BACKGROUND: Both targetoid hemosiderotic hemangiomas (THH) and solitary angiokeratomas (SAK) are acquired vascular malformations formed by superficial vascular ectasias possibly caused by trauma.
OBJECTIVE: We compare the clinicopathologic findings of THHs with those of SAKs and report the clinicopathologic findings of 3 singular cases of THH affected by cyclic or episodic morphologic changes.
METHODS: We performed a clinicopathologic study on 33 cases of THH and compared this group with 20 cases of SAK. On selected cases, histochemical and immunohistochemical analyses were evaluated.

Superficial siderosis of the central nervous system is a chronic condition characterized by hemosiderin deposition in the brain and spinal cord. It's diagnosed by brain MRI. It can be caused by low-grade extravasation of blood into the subarachnoid space of the brain. There are 2 types of superficial siderosis cortical and infratentorial. Although asymptomatic in many cases; Cerebellar-predominant siderosis, a subtype of infratentorial, can affect hearing, gait, and even muscles. In this report, we present a case of a 51-year old female with complaints of hearing loss, unsteadiness in his lowe

In France, cocaine is the second most commonly illicit drug used after cannabis. Cocaine, mainly smoked in the form of crack, can be responsible for a wide range of respiratory disorders. The aim of this systematic literature review was to clarify what is known about the link between cocaine use and alveolar hemorrhage. We performed a Medline search covering the period 1980-2016 and collected data from 84 articles. The number of acute forms described in the literature is small but postmortem studies show that hidden forms are frequent. The diagnosis is based on the association of hemoptysis, a

The authors report a case of an 81-year-old woman affected by a synovial cyst arising from the left facet joint of L3. The patient presented with severe pain and claudicatio spinalis. Diagnosis was based upon standard x-rays and MRI; the patient was operated on and the histology of the lesion confirmed the pre-operative diagnosis. On MRI images the lesion appeared as a roundish extradural mass arising from the left facet joint of L3, compressing the cauda equina posteriorly, and it appeared with an increased heterogeneous signal, consistent with a high quantity of fluid and hemosiderin within

Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is a rare clonal disorder of hematopoietic stem cells characterized by complement-mediated intravascular hemolysis. Renal involvement, though often subclinical, can occasionally present as acute kidney injury (AKI). We report a case of a 24-year-old female who presented with AKI without any clinical or laboratory evidence of hemolysis. Kidney biopsy revealed acute tubular necrosis with hemosiderin deposition, suggestive of chronic hemolysis. The patient recovered with supportive care, and a diagnosis of PNH was not confirmed until 6 years later, follow

Superficial siderosis is a disease in which hemosiderin is deposited under the leptomeninges and subpial layers of hindbrain structures, e.g., the cerebellum, brainstem, and eighth cranial nerve. The main symptoms of superficial siderosis are cerebellar ataxia, hearing loss, cognitive decline, and myelopathy. The activities of daily living of patients with superficial siderosis are severely impaired due to the progressive symptoms. Here, we report a patient with superficial siderosis whose symptoms deteriorated after lumbar subarachnoid-peritoneal (L-P) shunt surgery. She received L-P shunt su

We characterized the pathologic changes in 50 spleens from patients with autoimmune hemolytic anemia and in 13 spleens from patients with congenital hemolytic anemia. The major pathologic findings in autoimmune hemolytic anemia were mild to pronounced cord congestion and variable white pulp area, erythrophagocytosis in conjunction with an increased polymorphonuclear neutrophil reaction, and increased deposition of hemosiderin and extramedullary hematopoiesis. In contrast, both the severity and the frequency of polymorphonuclear neutrophil reactions, deposition of hemosiderin, and extramedullar

INTRODUCTION: Superficial siderosis is a rare, neurodegenerative disease caused by toxic accumulation of hemosiderin on the surface of the brain and the spinal cord, most commonly from chronic subarachnoid hemorrhage.
AIMS: The aim of this study was to assess the clinical and radiological outcomes of superficial siderosis patients using deferiprone, a cell permeant iron chelator. Subjects obtained pre- and post-treatment brain MRIs and weekly laboratory tests. Osirix software was used to develop a method of quantifying hemosiderin deposition. Three-dimensional whole brain images of gradient e

Testicular regression syndrome (TRS) represents a congenital condition in which no normal testicular tissue can be identified following exploration for a clinically impalpable testis. A spectrum of pathological findings may be present but there is little literature systematically examining these features. We searched a pediatric histopathology database to identify cases of TRS, and the histopathological findings were reviewed and pooled with those of all previously published smaller series. A total of 117 cases were identified during the period (1989-2004), median age 2 (range birth-12) years.

