The use of slow or rapid, subcutaneous, IgG (SCIG) infusions in pregnant women with primary antibody deficiencies has been described earlier, though only in single-case reports. In this study, we have evaluated the effect of rapid, SCIG infusions during 11 pregnancies in nine women [six women with common variable immunodeficiency (CVID), two with IgG-subclass deficiencies, and one with combined IgA and IgG2 deficiency]. The weekly infusions were given by the women themselves at a dose of 100 mg/kg/week throughout the pregnancy. No adverse systemic reactions or pronounced, local tissue reaction

BACKGROUND: The recently published guidelines of the Spanish Society of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery encourage physicians to use outpatient antimicrobial therapy to treat exacerbations in patients with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (NCFB). The published literature on this topic, however, is scarce.
METHODS: We report a prospective observational cohort study of patients with NCFB who received treatment at home for at least one exacerbation episode between September 2012 and September 2017 as part of an outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) program. Patients were included

The thymus is the main immune organ in the body. However, the thymus gradually degenerates in early life, leading to a reduction in T-cell production and a decrease in immune function. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a promising alternative for the treatment of thymus senescence due to their homing ability to the site of inflammation and their paracrine, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. However, the heterogeneity, difficulty of survival in vivo, short residence time, and low homing efficiency of the injected MSCs affect the clinical therapeutic effect. This article reviews stra

Carbon dioxide (CO2) therapy is the subcutaneous or transcutaneous administration of CO2 for therapeutic purposes. Carbon dioxide therapy is used for localized lipolysis, to treat chronic skin conditions, and is a safe treatment. Full-body CO2 baths are offered in European spa centers, in which the clients are placed into full body bags infused with CO2 at an optimal concentration range between 1000 and 1400 mg/L (516 000-722 500 ppm). Commercially manufactured, air-tight bags and accompanying apparatus designed to provide CO2 baths can be purchased for home use. Few human CO2-related deaths h

There has been a surging interest in using elastomeric infusion devices to deliver outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT), which is more cost-effective than standard antibiotic administration, which requires multiple daily home visits. This has been particularly important since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, because reducing patient contact can also help to minimise transmission of COVID-19 to outpatients who are at a high risk of COVID-19-triggered complications. In this retrospective study, the clinical effectiveness of intravenous (IV) infusion of flucloxacillin using

Rhabdomyolysis is diagnosed with creatinine kinase (CK) elevation beyond 1000 U/L or ten times above the normal upper limit. Severe episodes can be fatal from electrolyte imbalance, acute renal failure, and disseminated intravascular coagulation. A 13-month-old child was admitted with a CK of 82,090 U/L in the setting of respiratory tract infection-related hyperthermia of 106.9° farenheit. His medical history was significant for prematurity, dystonia, and recurrent rhabdomyolysis. His home medications clonazepam, clonidine, and baclofen were continued upon admission. He exhibited uncontrolled

INTRODUCTION/SIGNIFICANCE/POPULATION: Research has failed to demonstrate an optimal flushing solution or frequency for central catheters. In a 2002 study of 50 000 home care patients, catheter dysfunction with loss of patency was the most common complication and occurred in 29% of the peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) tracked. With the advent of the Affordable Care Act and the promise of expanded home care services, this study offers evidence as to a preferred flushing protocol to prevent catheter patency complications for home infusion patients with PICCs.
METHODS: This prospec

Therapy with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) is promising in many diseases. Evaluation of their efficacy depends on adequate follow-up of MSCs after transplantation. Several studies have shown that MSCs can be labeled and subsequently visualized with magnetic nanoparticles (NPs). We investigated the homing of MSCs labeled with magnetic cobalt ferrite NPs in experimentally induced acute kidney injury in mice. To explore the homing of MSCs after systemic infusion into mice, we developed a pre-infusion strategy for optimal tracing and identification of MSCs with polyacrylic acid-coated cobalt ferri

BACKGROUND: Home parenteral nutrition is a life-sustaining therapy for patients with chronic intestinal failure, increasingly delivered in the home setting worldwide. While home parenteral nutrition supports nutritional status, survival, and functional independence, it also transfers complex clinical responsibilities to patients and family caregivers, raising concerns about care quality and safety. This study aimed to explore patients' and primary caregivers' experiences of home parenteral nutrition and to identify structural, process-related, and outcome-related factors influencing care quali

Between 1975 and 1990, a total of 34 patients with water intoxication were treated at St Louis (Mo) Children's Hospital, 24 of these in the last 3 years, indicating a marked increase in incidence of this previously rare condition. Thirty-one were infants living in poverty who ingested excessive amounts of water offered at home by their caretakers. Exhaustion of the supply of infant formula was the most common reason given for this substitution. Infants were treated by a single infusion of hypertonic saline or a slow infusion of isotonic saline. Central pontine myelinolysis was not observed as

BACKGROUND: Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are among the most extensively studied candidates for cell-based therapy. The homing capacity of MSCs is a critical factor influencing the efficacy of MSC-based therapies. This study aimed to investigate the homing of placenta-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (PD-MSCs) in various damaged tissues of immunodeficient Cg-PrkdcscidIl2rgtm1Sug/ShiJic (NOG) mice in response to total body irradiation (TBI).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: NOG mice were irradiated with 3.5 Gy. PD-MSCs were isolated, characterized, and transduced with green fluorescent protein (GFP)
