Prevalence of Hepatitis A and E viruses in ready-to-eat foods: A meta-analysis.

The presence of Hepatitis A (HAV) and Hepatitis E (HEV) viruses in ready-to-eat foods (RTEFs) poses significant public health risk. The incidence of HEV in plant-based RTEFs particularly represents another emerging public health concern. There is a need for effective decontamination strategies to halt HAV and HEV exposure via RTEFs. The present study aimed at assessing the prevalence of foodborne HAV and HEV in RTEFs. A total of 2089 HAV/HEV-RTEFs related data from four integrated repositories was fitted to a mixed-effects model to estimate HAV and HEV prevalence. The prevalence of HEV in pork

Prevalence and risk factors for hepatitis B and C viruses in patients with leprosy.

It has been reported a higher seroprevalence of HBV and HCV in leprosy patients than in the general population, but the reasons for these findings are not yet clear. On the other hand, there is evidence that these viruses may influence the onset of leprosy reactional episodes, an important cause of neurological sequelae. This study aimed to determine seroprevalence and risk factors for HBV and HCV in leprosy patients and to investigate its association with leprosy reactions. Patients attended from 2015 to 2016 at a Reference Center in Leprosy in Northeastern region of Brazil, were interviewed,

[Prevalence of hepatitis B and C viruses in a chronic hemodialysis center in Dakar].

In endemic areas of hepatitis B and C, hemodialysis patients are highly exposed to these infections. So the authors studied the prevalence of hepatitis B and C viruses among chronic hemodialysis patients of CHU A. Le Dantec of Dakar in a cross study carried out from June 1996 to June 1997, in order to identify risk factors and suggest appropriate prophylaxis. The study concerned fifteen chronic hemodialysis patients in an unit of hemodialysis in Dakar. For each patient, clinical and biochemical data were collected serological markers of B and C viruses were tested and HCV-RNA in case of seropo

Screening for retroviruses and hepatitis viruses using dried blood spots reveals a high prevalence of occult hepatitis B in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Recent advances in antiviral therapy show potential for a cure and/or control of most human infections caused by hepatitis viruses and retroviruses. However, medical success is largely dependent on the identification of the large number of people unaware of these infections, especially in developing countries. Dried blood spots (DBS) have been demonstrated to be a good tool for collecting, storing and transporting clinical specimens from rural areas and limited-resource settings to laboratory facilities, where viral infections can be more reliably diagnosed. METHODS: The seropreva

Virologic and clinical expressions of reciprocal inhibitory effect of hepatitis B, C, and delta viruses in patients with chronic hepatitis.

We studied 648 hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)- and/or anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV)-positive patients to evaluate the virologic and clinical characteristics of multiple hepatitis viral infection. We defined as Case B-C an HBsAg/anti-HCV positive patient and as Case b-C an anti-HCV/anti-HBc-positive, HBsAg/anti-HBs-negative patient. For each Case B-C we scheduled as Control-B an HBsAg positive and anti-HCV negative patient and as Control-C an HBsAg/anti-HBs/anti-hepatitis B core antigen (HBc)-negative and anti-HCV-positive patient. Control group C was used as the control also for Case group

Transmission of hepatitis B and hepatitis delta viruses in the households of chronic hepatitis B surface antigen carriers: a regression analysis of indicators of risk.

To evaluate whether clinical and laboratory features of a hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) carrier can predict risks of infection, its chronicity, and the development of liver disease among close contacts, the authors studied a cohort of 994 first degree relatives or cohabitants (household contacts) of 226 non-drug-addicted chronic HBsAg carriers (index cases), of whom 77% had liver disease and 26% were superinfected by hepatitis D virus (HDV). A logistic form of regression analysis was used to assess the role of each feature in the index case as predictor of hepatitis B virus (HBV)- and HD

Hepatitis B, C, and E viruses in solid organ transplantation: donor and recipient perspectives.

Solid organ transplantation (SOT) presents a unique intersection of life-saving opportunity and infectious risk. This review examines the implications of hepatitis B, C, and E from both donor and recipient perspectives and provides updated evidence-based management strategies. Advances in antiviral therapies have enabled the safe utilization of HBV- and HCV- infected donors, which can expand the donor pool without compromising recipient outcomes. For HBV, nucleos(t)ide analogs provide effective prophylaxis and treatment, and emerging data support using HBsAg+ donors in HBV-naive recipients wit

Farnesoid X receptor agonists as broad-acting antivirals: Evidence from hepatitis viruses and beyond?

As intracellular organisms, viruses exploit host metabolism to replicate and propagate. The farnesoid X receptor alpha (FXRα) is a bile acid-activated nuclear receptor that regulates bile acid, glucose and lipid metabolism, as well as inflammation and immunity. Since its discovery in 1995, numerous ligands have been developed to treat metabolism-related syndromes. More recently, FXRα has been shown to modulate the life cycle of various viruses that infect human. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the literature regarding the effect of FXRα agonism in viral infections caused by hep

Designing of thiazolidinones against chicken pox, monkey pox, and hepatitis viruses: A computational approach.

