Rarely, Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) manifests exclusively in the skin, typically as nodules on the trunk and extremities. Recognition of characteristic histopathologic features enables diagnosis of RDD. A 55-year-old female presented with a 7-year history of cutaneous nodules involving the trunk and extremities. A prior skin biopsy specimen at a different institution had demonstrated a dense dermal lymphohistiocytic infiltrate with histiocytes containing GMS+ forms, favored to represent cryptococcal organisms, with a differential diagnosis including other infections with parasitized histiocyte

A seven-year-old patient was admitted to our hospital with the complaints of fever, malaise, and abdominal distention. In the bone marrow aspiration smears, leishmania amastigotes were observed. The patient was diagnosed as having visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and treated with liposomal amphotericin B (L-AMB). The authors report their observation of foamy histiocytes seen in the bone marrow aspiration smears of the patient with VL after L-AMB treatment. This effect of L-AMB needs to be recognized, since L-AMB may represent a further condition in addition to the other diseases that are associated

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to clarify the prognostic significance of large histiocytes in Papanicolaou smears.
METHOD: During a 2-year period, 893 smears were assessed by the Cytology Laboratory of our Hospital. Twenty-one smears were reported including large histiocytes (2.4%). Colposcopy was also performed in all of these women.
RESULTS: 9/21 of the women (43%) presented vaginocervicitis, whereas 3/21, 1/21, 1/21, 1/21 and 1/21 revealed endometrial polyps, complex hyperplasia with atypia, simple hyperplasia after tamoxifene use, submucosal myoma and endometrial carcinoma re

Sea-blue histiocytes are described in the bone marrow of a 15-year-old male patient suffering from idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. Cytochemically the storage material in these cells appeared to be glycophospholipid. Lipid analysis of blood leucocytes and nucleated cells of bone marrow showed a significant increase in the phospholipids, triglycerides and cholesterol as compared to age-matched controls. Serum lipid analysis showed a mild increase of phospholipids as compared to age-matched controls.

We previously reported (1) that tracheobronchial secretions of patients in hemorrhagic shock contained significantly more iron laden histiocytes than secretions of matched controls and demonstrated by histiologic studies in rats bled to hemorrhagic shock that these animals' lungs contained significantly more iron laden histiocytes than those of a control group. Two explanations appeared plausible: 1) abnormal hemoglobin breakdown products of systemic hypoperfusion during shock (2, 3, 5) may have accumulated in the pulmonary circulation where they were phagocytozed by pulmonary histiocytes, or

A method of CSF cell culturing, based on observations of cultured cells isolated from 700 CSF specimens obtained for routine diagnostic procedures by lumbar puncture from patients who had no proven or suspected neoplastic disease, is described which enables the demonstration of proliferating mononuclear elements even when they are present in specimens with low cell count. Spread on surfaces of plastic and glass material, monocytes and histiocytes in CSF cell cultures can appear as polygonal or crescent shaped epitheloid cells, may assume spindle shapes, or transform into multinucleated giant c

The present study reports a rare case of systemic M. scrofulaceum infection in an AIDS patient and analyses the inflammatory infiltrate in a lymph node by immunohistochemistry. Special emphasis is put on the histiocytes. The diffuse infiltrate consists mainly of large histiocytes that contain numerous bacilli. These cells display the phenotype of mature histiocytes and in addition coexpress the antigens recognized by RFD7 and RFD9, both markers of different subsets of histiocytes which have been reported to be co-expressed by the infected histiocytes in the infiltrate of lepromatous lepra. Regressing atypical histiocytosis (RAH) of skin is a cutaneous noduloulcerative proliferation of atypical neoplastic histiocytes with concomitant polymorphous inflammation, frequently pronounced epidermal hyperplasia, and an unexpectedly indolent biologic course. Spontaneous regression and recurrence without systemic spread were the course in follow-up periods of over six years. Histopathologically, characteristic-appearing atypical mononuclear and multinucleated "RAH" cells showed erythrophagocytosis as well as ultrastructural, surface marker, and enzyme cytochemical features indicating histi

