Examining the effect of childhood trauma on psychological distress, risk of violence and engagement, in forensic mental health.

Previous research has found an association between childhood trauma and insecure attachment and psychological distress, risk of violence and engagement in therapy. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between these factors in a forensic population. Sixty-four participants from three secure psychiatric hospitals completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), the Relationship Scales Questionnaire (RSQ) and the Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation - Outcome Measure (CORE-OM). Intergenerational transmission of adverse childhood experiences: Differential maternal and paternal associations with offspring mental health in Chinese school-aged children by multi-method.

BACKGROUND: While parental adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are recognized risk factors on offspring's mental health, particularly depression and anxiety, critical gaps persist regarding: (1) differential maternal vs paternal effects, (2) dimensional versus cumulative risk effects, and (3) buffering roles of parental and offspring factors. This study firstly, aimed to investigate the associations between parental ACEs and depression and anxiety symptoms in their school-aged children using five complementary ACEs approaches: the single adversity model, accumulating risk model, dimensional m

Association between relational trauma and empathy among male offenders in China.

BACKGROUND: Offenders are more likely than the general population to have experienced relationship trauma. They are also more likely to have lower empathy. To date, relationships between historical trauma and later empathic states have not been examined among offenders. AIMS: To explore the association between history of trauma in close personal relationships and empathy among offenders. Our research question is: Is such relational trauma associated with self-rated impairments in empathy? METHODS: All men with a primary school education and above at a single all-male prison in Jiangsu Provin

Trauma-informed Approaches to Substance Use Interventions with Indigenous Peoples: A Scoping Review.

Indigenous Peoples experience disproportionately higher rates of problematic substance use. These problems are situated in a context of individual and intergenerational trauma from colonization, residential schools, and racist and discriminatory practices, policies, and services. Therefore, substance use interventions need to adopt a trauma-informed approach. We aimed to synthesize and report the current literature exploring the intersection of trauma and substance use interventions for Indigenous Peoples. Fourteen databases were searched using keywords for Indigenous Peoples, trauma, and subs

Association of Economic Recession and Social Distancing With Pediatric Non-accidental Trauma During COVID-19.

INTRODUCTION: There has been concern that the incidence of non-accidental trauma (NAT) cases in children would rise during the COVID-19 pandemic due to the combination of social isolation and economic depression. Our goal was to evaluate NAT incidence and severity during the pandemic across multiple US cities. METHODS: Multi-institutional, retrospective cohort study comparing NAT rates in children <18 y old during the COVID-19 pandemic (March-August 2020) with a recent historical data (January 2015-February 2020) and during a previous economic recession (January 2007-December 2011) at level 1

Missed Recognition of Potential Abuse in Young Children Presenting to the Emergency Department: A Retrospective Study.

AIM: To determine the prevalence of abuse-related red flags and the frequency of subsequent evaluations among young children presenting to the emergency department (ED) with trauma-related complaints, and to quantify the association between red flags and further evaluation. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of children < 3 years presenting to a tertiary paediatric ED in 2019 with trauma-related chief complaints identified from structured electronic health record (EHR) data. Red flags were categorised as historical, physical, diagnostic, or caretaker/household. Two trained abs

[Psychiatric sequelae of craniocerebral trauma--a review of the literature].

In a brief review psychiatric aspects of head-injured patients are discussed. The topic is put into a historical perspective. Examples of recent developments in head-trauma research are given. Differentiation between focal and diffuse brain injury is suggested to be of clinical relevance. Little is known as yet about the neuropsychologic and psychiatric sequelae of diffuse axonal injury to the brain.

Mary Reynolds: a post-traumatic reinterpretation of a classic case of multiple personality disorder.

In 1811 Mary Reynolds, a somber Pennsylvania spinster, awoke from a prolonged sleep as a new personality. Family memoirs describing her 18 years of shifts between two personalities shaped nineteenth century thinking about multiple personality disorder. As in other early case histories, no mention was made of childhood trauma, a factor found in 97% of contemporary cases. This discussion reviews genealogical and historical documents which suggest that Mary Reynolds did experience early trauma as a victim of religious persecution, which finally forced her family to leave Birmingham, England, when

Postpartum Experiences of Women With a History of Trauma and Substance Use Disorders.

PURPOSE: To explore how relational, health care, and sociocultural systems shape mental health and distress management in postpartum women with trauma and substance use histories. METHOD: Using a qualitative design informed by phenomenological sensibility and ecological systems theory, we conducted semi-structured interviews with seven women who had given birth within the past 5 years and self-disclosed a history of trauma, and self-identified as sober. RESULTS: Reflexive thematic analysis generated seven themes organized across five ecological systems levels: Perception of Mental Health and

Biographical truths and their clinical consequences: understanding 'embodied memories' in a third psychoanalysis with a traumatized patient recovered from severe poliomyelitis.

