Hiccup is an intermittent, abrupt, involuntary contraction of the diaphragm resulting in sudden inspiration abruptly opposed by the closure of the glottis. Persistent hiccups can interfere with daily activities and cause sleep disturbance and fatigue. We report a case of persistent hiccups occurring in a heart and lung transplant recipient that was successfully treated with acupuncture.

RATIONALE: Intractable hiccups pose a significant impact on patients' quality of life and mental well-being, yet effective nonpharmacological interventions remain limited. Fu's subcutaneous needling (FSN), a novel acupuncture technique targeting myofascial trigger points (MTrPs), has not been previously reported in treating intractable hiccups.
PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient developed intractable hiccups (30-40 episodes/min) following treatment for allergic cough, unresponsive to medications and conventional acupuncture.
DIAGNOSES: Intractable hiccups.
INTERVENTIONS: FSN was applied to MTrPs

OBJECTIVE: Intractable hiccups, which are hiccups that can last longer than 1 month, may be very debilitating for patients. With limited evidence and a lack of treatment guidelines, refractory hiccups can be difficult to manage. We aim to present a case of refractory idiopathic intractable hiccups treated with amitriptyline in conjunction with other medications shown to produce hiccups relief.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The patient's electronic health record, direct patient care experiences, and a systematic literature review were used for this case report. We report a 53-year-old male patient wi

Acute cholecystitis due to inflammation of the gallbladder typically presents with right upper quadrant abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and fever. However, elderly patients with comorbidities can present with atypical symptoms like generalized malaise or confusion, making diagnosis challenging. Here, we present a unique case of acute cholecystitis presenting solely with persistent hiccups. The diagnosis was confirmed with imaging, and it was managed conservatively with a resolution of hiccups. This highlights the importance of keeping broad differentials and using prudent imaging, especially

BACKGROUND: Hiccups are common symptoms that last for less than 48 hours. However, we encountered a case of renal infarction in a patient with prolonged hiccup. The relationship between hiccups and renal infarction is important in differentiating patients with prolonged hiccups.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 87-year-old Japanese man with atrial fibrillation and receiving antithrombotic therapy presented to the emergency department with prolonged hiccups. The patient discontinued antithrombotic therapy for atrial fibrillation due to subcortical bleeding, after which he experienced right back pain. He

Persistent hiccups (lasting more than 48 hours) can cause physical and emotional distress. They can result in dehydration, exhaustion, malnutrition, insomnia, wound dehiscence, ventilatory desynchronization, and hemodynamic changes. Hiccups are thought to be due to a complex reflex arc involving peripheral nerves and central structures such as the brainstem, temporal lobe, basal ganglia, hypothalamus, and spinal cord levels C3-5. Medullary strokes, for instance, have been reported to cause hiccups. We report a patient with a thalamic bleed who developed persistent hiccups. A 56-year-old man wa

The typical clinical presentation of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) includes chest pain that may radiate to the left arm, shoulder, jaw, and neck, accompanied by diaphoresis, dyspnea, nausea, vomiting, and hiccups, which have been observed as the sole symptom of presentation. The mechanism of hiccups involves the activation of the vagus and phrenic nerves, leading to the activation of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles. Several hypotheses link hiccups to ACS, associating irritation of the left anterior descending artery with activation of sympathetic phrenic and vagal nerves. This case repor

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous pneumomediastinum is the presence of free air in the mediastinum that does not occur from direct thoracic or esophageal trauma. It is a very rare condition usually related to patients with asthma, respiratory infections, or foreign body aspiration. Only a few cases are reported to be associated with severe reflux events.
CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 10-year-old female with spontaneous pneumomediastinum extending to the neck secondary to severe and persistent hiccups, with no history of asthma, trauma, surgery, acute infection, foreign body aspiration, and inte

In this study, we used the large number of cases in the FDA adverse-event reporting system (FAERS) database to investigate risk factors for drug-induced hiccups and to explore the relationship between hiccups and gender. From 11,810,863 adverse drug reactions reported between the first quarter of 2004 and the first quarter of 2020, we extracted only those in which side effects occurred between the beginning and end of drug administration. Our sample included 1454 adverse reactions for hiccups, with 1159 involving males and 257 involving females (the gender in 38 reports was unknown). We perfor

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is the newly discovered infectious disease, affecting millions worldwide. Majority of the patients present with mild respiratory syndrome. Some neurological symptoms are reported like anosmia & dysgeusia. We are presenting a case with hiccups as an unusual symptom. An elderly male patient presented to Bapuji teaching hospital attached to JJM medical college, Davangere on 24th July 2020 with intractable hiccups in the last 5 days. There were no other symptoms. Patient's saturation was initially 98% at room air which then dropped to 90%. Based on clinical knowhow,

INTRODUCTION: Herpes virus family's association with visceral lesions is well established. Herpes simplex virus presentations vary based on immune status. Intractable hiccups due to herpes simplex esophagitis, to the best of our knowledge have been described twice in the literature. We present a 68 year-old immunocompromised male with intractable hiccups for 10 months.

This study describes a patient with lateral medullary ischemia (LMI) presenting with persistent hiccups followed by vertigo with horizontal head-shaking-induced contralesional nystagmus (HSN) and discusses pertinent pathophysiology. A 65-year-old man presented with persistent hiccups and disabling spells of vertigo, lasting 30 seconds that became much more frequent and associated with lateropulsion to the right. A strong left beating HSN was evident. Magnetic resonance imaging and angiography, and intra-arterial cerebral digital subtracted angiography showed subacute ischemic lesions in the ri

Hiccupping is a characteristic noise caused by a sudden closure of the glottis after repeated, involuntary, spasmodic contraction of the respiratory muscles. Hiccupping caused by gastric distention, spicy foods, and neural dysfunction often resolves itself without any treatment. Some hiccups are associated with certain diseases or occur postsurgically, and life-restricting intractable hiccups should be treated. The cause of hiccups should be expressly stated for treatment. We report a case of inoperable esophagogastric junction tumor with hiccupping after esophageal stent that could only be tr

We present a case of persistent hiccups (singultus) after a lateral medullary cerebrovascular accident. The patient presented with a two-day history of nausea and vomiting. Clinically, the patient had a loss of pain and temperature on the left side of the face, a loss of pain and temperature on the right side of the trunk, a mild left hemiparesis, and a left-sided ataxia. Nystagmus, diplopia, and hiccups were also evident. A left lateral medullary syndrome in the vascular distribution of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery was diagnosed. Work-up included a magnetic resonance imaging angio

Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) has been reported to be a cause of hiccups. Conversely, some reports state that hiccups cause or adversely affect GER disease. There have been few descriptions in the literature of what hiccups do to esophageal motility. We present a patient with long-standing symptomatic GER and intractable hiccups. Esophageal manometry during hiccups showed absence of LES pressure and absence of peristaltic activity in the esophageal body in response to swallowing, factors which could aggravate GER. Esophageal motility in the absence of hiccups was normal. Antireflux surgery in

Hiccups result from involuntary contractions of the diaphragm, driven by a complex neuromuscular reflex. Three patients with persistent hiccups underwent esophageal high-resolution manometry during hiccup episodes, revealing a consistent finding: sustained contraction of the esophagogastric junction with intermittent pressure peaks. This pattern, termed the "Hiccup-Induced Esophagogastric Waveform," shows significant esophageal pressure changes linked to hiccup reflex. It may reflect a compensatory mechanism to expel excess esophageal residue or gas. These findings suggest hiccups could exacer
