Viral infections affecting the liver have had an important impact on humanity, as they have led to significant morbidity and mortality in patients with acute and chronic infections. Once an unknown etiology, the discovery of the viral agents triggered interest of the scientific community to establish the pathogenesis and diagnostic modalities to identify the affected population. With the rapid scientific and technological advances in the last centuries, controlling and even curing the infections became a possibility, with a large focus on preventive medicine through vaccination. Hence, a compr

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) and hepatitis E virus (HEV) cause acute, self-limiting hepatic infections that are usually spread by the fecal-oral route in humans. Naturally occurring and experimental infections are possible in a variety of nonhuman primates and, in the case of HEV, a number of other species. Many advances in understanding the pathogenesis of these viruses have come from studies in experimental animals. In general, animals infected with these viruses recapitulate the histologic lesions seen in infected humans, but typically with less severe clinical and histopathological manifestatio

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection may cause acute hepatitis and lead to hepatic failure in developing and developed countries. We studied HEV seroprevalences in patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection to understand the consequences of HEV superinfection in a Vietnamese population. This cross-sectional study was conducted from 2012 to 2013 and included 1318 Vietnamese patients with HBV-related liver diseases and 340 healthy controls. The case group included patients with acute (n = 26) and chronic hepatitis B (n = 744), liver cirrhosis (n = 160), hepatocellular carcinoma (n = 166) and p

HBeAg and anti-HBe were determined by radioimmunoassay (Abbott HBe) in serial serum samples from 22 patients who had been HBsAg-positive for more than 1 year. Seventeen patients (77%) were HBeAg-positive at onset of illness. Eight of these patients were persistently HBeAg-positive during 2.5-8.5 years' follow-up study (mean, 5.4 years). Chronic persistent hepatitis (CPH) developed in one of these patients and chronic active hepatitis (CAH) in seven patients. Nine persistently HBsAg-positive patients were transiently HBeAg-positive. Seven of these patients developed CPH, and they all lost HBeAg

Acute hepatitis can be caused by a number of viruses, especially A, B, C, E, delta, Epstein-Barr virus, and cytomegalovirus. Hepatitis A and B have been discussed previously in this series. The virus responsible for most cases of what commonly has been referred to as non-A non-B hepatitis has been tracked, and antibodies to certain proteins of this virus have been identified. This virus is now referred to as hepatitis C. The possible clinical outcomes after acute hepatitis C virus infection are similar to those for hepatitis B virus infection, except that hepatitis C is far more likely to beco

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is one of the enterically transmitted types of hepatitis. The present study was undertaken to estimate the occurrence of HEV infection in sporadic acute hepatitis in Thailand. Serum samples were obtained from 614 suspected acute hepatitis patients at two large hospitals in Bangkok during 2008, 2009, and 2011. Acute hepatitis E was identified by the presence of anti-HEV IgM (4.8%) using indirect ELISA kits and/or HEV RNA (4.5%) by a semi-nested reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction assay. HEV IgM was the most common marker for detection (77%) at diagn

The epidemiology and clinical manifestations of hepatitis E virus (HEV) and hepatitis A virus (HAV) are similar. However, two distinct diseases develop after exposure to each one of the viruses, which are apparently unrelated clinically. It is interesting to note that all reported epidemics and single cases of acute HEV infection indicate previous exposure to HAV. This fact leads us to hypothesize that acute HEV infection is dependent on past infection by hepatitis A virus, and that the sequential infections could not solely be explained on independent outbreaks. This hypothesis, where past HA

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The incidence of locally acquired hepatitis E has increased in recent years across Europe. There are only few data on hepatitis E in Romania. The purpose of our research was to describe and compare hepatitis E and hepatitis A in adult patients.
METHODS: We included all consecutive adult patients with hepatitis E and hepatitis A admitted to the Teaching Hospital of Infectious Diseases, Cluj-Napoca, Romania between January 2017 and August 2019.
RESULTS: Hepatitis E incidence increased in 2018-2019 compared to 2017. The average age in hepatitis E (n=48) patients was 50.6 ve

This comment discusses the critical public health challenge of hepatitis E in pregnancy and highlights the significant safety evidence gap for the HEV239 vaccine in this vulnerable group. Focusing on a landmark study from South Sudan by Nesbitt RC et al., we provide a critical appraisal of its findings, integrate them with prior evidence from clinical trials and animal studies, and discuss implications for vaccination policy in outbreak settings, particularly in fragile and conflict-affected contexts. The comment concludes that vaccination during pregnancy shows no detected increased risk of f