Computational designing of four different series (D-G) of thiazolidinone was done starting from different amines which was further condensed with various aldehydes. These underwent in silico molecular investigations for density functional theory (DFT), molecular docking, and absorption, distribution metabolism, excretion, and toxicity (ADMET) studies. The different electrochemical parameters of the compounds are predicted using quantum mechanical modeling approach with Gaussian. The docking software was used to dock the compounds against choosing PDB file for chickenpox, human immunodeficiency

Synthesis and antiviral activities of quinazolinamine-coumarin conjugates toward chikungunya and hepatitis C viruses.

Development of new drugs with broad-spectrum to combat RNA viruses would be beneficial to mankind but faces a great challenge. We designed and efficiently synthesized a series of quinazolin-4-amine-SCH2-coumarin conjugated compounds. Our data of the virus-cell-based assay show five new conjugates inhibit chikungunya virus with EC50 values as potent as 1.96 μM and two conjugates inhibit hepatitis C virus with EC50 values as low as 16.6 μM. These conjugates possess a xylene substituent at the C-4 amino group of quinazoline and a t-butyl substituent at the C-6' position of coumarin.

Hepatitis Viruses Control Host Immune Responses by Modifying the Exosomal Biogenesis Pathway and Cargo.

The development of smart immune evasion mechanisms is crucial for the establishment of acute and chronic viral hepatitis. Hepatitis is a major health problem worldwide arising from different causes, such as pathogens, metabolic disorders, and xenotoxins, with the five hepatitis viruses A, B, C, D, and E (HAV, HBV, HCV, HDV, and HEV) representing the majority of the cases. Most of the hepatitis viruses are considered enveloped. Recently, it was reported that the non-enveloped HAV and HEV are, in reality, quasi-enveloped viruses exploiting exosomal-like biogenesis mechanisms for budding. Regardl

Treatment induced clearance of hepatitis E viruses by interferon-lambda in liver-humanized mice.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis E viruses (HEV) are an underestimated global cause of enterically transmitted viral hepatitis, which may persist in immunocompromised hosts, posing a risk for progressive liver fibrosis with limited treatment options. We previously established liver-humanized mice as a model for chronic HEV infections, which can be cleared by a 2-week pegylated (peg)-Interferon(IFN)α treatment course. However, severe side effects may hamper the use of IFNα in immunocompromised transplant recipient patients. IFNλ may be a valuable alternative, as its receptor is less ubiquitously expressed

RNA viruses at the forefront of human infections - HIV, hepatitis C, and now Ebola.

AIDS emerged in 1981, breaking a period of proud medical progresses in controlling infectious diseases with antimicrobials and vaccines. In an unprecedented way, HIV has attracted much attention for three decades, driving the discovery of new extraordinary molecular diagnostic tools and antiviral drugs. As a result, advances in antiretroviral therapy have made it possible to change HIV infection into a chronic illness. However, the prospects for HIV eradication in the short term are not envisioned for the more than 35 million people worldwide estimated to be living with HIV.

Polymerases of hepatitis C viruses and flaviviruses: structural and mechanistic insights and drug development.

The family Flaviviridae comprises several major human pathogens including hepatitis C virus (genus hepacivirus), yellow fever virus, West Nile virus and dengue virus (genus flavivirus). Flaviviridae genomes comprise a single-stranded RNA segment encoding a single polyprotein that is subsequently processed into 10 mature viral proteins. The nonstructural proteins are released from the C-terminus of the polyprotein and contribute to the infectious cycle by forming membrane-bound, multi-protein compartments within host cells, named the replication complexes, where synthesis of new viral genomes t

Subtyping genotype 2 hepatitis C viruses from Tunisia: identification of two putative new subtypes.

HCV variants were classified into six genotypes (1-6) subdivided into several subtypes with different geographic distribution worldwide. Previous studies conducted in Tunisia showed that genotype 1 counts for more than 80 % of circulating HCV genotypes and most of the isolates belong to subtype 1b. Genotype 2 comes in the second position, however, few sequences have been analyzed and published. In the present study, 89 isolates from Tunisian patients, typed as genotype 2 by the InnoLIPA commercial probe hybridization test, were sequenced in the NS5B and Core/E1 regions. All the isolates, clust

[Type 1 reaction in leprosy: characteristics and association with hepatitis B and C viruses].

Type 1 reaction or reversal reaction is an acute inflammatory episode in the skin and peripheral nerves that is found in up to 30% of leprosy patients and commonly causes physical disabilities. Multidrug chemotherapy and viral infections are associated risk factors. In this study, 620 leprosy patients were evaluated. Reversal reactions were diagnosed in 121 cases (19.5%) and were most frequently found in borderline patients (48%). Starting on multidrug chemotherapy was considered to be a risk factor for reversal reaction: 52% of the cases presented their first episode at this time. Neuritis wa
