Evaluation of various carbon sources on ammonium assimilation and denitrifying phosphorus removal in a modified anaerobic-anoxic-oxic process from low-strength wastewater.

A pilot-scale continuous-flow modified anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (MAAO) process examined the impact of external carbon sources (acetate, glucose, acetate/propionate) on ammonium assimilation, denitrifying phosphorus removal (DPR), and microbial community. Acetate exhibited superior efficacy in promoting the combined process of ammonia assimilation and DPR, enhancing both to 50.0 % and 60.0 %, respectively. Proteobacteria and Bacteroidota facilitated ammonium assimilation, while denitrifying phosphorus-accumulating organisms (DPAOs) played a key role in nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) removal. Deni

Fe/Mn-modified biochar immobilizing Pseudomonas hunanensis SK-4 enhanced simultaneous nitrogen and copper removal: Mechanism and application.

To address the challenges posed by the complex composition and high treatment difficulty of composite pollutants, especially copper and nitrogen compounds in water. This study investigated the application of Pseudomonas hunanensis SK-4, which exhibited exceptional resistance to high concentrations of Cu(Ⅱ). Under 100 mg/L Cu(Ⅱ) stress, SK-4 maintained high removal efficiencies of 98.59 % for NH4+-N and 83.07 % for NO3--N. A novel biochar-microbial composite (FMABC@SK-4) was prepared by immobilizing SK-4 onto self-synthesized iron-manganese modified biochar. In practical tests, FMABC@SK-4 exhib

Decarbonizing the Food System with Microbes and Carbon-Neutral Feedstocks.

Harnessing CO2 and CO2-derived C1-C2 compounds for microbial food production can mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and boost sustainability within the food sector. These innovative technologies support carbon neutrality by generating nutrient-rich edible microbial biomass and biocompounds using autotrophic and heterotrophic microbes. However, qualifying microbial food viability and future impacts in the food sector remains challenging due to their diversity, technical complexity, socioeconomic forces, and incipient markets. This review provides an overview of microbial food systems and then de

Transformations of dimethylsulfide.

Dimethylsulfide (DMS) is a naturally occurring chemical that is part of the biogeochemical sulfur cycle and has been implicated in climate-relevant atmospheric processes. In addition, DMS occurs in soil environments as well as in food stuff as a flavor compound and it can also be associated with disease states such as halitosis. A major environmental source of DMS is the marine algal osmoprotectant dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP). A variety of bacterial enzyme systems lead either to the production of DMS from DMSP or dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) or its oxidation to, e.g., DMSO. The interconversi

Biomining: metal recovery from ores with microorganisms.

Biomining is an increasingly applied biotechnological procedure for processing of ores in the mining industry (biohydrometallurgy). Nowadays the production of copper from low-grade ores is the most important industrial application and a significant part of world copper production already originates from heap or dump/stockpile bioleaching. Conceptual differences exist between the industrial processes of bioleaching and biooxidation. Bioleaching is a conversion of an insoluble valuable metal into a soluble form by means of microorganisms. In biooxidation, on the other hand, gold is predominantly

Microbial reduction of sulfur dioxide with anaerobically digested municipal sewage biosolids as electron donors.

A concentrated stream of sulfur dioxide (SO2) is produced by regeneration of the sorbent in certain new regenerable processes for the desulfurization of flue gas. We have previously proposed that this SO2 can be converted to elemental sulfur for disposal or byproduct recovery using a microbial/Claus process. In this process, two-thirds of the SO2-reducing gas stream would be contacted with a mixed culture containing sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), where SO2 would act as an electron acceptor with reduction to hydrogen sulfide (H2S). This H2S could then be recombined with the remaining SO2 and

Modeling quaternary ammonium compound inhibition of biological nutrient removal activated sludge.

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are surface-active organic compounds common in industrial cleaner formulations widely used in various sanitation applications. While acting as effective pathogenic biocides, QACs lack selective toxicity and often have poor target specificity. As a result, adverse effects on biological processes and thus the performance of biological nutrient removal (BNR) systems may be encountered when QACs enter wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Because of these impacts, there is motivation to screen wastewater influents for QACs and for process engineers to consider t

Bio-augmentation with dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) driven sulfide-oxidizing bacteria enhances the durability of nitrate-mediated souring control.

Biological souring (producing sulfide) is a global challenge facing anaerobic water bodies, especially the oil reservoir fluids. Nitrate injection has demonstrated great potential in souring control, and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) bacteria was proposed to play crucial roles in the process. How to durably control souring with nitrate amendment, however, remains undiscovered. Herein, Gordonia sp. TD-4, a DNRA-driven sulfide-oxidizing bacterium, was used to elucidate the effects of bio-augmentation with DNRA bacteria on the durability of nitrate-mediated souring control. T

Genome-resolved metagenomics of an acid-tolerant nitrifying biofilm suggests cooperative nitrogen cycling at low pH.

Ammonia emissions from animal feeding operations are a major source of nitrogen loss and environmental pollution. Nitrifying bacteria used within ammonia scrubbers offers a promising strategy to recover nitrogen for fertilizer; however, the acidic environment within air scrubbers generally inhibits nitrification and sustained nitrification at low pH remains poorly understood. Here, we present a genome-resolved analysis of an acid-tolerant nitrifying community (ATNC) enriched from a laboratory bioreactor operating at pH values between 4 and 4.6 that was previously shown to support nitrification

Community composition and functional genes explain different ecological roles of heterotrophic bacteria attached to two bloom-forming cyanobacterial genera.

