Assessment of Home-Based and Mobility-Based Exposure to Black Carbon in an Urban Environment: A Pilot Study.

The combustion of fossil fuels is a significant source of particulate-bound black carbon (BC) in urban environments. The personal exposure (PE) of urban dwellers to BC and subsequent health impacts remain poorly understood due to a lack of observational data. In this study, we assessed and quantified the levels of PE to BC under two exposure scenarios (home-based and mobility-based exposure) in the city of Trivandrum in India. In the home-based scenario, the PE to BC was assessed in a naturally ventilated building over 24 h each day during the study period while in the mobility-based scenario,

Associations between adverse home environments and appetite hormones, adipokines, and adiposity among Chilean adolescents.

Little is known regarding the relationship between adverse home environments and hormones important in regulation of appetite and their impact on obesity in children and adolescents. In this study, we examined the impact of socioeconomic economic status, family stress and maternal depressive symptoms on appetite hormones, adipokines and adiposity. To determine whether adverse home environments in childhood and adolescence relate to adiposity in adolescence and disruptions in appetite hormones and adipokines, specifically lower levels of adiponectin and ghrelin and elevated levels of leptin and

Long-term effects of the home literacy environment on reading development: Familial risk for dyslexia as a moderator.

This study aimed to gain better understanding of the associations between literacy activities at home and long-term language and literacy development. We extended the home literacy environment (HLE) model of Sénéchal and LeFevre (Child Development [2002], Vol. 73, pp. 445-460) by including repeated assessments of shared reading, oral language, and reading comprehension development, including examination of familial risk for dyslexia as a moderator, and following development over time from ages 2 to 15 years. Of the 198 Finnish participants, 106 have familial risk for dyslexia due to parental d

Concurrent and longitudinal associations between the Home Literacy Environment and the language skills of children with Down syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Substantial research demonstrates a positive association between the Home Literacy Environment (HLE) and vocabulary growth in typically developing (TD) children (Lovčević, 2025). Though few studies have explored this in children with Down syndrome (DS), limited evidence suggests that an enriched HLE also promotes receptive vocabulary growth in this population (Dulin et al., 2023). However, the extent to which the HLE influences expressive vocabulary development within this population remains unclear (Dulin et al., 2023). RESEARCH QUESTIONS: (1) How do parent(s) of children with

Characterization and cancer risk assessment of VOCs in home and school environments in gran La Plata, Argentina.

Three areas are highlighted in Gran La Plata, Argentina: industrial, urban, and residential. In this work, the levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in indoor air of homes and schools in those areas were analyzed, through the use of passive monitors. The study period is between 2007 and 2010. Higher levels of VOCs were found in homes and schools in the industrial zone, higher than the levels corresponding to urban and residential. Taking into account the relationship between indoor and outdoor levels of VOCs, they have ratios (I/O) between 1.5 and 10 are evidenced contributions of emissi

Predictors of externalizing behavior problems in early elementary-aged children: the role of family and home environments.

As children enter elementary school they display behavioral orientations that reveal potential developmental trajectories. Developmental transitions offer unique opportunities for examining developmental pathways and the factors that influence emerging pathways. The primary goal of this investigation was to examine characteristics of family and home contexts in predicting externalizing behavior problems among children transitioning into elementary school. Dimensions of the family and home environments of maltreated and nonmaltreated children (N = 177) were examined and used to predict external

Balancing normalcy and safety: health-related needs in patients with a ventricular assist device within their home environment.

AIMS: Ventricular assist device (VAD) implantation has become a well-established treatment strategy for patients suffering from advanced heart failure. Ventricular assist device treatment attempts to ameliorate the symptom burden but may create new challenges in patients' lives. Lacking are insights into perceived challenges and health-related needs of patients with VAD within their home environment. Our study aimed to explore the perceived health-related needs of patients living with a VAD in their home environment. METHODS AND RESULTS: We used a qualitative approach based on a hermeneutic,

A Wearable In-home Tremor Assessment System via Virtual Reality Environment for the Activities in Daily Lives (ADLs).

Currently available diagnostic methods for tremor movements are mostly subjective measurements, and clinicians and researchers typically diagnose patients' symptoms with provocative maneuvers, and the inter-rater and intra-rater variabilities of those methods have been always reported. Even though various sensor-based quantitative approaches have been explored, most of the tools are limited to the tremor metrics (i.e., severity and frequency). A consistent environment that can provide a test setup to evaluate how their performance is affected by the tremor movement for activities of daily livi

Atopy, home environment and the risk of childhood-onset type 1 diabetes: a population-based case-control study.

Neonatal hypoxia-ischemia (HI) is one of the main factors that cause neonatal severe neurologic impairment and death. Shown by a large number of studies, caspase-1 plays a significant effect in diseases such as hypoxic-ischemic brain damage (HIBD) and may be a key component of the protein complex that initiates PANoptosis. VX-765, an inhibitor of caspase-1, exerts a potential neuroprotective effect in traumatic brain injury. However, it is unknown whether the administration of VX-765 has neuroprotective effects on neonatal rats that suffered HIBD, and if so, the underlying mechanisms are also

A Transferable Lidar-Based Method to Conduct Contactless Assessments of Gait Parameters in Diverse Home-like Environments.

Gait abnormalities in older adults are linked to increased risks of falls, institutionalization, and mortality, necessitating accurate and frequent gait assessments beyond traditional clinical settings. Current methods, such as pressure-sensitive walkways, often lack the continuous natural environment monitoring needed to understand an individual's gait fully during their daily activities. To address this gap, we present a Lidar-based method capable of unobtrusively and continuously tracking human leg movements in diverse home-like environments, aiming to match the accuracy of a clinical refer

Assessment of the Microbial Constituents of the Home Environment of Individuals with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and Their Association with Lower Airways Infections.

INTRODUCTION: Cystic fibrosis (CF) airways are colonized by a polymicrobial community of organisms, termed the CF microbiota. We sought to define the microbial constituents of the home environment of individuals with CF and determine if it may serve as a latent reservoir for infection. METHODS: Six patients with newly identified CF pathogens were included. An investigator collected repeat sputum and multiple environmental samples from their homes. Bacteria were cultured under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Morphologically distinct colonies were selected, purified and identified to the