Although histiocytic lesions of the fallopian tube are relatively rare compared to their epithelial counterparts, there exists a spectrum of histiocytic lesions involving the fallopian tube that are described under different terminologies dependent on the involved compartment of the fallopian tube. A common histologic denominator of all the hitherto reported tubal histiocytic lesions is the presence of sheets and clusters of histiocytes without any supportive connective tissue. The current study describes three cases of a heretofore-undescribed papillary histiocytic lesion in the lumen of the

Clinical and morphologic features of seven T-cell lymphomas of the large cell type are described. The tumors were grouped into those with irregular (3 cases) and those with round and regular nuclei (4 cases). In both groups, variation in cell size, numerous histiocytes and vessels, and many mitoses were distinguishing features. In only 1 case in the round and regular nucleus group was there relatively little variation in cell size and a paucity of histiocytes. Abundant polyribosomes, long strands of rough endoplasmic reticulum, and lysosomal granules were prominent electron microscopic feature

BACKGROUND Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a rare and aggressive hematopoietic malignancy characterized by histiocytic cell proliferation. Its rarity and nonspecific presentation create significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, particularly in HIV-positive patients. CASE REPORT An HIV-positive man in his late 20s from a rural area and low-income background, referred from a district hospital, presented with asymptomatic nodular and crateriform lesions on the face, thorax, and back, characterized by central keratosis, crust, and erythematous-violaceous infiltrated edges. Histopathological a

We report a 31-year-old male patient repeatedly hospitalized for mimicking infectious symptoms. Following standardized anti-infective and anti-inflammatory treatment, clinical evolution was discordant, characterized by treatment non-response and symptom exacerbation. Ultimately, the multidisciplinary team and repeated histopathological examinations diagnosed histiocytic sarcoma (HS). Unfortunately, the treatment opportunity was lost due to HS's high aggressiveness and rapid progression.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a systemic inflammatory syndrome characterized by heightened activation and proliferation of nonmalignant macrophages and excessive cytokine release. Whereas acute kidney injury is common in this syndrome, direct glomerular involvement by activated histiocytes is very rare. We present the case of a man in his 20s who presented with fevers, malaise, flank pain, anemia, thrombocytopenia, severe acute kidney injury, and proteinuria. A kidney biopsy revealed histiocytic glomerulopathy and subacute thrombotic microangiopathy, and he was diagnosed with HLH

In this review, we discuss a logical approach to diagnosis of histiocytic and dendritic cell lesions of the mediastinum. We break down the differential diagnosis between true neoplasms of histiocytic and dendritic cells [Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD), Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), and follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS)] versus selected neoplasms of other lineages which frequently attract non-neoplastic histiocytes or resemble them morphologically (carcinoma, melanoma, sarcoma, germinoma, mesothelioma, and lymphoma). As neoplasms in the latter category are more common, they should be

Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a term used to describe malignant hyperplasia of cells exhibiting morphological and immunophenotypical characteristics similar to those of mature cells, with expression of one or more tissue cell markers, excluding acute monocytic leukemia and primitive monocytic sarcoma. We herein describe a case of histiocytic sarcoma of the neck supported by histopathological and immunohistological evidence. A 53-year-old female patient of Chinese descent presented with a rapidly enlarging right neck mass. Imaging studies revealed multiple right cervical lymphadenectases with rig

A 7-year-old female domestic rabbit suffered from labored respiration, poor appetite, mild anemia and thrombocytopenia. Radioscopic examination revealed masses in multiple locations including the intrapleural cavity and spleen. Forty-three days after the first visit to a private veterinary clinic, the rabbit died of severe respiratory distress. Microscopically, all of the masses were composed of round to polygonal neoplastic cells with distinct cell borders that were arranged in a sheet pattern. Multinucleated giant neoplastic cells were often observed. Some neoplastic cells had phagocytozed o

Although there have been dramatic improvements in the treatment of children with non-hodgkin lymphoma, hodgkin lymphoma and histiocytic disorders over the past 3 decades, many still relapse or are refractory to primary therapy. In addition, late effects such as 2nd malignancies, cardiomyopathy and infertility remain a major concern. Thus, this review focuses on the current state of the science and, in particular, novel treatment strategies that are aimed at improving outcomes for all pediatric patients with lymphoma and histiocytic disorders while reducing treatment related morbidity.
