Positive psychology concepts and principles can be incorporated into preparedness, crisis response, and recovery phases of disaster mental health efforts to address the needs of children, adolescents, and families. This article articulates general developmental considerations for applying positive psychology in disaster mental health contexts and discusses how 5 essential elements of immediate and midterm mass trauma intervention identified by Hobfoll et al. (2007) may be infused in applications of positive psychology for children and adolescents. Specific strategies for working with children,

Canada's approach to shared decision making (SDM) remains as disparate as its healthcare system; a conglomerate of 14 public plans - ten provincial, three territorial and one federal. The healthcare research funding environment has been largely positive for SDM because there was funding for knowledge translation research which also encompassed SDM. The funding climate currently places new emphasis on patient involvement in research and on patient empowerment in healthcare. SDM fields have expanded from primary care to elder care, paediatrics, emergency and critical care medicine, cardiology, n

As the USA faces a worsening overdose crisis, improving access to evidence-based treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD) remains a policy priority. Federal regulatory changes in response to the COVID-19 pandemic substantially expanded flexibilities on take-home doses for methadone treatment for OUD. These changes have fuelled questions about the effect of new regulations on OUD outcomes and the potential effect on health of permanently integrating these flexibilities into treatment policy going forward. To aide US policy makers as they consider implementing permanent methadone regulatory chang

BACKGROUND: Population aging presents major health challenges globally, including in Tamil Nadu. The World Health Organisation’s ICOPE framework emphasizes maintaining intrinsic capacity through detailed, person-centered assessments. However, Step 2 evaluations remain underutilized here, critical for understanding older adults’ functional health. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to fill that gap by providing vital data to improve geriatric care and promote healthy aging locally. To evaluate intrinsic capacity across various domains (e.g., cognition, psychological health, mobility, sensory abilities,

Sexual promiscuity often is part of the lifestyle of teenagers who are delinquent and abuse drugs, and that behavior puts them at increased risk of contracting HIV infection/AIDS. Many of these juveniles are runaways or live in disorganized homes, and as a result they are hard to reach and it is extremely difficult to provide health and other services to them. Indeed, these youths at risk most frequently may be identified and helped when they run afoul of the law and enter the judicial system. With that in mind, concerned professionals in San Antonio have developed an innovative program to pro

Community home-based HIV/AIDS programs with care facilitators (CFs) are key interventions for dealing with both the shortage of health professionals (e.g., physicians, nurses, midwives, etc.) and the current HIV/AIDS epidemic in many parts of Africa. Zimbabwe, one of the sub-Saharan countries is not an exception. The Zimbabwe Red Cross Society started a community home-based HIV/AIDS program with CFs in 1992. This paper describes the results of a cross-sectional study conducted to examine the factors influencing the motivational outcome and self-assessed performance of CFs from one province inv

Digital health is becoming more integrated in daily medical practice. In cardiology, patient care is already moving from the hospital to the patients' homes, with large trials showing positive results in the field of telemonitoring via cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs), monitoring of pulmonary artery pressure via implantable devices, telemonitoring via home-based non-invasive sensors, and screening for atrial fibrillation via smartphone and smartwatch technology. Cardiac rehabilitation and secondary prevention are modalities that could greatly benefit from digital health integrati

This article presents a profile of household-resident U.S. adults using wheeled mobility equipment (WME) in 2005, trends in WME use from 1990 to 2005, and data on accessibility features and problems from 1994-97. Data were obtained from the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) and the National Health Interview Survey on Disability (NHIS-D). Compared to the general population, WME users are more likely to be older, female, and in poor health. Forty-four percent are working-aged, with twice the rate of poverty of the general population, and only 17% are employed. Mobility difficulty

INTRODUCTION: Many individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD) live alone, and this figure is expected to increase. This study aimed to describe the cognitive and functional abilities of solitary-living AD patients, and the potential predictors of their usage of community-based services.
METHODS: This 3-year, prospective, multicenter study included 1,021 participants with mild-to-moderate AD (Mini-Mental State Examination score, 10-26) treated with a cholinesterase inhibitor in a routine clinical setting. At baseline and every 6 months, patients were assessed using cognitive, instrumental, and