The relationship between 'narrative' and 'historical-biographical truth' in psychoanalytic treatment has become the subject of many controversial debates in recent years. Findings of contemporary memory research have lead to great scepticism as to whether therapists are able objectively and reliably to reconstruct biographical events on the basis of their observations in the therapeutic situation. Some authors even claim that psychoanalysts should concentrate exclusively on observing the here and now of the patient's behaviour within the transference relationship to the analyst. In this paper

Trepanation as a Plausible Early Form of Cranial Decompression.

Trepanation is widely recognized as the earliest known cranial operation, yet its functional purpose remains debated. Traditional interpretations have emphasized ritual practice, treatment of cranial trauma, or empirical responses to neurological symptoms. We propose a focused historical-neurosurgical interpretation: that a meaningful subset of prehistoric trepanations may represent a plausible early empirical form of cranial decompression. The strongest quantitative evidence comes from the Cusco-region Peruvian series, in which 66 trepanned individuals accounted for 109 perforations and 26 in

Factors Contributing to Suicide Deaths Among Sri Lankan Tamil Men in Toronto, Canada: Perspectives of Family, Friends, and Service Providers.

Approximately 4500 Canadians die by suicide annually, with men at three times the risk of women. Some ethnic and racialized groups face heightened vulnerability due to discrimination, historical trauma, and limited access to mental healthcare. In response to an alarming number of suicide deaths among Sri Lankan Tamil men in the Greater Toronto Area in 2019, this community-engaged study investigated micro-, meso-, and macro-level factors that contribute to suicide deaths in this population. In collaboration with Vasantham Tamil Wellness Centre, we conducted a community-based qualitative interpr

Introduction to the "Japanese and Western approaches to psychotrauma" symposium.

Understandings of psychotrauma have changed throughout medical history, shaped by cultural and social factors. Reviewing transcultural perspectives of psychotrauma helps understand its complexities and contextual impacts. This paper summarizes the Japan-Netherlands symposium on psychotrauma held on March 1, 2024. Despite experiencing psychological trauma from World War II and numerous natural disasters, Japan did not actively research post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for nearly 50 years after the war. The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake and the Tokyo subway Sarin gas attack (1995) populari

Preliminary Evidence for Anhedonia as a Marker of Sexual Trauma in Female Adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common condition with heterogeneous presentations that often include predominant anhedonia. Previous studies have revealed that childhood trauma is a potent risk factor for the development of MDD; however, the clinical implications of this finding are not fully understood. METHODS: Participants were adolescents (age 13-21 years) with a diagnosis of moderate-to-severe major depressive disorder and healthy controls. We used generalized linear models to assess the relationship between anhedonia severity and trauma severity in a cross-sectional d

Rethinking trauma in an age of total visibility.

The digital age has transformed the way we experience and respond to traumatic events. Continuous and vicarious exposure to distressing visual content through social media and online news has created new pathways for psychological harm that existing diagnostic frameworks fail to capture. This perspective article examines how digital technologies have blurred the boundaries between direct and indirect trauma, enabling mediated exposure to evoke stress responses comparable to those arising from firsthand experience. Using the October 7, 2023, attacks in Israel as a case study, it explores how th

The trauma of invisibility: Racial microaggressions and psychological distress among Indigenous peoples in Canada.

Racism in Canada systematically marginalizes Indigenous communities, with invisibility emerging as a central mechanism of discrimination. This study examines how racial trauma manifests among Indigenous individuals, focusing on microaggressions, ethnic discrimination, and psychological distress. Invisibility-through erasure of identity, culture, and historical injustices-was a recurring theme in Indigenous experiences of racism, reinforcing exclusion and increasing trauma. A total of 196 Indigenous participants (64% First Nations, 26% Métis, 6% Inuit) across Canada were recruited via an online

Evolution of spinal cord injury treatment in military neurosurgery.

During the mid-1900s, military medicine made historical advancements in the diagnosis, stabilization, and treatment of spinal cord injuries (SCIs). In particular, World War II was an inflection point for clinical practice related to SCIs because of the vast number of devastating injuries to soldiers seen during World War I (WWI). The unprecedented rate of SCI along with growth in the field served as a catalyst for surgical and interdisciplinary advancements through the increased exposure to this challenging pathology. Initially, a tragic fate was assumed for soldiers with SCIs in WWI resulting
