RATIONALE: Hip fractures affect over 10 million people annually worldwide and are expected to increase with an ageing population, contributing significantly to morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Hemiarthroplasty, a common treatment for displaced femoral neck fractures, accounts for more than half of hip fracture surgeries in older adults. However, the optimal surgical approach - anterior, lateral, or posterior - remains uncertain, with decisions often based on surgeon preference or institutional protocols.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of different surgical approaches for hemiart

A retrospective analysis of a compression hip screw with four reversibly deployable talons was done. Fifty-four patients had sufficient radiographs to be included in this analysis. One-year mortality was 17% and increased to 41% by 2 years. No lag screws cut out, and postoperative slide was reduced compared with that in many published series. Three patients had revision of a failed alternate-type hip pin with the Talon hip compression screw. Previous studies showed the talons provide the definitive difference in allowing enhanced compression at the time of surgery, preventing cut-out by enhanc

Recently, it has been shown that hip fractures can be effectively prevented by use of hip protectors. To determine who would gain most benefit from use of hip protectors, we conducted a study with the aim to clarify factors that contribute to the occurrence of fracture in individuals who fall on their hip. Hip fracture patients were compared with individuals who had fallen on their hip without sustaining a fracture. The study group consisted of 123 consecutive hip fracture patients aged 70 years or over (mean age 82 years, female 82 years and male 80 years). The control group comprised 132 ind

BACKGROUND: Fragility fractures are commonly seen in the distal radius and hip in osteoporotic individuals. While hip fractures have high mortality rates, distal radius fractures are known to cause morbidity in the form of wrist stiffness. This study aims to compare the chronological age of patients who sustain distal radius and hip fractures following a trivial injury.
METHODS: The study was done by reviewing available in-patient medical records between January 2019 and July 2024 of patients aged more than 50 years. The data was analysed on Jamovi software version 2.6.17 by using a Mann-Whit

AIM: Fragility hip fracture has become a major global health concern. Data related to recurrent fragility fractures are sparse in the South Asian region.
METHOD: We assessed the prevalence of prior fragility fracture among patients admitted with new hip fracture to a tertiary care hospital in southern Sri Lanka. Also the incidence of refracture was assessed among hip fracture survivors followed up for 24 months after discharge.
RESULTS: Three hundred and nine patients with incident hip fracture were admitted during the study period (June 2014-February 2015) and 11 patients died while in the

BACKGROUND: Hip fractures are a common problem in the ageing population. Hip arthroplasty is the common treatment option for displaced intracapsular neck of femur fractures. Even though hip replacements are successful in restoring mobility, reducing pain and diminishing loss of health-related quality of life, the potential impact of a hip fracture on life expectancy as well as the postoperative mortality need consideration. The purpose of this study was to describe the mid-term relative survival rate for a cohort of Swedish patients whom underwent total- or hemiarthroplasty surgery following h

PURPOSE: The Hip Fracture Prognosis (HF-Prognosis) Tool was developed using data from the Spanish National Hip Fracture Registry (SNHFR) to predict 30-day recovery of ambulation. Our study's aim was to externally validate the model in a later cohort (2021-2022) to ensure its continued predictive accuracy and clinical utility.
METHODS: Data were obtained from the SNHFR, a multicenter, prospective registry. Patients aged ≥ 75 years admitted for fragility hip fracture with information on pre-fracture ambulation were included. The primary outcome was recovery of pre-fracture walking ability at 1

INTRODUCTION: The Nottingham Hip Fracture Score (NHFS) was developed to predict 30-day mortality for patients with hip fracture. This study aimed to validate the NHFS in a cohort with sufficient statistical power.
METHODS: Data were extracted from a prospective hip-fracture database (FAMMI). Patients were included between January 1, 2018 and January 11, 2021. All consecutively admitted patients ≥18 years of age with a hip fracture (ie, femoral neck fracture, intertrochanteric fracture, and subtrochanteric fracture) were included. BACKGROUND: Hip fractures are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the elderly. Fast-track multidisciplinary co-management of these patients, rapid preoperative optimization, early surgery, and expeditious rehabilitation may minimize morbidity and mortality. In this study, we evaluated outcomes of fixation of hip fractures in the elderly patients managed by Geriatric Hip Fracture Program at a military hospital in India.
METHODS: A total of 114 patients above 60 years of age with hip fractures were enrolled. They were comanaged by a team of specialists and fast-tracked to surgery.

