression dynamics of these insects remain limited in the Caribbean. In the present study, we documented aspects of the life history of the backswimmer Notonecta indica L. in Jamaica and quantified its consumption of Aedes aegypt

Evaluation of the insecticide susceptibility profile in Cimex lectularius (Hemiptera: Cimicidae) in Belo Horizonte (Brazil).

INTRODUCTION: Since 2013, major Cimex lectularius infestations have been detected in public shelters in Belo Horizonte (Brazil). Due to this, insecticide resistance has been investigated as one of the possible causes for the failure to control bedbugs. METHODS: Cimicids were subjected to bioassays according to the World Health Organization recommendations using deltamethrin and all commercial insecticides available for control of Cimex in Brazil. RESULTS: Cimicids were deltamethrin resistant and presented indicative of resistance to other insecticides, except for propoxur 1%. CONCLUSIONS: T

A review of neococcid scale insects (Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha: Coccomorpha) based on the morphology of the adult males.

The importance of adult male morphology in elucidating the phylogeny of scale insects (Coccomorpha) was first suggested by Balachowsky and Ferris in the late 1930s. However, the first extensive comparisons of adult male morphology were made by Jancke (1955) and Theron (1958), both of whom looked at the morphology of various groups of Coccomorpha. Theron's study, under the guidance of K.L. Boratyński, set a new standard for detail and accuracy (although he did not describe the setae). These studies were closely followed by Beardsley (1962), who described the adult males of 30 mealybug species f

Structure and function of the stylets of hematophagous Triatominae (Hemiptera: Reduviidae), with special reference to Dipetalogaster maxima.

Kissing bugs (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) are able to bend their rod-like maxillae while searching for blood vessels in the tissue of their vertebrate hosts. Little is known about the working mechanisms of these bending movements and the distal opening of the food channel. We compared the morphological structure of the stylets (mandibles and maxillae) of four triatomine species and analyzed the feeding process of Dipetalogaster maxima (Uhler, 1894). The maxillae of triatomine bugs are interlocked by a tongue-and-groove system, allowing longitudinal sliding. While penetrating the host t

Sensory Receptors Associated with the Labial Tip and Precibarium of Philaenus spumarius L. (Hemiptera: Aphrophoride).

The meadow spittlebug, Philaenus spumarius (Linnaeus) (Hemiptera: Aphrophoridae), is an important vector for the xylem-limited bacterium Xylella fastidiosa (Wells, Raju, Hung, Weisburg, Mandelco-Paul, and Brenner), which is associated with olive quick decline syndrome in southern Italy. The mouthparts of Hemiptera have important roles in host plant selection, feeding behavior and for vectoring pathogens that cause plant diseases. In this study, the functional morphology of the sensory structures located on the labium tip and precibarium of P. spumarius was investigated using scanning and trans

Triatoma vitticeps (Stal, 1859) (Hemiptera, Triatominae): A Chagas Disease Vector or a Complex of Vectors?

Triatoma vitticeps is a Chagas disease vector that was found infected with Trypanosoma cruzi in homes. As this species is endemic from Brazil (Bahia, Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, and Rio de Janeiro) and no study comparing the specimens from different Brazilian states was conducted, we analyzed the genetic distance (16S rDNA, Cyt b, and COI mitochondrial genes) and the chromosomal characteristics for T. vitticeps from Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, and Espírito Santo. All specimens showed the same cytogenetic characteristics. On the other hand, the different mitochondrial genes demonstrated hig

Melt With This Kiss: Paralyzing and Liquefying Venom of The Assassin Bug Pristhesancus plagipennis (Hemiptera: Reduviidae).

Assassin bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Reduviidae) are venomous insects, most of which prey on invertebrates. Assassin bug venom has features in common with venoms from other animals, such as paralyzing and lethal activity when injected, and a molecular composition that includes disulfide-rich peptide neurotoxins. Uniquely, this venom also has strong liquefying activity that has been hypothesized to facilitate feeding through the narrow channel of the proboscis-a structure inherited from sap- and phloem-feeding phytophagous hemipterans and adapted during the evolution of Heteroptera into a fan