BACKGROUND: Pressure ulcers are areas of localised damage to the skin and underlying tissue; and can cause pain, immobility, and delay recovery, impacting on health-related quality of life. The individuals who are most at risk of developing a pressure ulcer are those who are seriously ill, elderly, have impaired mobility and/or poor nutrition; thus, many nursing home residents are at risk.
OBJECTIVES: To understand the context of pressure ulcer prevention in nursing homes and to explore the potential barriers and facilitators to evidence-informed practices.
METHODS: Semi-structured interview

BACKGROUND: Unintentional injury is the leading cause of preventable death of children over the age of 1 year in the UK and a major cause of attendance at emergency departments. Children having one injury are at increased risk of further injuries. Parenting programmes can reduce injuries in preschool children if delivered in the home and on a one-to-one basis. It is not known if group-based programmes delivered outside the home are effective.
OBJECTIVES: To develop (1) a parenting programme to prevent recurrent unintentional home injuries in preschool children and (2) a tool for parents to re

The foster home care system is the most commonly used alternative for the care of dependent children in the United States. However, it often fails to achieve its objective of returning the child to his home or providing a permanent substitute family. Children entering foster care have frequently suffered social, emotional, and medical neglect, and physical abuse. They have a high rate of chronic medical problems, educational handicaps, and severe emotional impairment. In many cases the health care that foster children receive fails to recognize and/or adequately address their disabilities. In

Ventricular assist device treatment attempts to ameliorate the symptom burden but may create new challenges in patients' lives. Lacking are insights into perceived challenges and health-related needs of patients with VAD within their home environment. Our study aimed to explore the perceived health-related needs of patients living with a VAD in their home environment.

This rule adopts as final a proposed rule of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to amend its regulations concerning the provision of health care to birth children of Vietnam veterans and veterans of covered service in Korea diagnosed with spina bifida, except for spina bifida occulta, and certain other birth defects. In the proposed rule published on May 15, 2015, VA proposed changes to more clearly define the types of health care VA provides, including day health care and health-related services, which we defined as homemaker or home health aide services that provide assistance with Acti

To develop effective school-based programs to prevent the spread of AIDS, programmers must apply principles related to learning and behavior change. Due to the complexity of influencing contemporary adolescent sexual behavior, a multidisciplinary approach using multiple intervention strategies is essential. Health promotion efforts should include policy mandates, direct intervention, instruction, environmental support, media, role modeling, and social support. Consistent, continuous messages through multiple channels (school, home, community, and media) and by multiple agents (parents, peers,

Information presented regards the consumption of resources in the management of critically ill patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Predictions are made about future increases in critical care services for patients with this condition. While increased need will primarily be related to an increased number of patients with AIDS, an expanded need for critical care services is also likely to result from changes in the populations at risk and in the presentation of the syndrome. In particular, the relationship between the AIDS epidemic and tuberculosis is described. The bala

Despite the steady decline of smoking rates in California, over 200,000 children under age 12 live in homes where smoking is allowed, and another 742,000 live with an adult or adolescent smoker. Significant differences in children's exposure to tobacco smoke and risk of exposure are found by race/ethnicity, geographic regions within the state and by poverty level. African-American children were found to have a significantly higher rate of exposure than other racial and ethnic groups, while children in the Northern/Sierra and San Joaquin Valley regions were at the highest risk of exposure to se

BACKGROUND: The main aim of this study is to investigate the connection between a high workload and health-related quality of life among in-home care workers in northern Sweden during the COVID-19 pandemic. We also investigate whether social support and control at work can prevent poor health due to high workload.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted during the pandemic, with 629 (response rate 33 per cent) of an estimated 1,900 in-home care workers responding. Results were compared with a nearly identical survey conducted prior to the pandemic in which 1,154 (response rate 58 per
