The management of epistaxis is reviewed from ancient times onwards. Many curious methods have been employed and indeed epistaxis has been encouraged at times. Although current management is based on sound principles folklore remedies still predominate amongst some of our patients. The basis of contemporary treatments was known and practised by our ancient forbears.

A review of the history of microscopy shows a period of intense amateur as well as professional interest in light microscopy in the 19th century. In order to accommodate these activities, there developed a group of people who prepared high quality microscopic slides. These slides covered a range of specimens including diatoms, insects, plants, rocks as well as animal and human tissues. Two slides of human scalp that were prepared in the latter half of the 19th century recently became available. They were processed to show both vertically and transversely sectioned skin. The slide of transverse

The retrogastric location, small size and soft consistency of the pancreas were the reason for the late discovery of the physiology of this organ. The first information about the anatomy and physiology of the pancreas appeared only in the 16th-17th centuries. The role of the pancreas in digestion was studied in the 18th-19th centuries, its participation in carbohydrate metabolism - in the 19th century, and insulin was discovered in the first half of the 20th century. Clinical signs of pancreatitis were first described in the early 19th century, but diagnosis of this disease still presents cert

Pseudofractures, lucent bands that occur due to a build-up of osteoid, are a key feature of osteomalacia. In paleopathology, pseudofractures are often marked by small, linear cracks in the cortex of the bone surrounded by irregular, bony spicule formation. Radiography can be used to help diagnose pseudofractures, both clinically and in paleopathology. A detailed understanding of the radiographic appearance of pseudofractures and their development is, therefore, necessary to aid a diagnosis of vitamin D deficiency. The present study examined the clinical literature to determine current ideas on

Medical descriptions of celiac disease date to the first century BC, and the first modern description was published in 1888. Further insights were gained throughout the 1900s, culminating in the identification of the dietary component, the major genetic determinant, and the autoantigen by the turn of the century. Understanding of the age of onset, population prevalence, and the extent of subclinical celiac disease developed in tandem. Thanks to advances in genomics, currently established loci account for over 50 % of the genetic risk. Nonetheless, much remains to be discovered. Advances in hig

Although supplemental enteral nutrition may have first been delivered by enema, the modern era of surgically placed feeding tubes began in the mid to late 1800s. Early procedures were generally disastrous, however, techniques rapidly improved. The basic techniques of surgical enteral access have not changed significantly in the last century, although endoscopic, radiologic and laparoscopic modifications have been described and adopted in the last 25 years. This article reviews some of the landmark surgical highlights in the United States and European literature regarding surgical enteral acces

Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) was long considered a clinical variant of multiple sclerosis (MS). However, the discovery of a novel and pathogenic anti-astrocytic serum autoantibody targeting aquaporin-4 (termed NMO-IgG or AQP4-Ab), the most abundant water channel protein in the central nervous system, led to the recognition of NMO as a distinct disease entity in its own right and generated strong and persisting interest in the condition. NMO is now studied as a prototypic autoimmune disorder, which differs from MS in terms of immunopathogenesis, clinicoradiological presentation, optimum treatment

Biological weapons have been used in war from the start of recorded history. This article reviews the history of the subject, including the outbreak of the Black Death and the use of smallpox against American Indians. The new science of microbiology was misused from soon after its start and, despite the 1925 Geneva Protocol, the Japanese experimented extensively on prisoners in China. The Allies carried out extensive research during the Second World War, notably the United Kingdom into anthrax on Gruinard Island and the United States into a variety of agents. Despite the 1972 Biological Weapon

The history of epilepsy and its treatment in the western world dates back at least 4 millennia to the ancient civilization of the middle east. Past and present treatments have been empirical, usually reflecting the prevailing views of epilepsy, be they medical, theological or superstitious. Ancient physicians relied on clinical observation to distinguish between epileptic syndromes and infer their cause. Early pathophysiological theories of epilepsy correctly identified the brain as the site of the problem, but emphasized incorrect causes such as an excess of phlegm in the brain. Treatments co

The article undertakes a historical analysis of the concepts of psychology, psychiatry and psychotherapy, assuming that, despite current institutional differences, they share a common interest in the soul or mind. The aim of this paper is to present an alternative path for the development of psychotherapy as a practical continuation of the concept of psychologia anthropologica introduced by Otto Casmann in the late 16th century. The text traces the conceptual evolution from the first appearances of the term Psychologia, Otto Casmann's two-volume treatise (Psychologia anthropologica, 1594, 1596

Of all achievements in medicine, the successful treatment of tuberculosis has had one of the greatest impacts on society. Tuberculosis was a leading cause of disease and a mortal enemy of humanity for millennia. The first step in finding a cure was the discovery of the cause of tuberculosis by Robert Koch in 1882. The sanatorium movement that began shortly afterward in Europe, and soon spread to the United States, brought attention to the plight of afflicted persons, and catalyzed public health action. The antituberculosis benefit of streptomycin was announced in 1945, although application was

With its unexpected and relentless staging of verbal rather than physical violence, Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida reveals a deep engagement with late-Tudor conflicts over the appropriate uses of satiric discourse in the public field. In particular, the play reimagines the aggressive response of magistrates who seek to control and recast various species of abusive language, thereby politicizing the “sportive malice” enacted in the subplots of Shakespeare's late comedies. No—where is this official manipulation of satirical voices more insistent—and ultimately destabilizing—than in the libel

INTRODUCTION: The history of surgical spina bifida repair has seen many successes and failures. Many early surgeons attempted treatment of open spina bifida defects before a clear understanding of the disease process or pathology had been discovered.
CONCLUSIONS: The attempts, while often fruitless, served to better our understanding of the disease and represent stepping-stones to the treatment we successfully use today. The present paper reviews the history of the surgical treatment of myelomeningoceles.

Since Stalpert von der Wiel first incised the abdominal wall for bile drainage in a patient with an intraabdominal abscess due to gangrenous cholecystitis with calculi in 1684, the problems inherent in the treatment of cholelithisiasis have received attention from surgeons working in this field. However, the major event was the development of the technique of cholecystectomy by Langenbuch in 1882 opening a new era in surgery for cholelithiasis. Subsequently numerous advances were made in cholecystectomy, choledochotomy, choledochoenterostomy, and sphincteroplasty associated with progress in th

A short review of the beginnings of virology is presented, when Beijerinck formulated his concept of a new category of disease agents in plants. With the discovery of similar etiologies in diseases of animals (foot-and-mouth disease) and humans (yellow fever), the universality of this concept emerged and the discipline of virology was born.

The paper starts with a historical reflection on the region and on famous scientific personalities which worked up parasitological problems on the territory of East Germany. Native scientists like J. L. Frisch, C. A. Rudolphi, R. Leuckart, A. C. Gerlach, R. Virchow, R. Koch, R. von Ostertag, W. Nöller, R. Wetzel made in fundamental contributions to the growth of knowledge in General and Special Parasitology. The parasitological institutions existing in East Germany are represented briefly. The parasitologists of East Germany, nearly 160,--biologists, physicians and veterinarians--among them mo