Superficial siderosis of the central nervous system is a very rare disease related to hemosiderin deposits in the brain, brainstem, cerebellum and spinal cord due to chronic subarachnoid hemorrhage. Chronic increased intracranial pressure develops in about one-third of affected cases. We report a patient with superficial siderosis and sudden intracranial pressure crisis. A 29-year-old man experienced a subacute episode of headache, tinnitus and blurred vision. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed hemosiderin deposits characteristic of superficial siderosis. Extensive diagnostic wor

There are a few studies that have focused on histopathologic findings in interval appendectomies compared to acute appendicitis and negative appendectomies. Our aim is to compare histopathologic features in interval appendectomies to a similar control group of stump appendectomies. A retrospective review study was conducted over a 10-year period. We found 21 (0.3 %) patients [age range: 10-70 years, average age: 40 years, male to female ratio: 1.3 to 1.0, average time interval: 6 weeks] who had interval appendectomies. Seventeen patients (81 %) showed three main patterns: xanthogranulomatous i

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common cause of morbidity and mortality in captive wildlife species. However, CKD has been rarely documented in giant pandas.
CASE PRESENTATION: The following report describes a case of an eight-year-old female giant panda showing clinical signs of epistaxis, bloody diarrhea, polyuria, azotemia and anemia. The animal died despite of supportive treatments. Necropsy was performed. Grossly, both kidneys were shrunken and scarred with pallor. Subcutis edema and petechia on the epicardium of the heart were observed. The tissue samples were made into pa

QUESTION: We report the case of a 38y old woman who consulted for chronic diffuse abdominal pain related to previous irritable bowel syndrome diagnosis. Physical examination showed nonblanching reddish hyperpigmented reticular peri-umbilical skin patch (figure 1). What's your diagnosis?
ANSWER: The diagnosis of erythema ab igne was made. Additional investigations confirmed repeated use of hot water bottles applied on abdominal wall for 3 weeks overnight for pain relief. Erythema ab igne is a pathognomonic cutaneous presentation of long-lasting exposure to heat sources (1). The pathophysiology

BACKGROUND: Superficial hemosiderosis (SS) of the central nervous system is a rare condition that is caused by chronic, repeated hemorrhage into the subarachnoid space. The subsequent deposition of hemosiderin in the brain and spinal cord causes neurological deterioration. In this report, the authors describe a repair procedure for SS associated with a dural defect in the thoracic spine.
OBSERVATIONS: A 75-year-old man presented with tinnitus symptoms that began about 1 year prior. Subsequently, his hearing loss progressed, and he gradually became unsteady on walking. Magnetic resonance imagi

Sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic yield of the superficial peroneal nerve (SPN)/peroneus brevis muscle (PBM) biopsy in 43 patients with clinically suspected vasculitic neuropathy was studied. Biopsies were classified as "definite", "suspicious" or "possible" in accordance with established criteria. Vasculitis was detected in 27 patients (21 with non-systemic vasculitis, and six with systemic vasculitis). In patients with "definite" vasculitis (n=13), the sensitivity of SPN/PBM biopsy was 76.4% with 100% specificity. By including patients suspicious for vasculitis (n=10), sensitivity inc

Superficial siderosis (SS) of the central nervous system is a rare condition in which hemosiderin is deposited in the subpial layer of the brain and/or spinal cord. It is supposed that hemosiderin deposition is a result of recurrent or persistent hemorrhage in the subarachnoid space. The causes of hemorrhage are tumor, vascular abnormality, injury, dural defect, and others. The source of hemorrhage is not apparent despite of extensive examinations in about a half of the patients with SS. Patients with SS usually reveal slowly progressive and irreversible cerebellar ataxia and/or sensorineural

BACKGROUND: Superficial siderosis of the central nervous system is a rare syndrome notable for the presence of hemosiderin deposition due to chronic, repetitive hemorrhages into the subarachnoid space.
OBSERVATIONS: The authors presented a case of superficial siderosis in a 14-year-old girl. It arose as a late postoperative complication after resection of a medulloblastoma. Despite the patient being asymptomatic, surveillance imaging demonstrated diffuse hemosiderin deposition within the cerebellar folia and cisternal segments of cranial nerves VII and VIII on gradient echo (GRE) sequences. Superficial siderosis is a rare disease resulting from the deposited hemosiderin owing to repeated subarachnoid hemorrhage. It has been reported that hemosiderin deposits on the brain surface and brain parenchyma causes nerve disorder, resulting in progressive and irreversible hearing loss, cerebellar ataxia and pyramidal disorder. The brain tumor is one of the cause of superficial siderosis. A 16-year-old female present a nearby hospital with complaints of absence seizure. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a heterogeneously enhanced mass at the right temporal lobe. Susceptibility-we

In superficial CNS siderosis chronic subarachnoidal hemorrhage leads to hemosiderin deposits in the subpial layers of the brain and spinal cord. Many years usually pass between the initial event causing chronic bleedings and the development of cerebellar ataxia, sensory hearing loss and various sensorimotor deficits. The only therapeutic option is to identify and eliminate the bleeding source. Otherwise slow relentless decline to a bedridden state and dementia is usually unavoidable. However, it is not known how precisely leptomeningeal hemosiderin deposits induce progressive neurodegeneration