Eutrophication leads to frequent outbreaks of cyanobacterial blooms, however, the effect of heterotrophic bacteria attached to cyanobacterial cells is unclear. Field investigations were carried out to gain a deeper understanding of the community composition and functional role of heterotrophic bacteria attached to Dolichospermum and Microcystins cells. The significantly positive relationships between Dolichospermum density and total nitrogen (TN) and between Microcystins density and particle nitrogen (PN) indicated the strong nitrogen (N) demand of these two species. The lack of functional gen

Fractionation study in bioleached metallurgy wastes using six-step sequential extraction.

The stored metallurgy wastes contain residues from ore processing operations that are characterized by relatively high concentrations of heavy metals. The bioleaching process makes use of bacteria to recover elements from industrial wastes and to decrease potential risk of environmental contamination. Wastes were treated by solutions containing bacteria. In this work, the optimized six-stage sequential extraction procedure was applied for the fractionation of Ni, Cr, Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn in iron-nickel metallurgy wastes deposited in Southern Poland (Szklary). Fractionation and total concentration

Improving Efficiency and Stability of Anammox through Sequentially Coupling Nitritation and Denitritation in a Single-Stage Bioreactor.

This study developed an innovative process for the treatment of low-ammonium wastewater in a single-stage bioreactor over 250 days. Partial nitritation-anammox and partial denitritation-anammox (PN/A-PDN/A) processes were combined under aerobic/anoxic operation, and a high nitrogen removal efficiency (94.6%) was obtained at a nitrogen removal rate of 0.54 kg N m-3 d-1 and a chemical oxygen demand to total inorganic nitrogen (COD/TIN) ratio of 0.28. Mass balance analysis identified anammox as the dominant nitrogen removal pathway, achieving 88.3% nitrogen loss. The abundance of anammox bacteria

Treatment of high-phosphorus load wastewater by column packed with non-burning compound filler/gravel/ceramsite: evaluation of performance and microorganism community.

Cost-effective and environmental-friendly substrates are essential for the constructed wetlands (CWs). In this study, the column test was used to explore the differences in pollutant purification performance, microbial community structure and abundance between non-burning compound filler and conventional CWs substrates (i.e. gravel and ceramsite) at low temperature (0-15℃). It was found that the maximum phosphorus removal efficiency of compound filler (99%) was better than gravel (18%) and ceramsite (21%). Besides, the proportion of aerobic heterotrophic bacteria capable of ammonium oxidation,

Integrated system for the treatment of oxides of nitrogen from flue gases.

A novel and effective system was developed for the complete treatment of NOx from flue gases. The system consisted of photocatalytic or ozone oxidation of NOx, followed by scrubbing and biological denitrification. Maximum photocatalytic oxidation of NOx was achieved while using powdered TiO2 at a catalytic loading rate of 10 g/h, relative humidity of 50%, and a space time of 10 s. The used catalyst was regenerated and reused. A total of 72% of oxidized NO was recovered as HNO3/HNO2 in the regeneration process. Stoichiometrically, 10% excess ozone was able to affect 100% oxidation of NO to NO2.

Influence of elevated river flow on hypoxia occurrence, nutrient concentration and microbial dynamics in a tropical estuary.

We sampled the Klang estuary during the inter-monsoon and northeast monsoon period (July-Nov 2011, Oct-Nov 2012), which coincided with higher rainfall and elevated Klang River flow. The increased freshwater inflow into the estuary resulted in water column stratification that was observed during both sampling periods. Dissolved oxygen (DO) dropped below 63 μM, and hypoxia was observed. Elevated river flow also transported dissolved inorganic nutrients, chlorophyll a and bacteria to the estuary. However, bacterial production did not correlate with DO concentration in this study. As hypoxia was p

Leptothrix ochracea genomes reveal potential for mixotrophic growth on Fe(II) and organic carbon.

UNLABELLED: Leptothrix ochracea creates distinctive iron-mineralized mats that carpet streams and wetlands. Easily recognized by its iron-mineralized sheaths, L. ochracea was one of the first microorganisms described in the 1800s. Yet it has never been isolated and does not have a complete genome sequence available, so key questions about its physiology remain unresolved. It is debated whether iron oxidation can be used for energy or growth and if L. ochracea is an autotroph, heterotroph, or mixotroph. To address these issues, we sampled L. ochracea-rich mats from three of its typical environm

Overnight stagnation of drinking water in household taps induces microbial growth and changes in community composition.

Drinking water quality is routinely monitored in the distribution network but not inside households at the point of consumption. Fluctuating temperatures, residence times (stagnation), pipe materials and decreasing pipe diameters can promote bacterial growth in buildings. To test the influence of stagnation in households on the bacterial cell concentrations and composition, water was sampled from 10 separate households after overnight stagnation and after flushing the taps. Cell concentrations, measured by flow cytometry, increased (2-3-fold) in all water samples after stagnation. This increas

Fluvial biofilm functioning is impaired by 1H-benzotriazole under fish-mediated nutrient enrichment.

Microbial biofilms respond to environmental stress and drive key biogeochemical processes in streams, underpinning ecosystem services such as toxicant removal, carbon fixation, and nutrient cycling. 1H-benzotriazole (B1H) is a ubiquitous emerging pollutant with known effects on microorganisms, plants and animals, that frequently co-occurs with nutrient enrichment in effluent-impacted freshwaters. Using fluvial microcosms, we evaluated the effects of B1H below reported toxicity thresholds (nominal: 200µg/L; measured 175±12µg/L, mean±SD) on epilithic biofilm structure and functioning under dynam