PURPOSE: To describe the impact of COVID-19 on hip fracture care during the first 6 months of the pandemic.
METHODS: A secondary analysis of 4385 cases in the Irish Hip Fracture Database from 1st June 2019 to 31st August 2020 was conducted.
RESULTS: Hip fracture admissions decreased by 15% during the study period (p < 0.001). Patient characteristics were largely unchanged as the majority of cases occurred in females over 80 years admitted from home. Adherence to many of the Irish Hip Fracture Standards (IHFS) changed following the COVID-19 pandemic. There was an increase in patients admitted

AIM: To report the epidemiology and outcomes after hip fractures in the patients under 65 years of age.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a prospective, multi-centre observational study using the Scottish Hip Fracture Audit Database. Case-mix, process and outcome data was collected by dedicated coordinators on site at the time of admission, at 120 days after the injury and on any re-operations within 12 months. The study cohort consisted of 1896 individuals aged 50-64 years. Patient variables and outcomes were compared to a control group of 15,461 individuals aged 75-89 years of age. The con

Background Extracapsular hip fractures are routinely treated with fixation, and the majority heal without complication. The fixation fails in a minority of cases, typically either by 'cutting out' of the superior femoral head or through breakage of the metalwork following non-union. In such cases, if operative treatment is thought appropriate, there are two major treatment options: revision fixation of the fracture or joint replacement surgery. Methods Medline on OvidSP was searched using relevant medical-specific subject headings (MeSH) and keywords. The inclusion criteria were: study regardi

Postoperative delirium (POD) is a frequent complication in geriatric patients with hip fractures, which is linked to poorer functional recovery, longer hospital stays, and higher short-and long-term mortality. Patients with increased age, preoperative cognitive impairment, comorbidities, perioperative polypharmacy, and delayed surgery are more prone to develop POD after hip fracture surgery. In this narrative review, we outlined the latest findings on postoperative delirium in geriatric patients with hip fractures, focusing on its pathophysiology, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. BACKGROUND: Early surgery is recommended for patients with hip fractures. Average time to surgery in Japan is 3.8 days. Such delay could be caused by the burden of preoperative assessment and management of geriatric comorbidities upon orthopedic surgeons. Hospitalist co-management has potential benefits in comprehensive perioperative care that could positively affect time to surgery in patients with hip fractures. We compare clinical outcomes of patients with hip fractures managed by orthopedic surgeon-led care (conventional group) vs. those of patients with hip fractures managed by hospitalis

BACKGROUND: Hip fracture is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in older people, and its impact on society is substantial. After surgery, people require rehabilitation to help them recover. Multidisciplinary rehabilitation is where rehabilitation is delivered by a multidisciplinary team, supervised by a geriatrician, rehabilitation physician or other appropriate physician. This is an update of a Cochrane Review first published in 2009.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of multidisciplinary rehabilitation, in either inpatient or ambulatory care settings, for older people with hip fracture

INTRODUCTION: A subtrochanteric proximal femur fracture occurs in the 5 cm of bone immediately distal to the lesser trochanter. UK national guidelines advise that adults with subtrochanteric fractures should be treated with an intramedullary nail (IMN). This study aims to compare peri-operative outcome measures of patients with subtrochanteric fractures treated with either an IMN or a dynamic hip screw (DHS) construct.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed subtrochanteric fractures presenting at our institution over 4.5 years (October 2014-May 2019), classifying them into two tre

INTRODUCTION: Stress fractures are common injuries in the military population, they begin with the imposition of repetitive and excessive effort on the bone. This leads to the acceleration of bone remodeling and production of microfractures. The incidence, during their basic combat training, is 0.8 to 5.1% for men compared to 1.1 to 18% among women. We present a series of hip stress fractures in young male military men with progressive training of 8 hours a day over a period of 14 weeks.
RESULTS: Mean age 19.72 years, 4 transcervical and 7 basicervical fractures, 6 displaced and 5 no, 54.5 %

As the silver tsunami hits the world, older patients with hip fractures are expected to increase to 6.3 million by the year 2050, of which the majority will occur in Asia. The estimated global cost of hip fractures in the year 2050 is estimated to reach U.S. $130 billion. Hence, in addition to implementation of prevention strategies, it is important to develop an optimal model of care for older patients with hip fracture to minimize the huge medical and socioeconomic burden, especially in rapidly aging nations. This review summarizes the complications of hip fractures, importance of comprehens