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) may induce acute self-limiting illnesses or persistent infections. Chronic hepatitis E frequently occurs in immunocompromised persons, including organ transplant recipients, HIV-positive patients, and those with hematological malignancies. It poses a risk of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis.
DATA SOURCES: Relevant articles published till September 2024 were located using PubMed searches. The further search terms utilized were: "immunocompromised", "solid organ transplant", "HIV", "hematological malignancy", and "hepatitis E virus". A manual search of references

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) belongs to the Hepeviridae family, Orthohepevirinae subfamily, Paslahepevirus genus which includes eight genotypes. HEV genotype 1 (HEV-1) and genotype 2 (HEV-2) are specific to humans, while genotype 3 (HEV-3) and genotype 4 (HEV-4) circulate mainly in pigs, wild boars and deer, but have also a zoonotic potential. HEV genotype 5 (HEV-5) and 6 (HEV-6) viruses circulate in wild boars in Japan and genotype 7 (HEV-7) and 8 (HEV-8) viruses circulate in camelids. The worldwide distribution of HEV is influenced by ecological and socioeconomic factors. In developing countries

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) predominantly causes acute liver disease in humans and is transmitted via the fecal-oral route. HEV infection in pregnant women can result in grave consequences, with up to 30% fatality. The HEV strains infecting humans mainly belong to four genotypes. Genotypes 1 and 2 are restricted to human infection, while genotypes 3 and 4 are zoonotic. HEV genotype 3 (HEV-3) can cause both acute and chronic liver disease. Several cell lines (mainly hepatocytes) have been developed for HEV propagation and biological study. However, HEV production in these cell lines is suboptimal a

Immunocompromised patients are at risk of chronic hepatitis E (HEV) infection. Recurrent T cell and borderline rejections in a pediatric patient with high HEV copy numbers led us to study HEV infection within renal transplants. To investigate the frequency of renal HEV infection in transplanted patients, 15 samples from patients with contemporaneous diagnoses of HEV infection were identified at our center. Ten samples had sufficient residual paraffin tissue for immunofluorescence (IF) and RNA-fluorescence-in-situ-hybridization (RNA-FISH). The biopsy of the pediatric index patient was additiona

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare autoimmune disorder of the peripheral nervous system that causes progressive weakness and sensory disturbances, usually following an infection or immunization. It has been associated with multiple causes, including bacterial and viral infections. Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a common cause of acute viral hepatitis that can rarely develop neurological complications. We report a case of a 72-year-old man who developed GBS secondary to an acute HEV infection. He presented with numbness and weakness of the lower limbs that rapidly evolved into respiratory fail

The incidence of hepatitis E continues to increase and in immunocompromised patients can lead to chronic infection. Management of hepatitis E has evolved over time, with the first step being a reduction of immunosuppression followed by treatment with ribavirin. The European Association for the Study of Liver guidelines support treatment with ribavirin although the optimum dose and regime is unknown. This series reviews eight chronically infected cases treated between 2018 and 2021 in two UK centres (Ipswich Hospital and Addenbrooke's Hospital). Treatment response was defined primarily as susta

Viral hepatitis remains a significant global health problem. All forms of viral hepatitis A through E (A-E) can lead to acute symptomatic infection, while hepatitis B and C can lead to chronic infection associated with significant morbidity and mortality related to progression to cirrhosis, end-stage-liver disease, and liver cancer. Viral hepatitis occurs worldwide, though certain regions are disproportionately affected. We now, remarkably, have highly effective curative regimens for hepatitis C, and safe and tolerable medications to suppress hepatitis B activity, and to prevent liver damage a

Hepatitis E (Hep E) is a type of liver disease caused by hepatitis E virus (HEV), which is a single-stranded ribonucleic acid (RNA) virus. This mainly spreads through the intake of contaminated food and water. Here we present a case of a 30-year-old male with complaints of dark-colored urine and yellow discoloration of eyes (jaundice) for the past few days. He also had associated mild abdominal pain, nausea, and loss of appetite. On further inquiry, he pointed out that his drinking water was from an unfiltered source, and had unsatisfactory sanitary conditions at home. On physical examination,
