Heat conduction from the exceedingly hot fiber tip contributes to the endovenous laser ablation of varicose veins.

Lower-extremity venous insufficiency is a common condition, associated with considerable health care costs. Endovenous laser ablation is increasingly used as therapy, but its mechanism of action is insufficiently understood. Here, direct absorption of the laser light, collapsing steam bubbles and direct fiber-wall contact have all been mentioned as contributing mechanisms. Because fiber tips have reported temperatures of 800-1,300 degrees C during endovenous laser ablation, we sought to assess whether heat conduction from the hot tip could cause irreversible thermal injury to the venous wall.

Heat stress and acclimation.

Heat stress reduces the capability for sustained exercise. On the other hand, with repeated exposures to hot environments, exhaustion is delayed. This paper examines the hypothesis that high core temperature might be the ultimate cause of the fatigue and inability to continue to exercise in hot dry environmental conditions. It is suggested that a high core temperature is the ultimate cause of fatigue due to heat stress.

Using Dermal Temperature to Identify Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients With Radiologic Progressive Disease in Less Than One Minute.

OBJECTIVE: To explore development of a screening test for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients most likely to develop radiographic damage in the next year. The test is a simple, objective measurement of elevated dermal temperature over an inflamed joint in this observational, prospective cohort study. METHODS: Seropositive RA patients were sequentially enrolled into cohorts with hot or cool joints, as determined by a dermal thermometer. Patients naive to biologic therapy were maintained on a stable dosage of methotrexate (20-25 mg/week). The hot-joint cohort had a joint skin temperature greater

Regional differences in sweat rate response of steers to short-term heat stress.

Six Angus steers (319 +/- 8.5 kg) were assigned to one of two groups (hot or cold exposure) of three steers each, and placed into two environmental chambers initially maintained at 16.5-18.8 degrees C air temperature (Ta). Cold chamber Ta was lowered to 8.4 degrees C, while Ta within the hot chamber was increased to 32.7 degrees C over a 24-h time period. Measurements included respiration rate, and air and body (rectal and skin) temperatures. Skin temperature was measured at shoulder and rump locations, with determination of sweat rate using a calibrated moisture sensor. Rectal temperature did

Neurokinin B administration induces hot flushes in women.

Neurokinin B (NKB) is a hypothalamic neuropeptide binding preferentially to the neurokinin 3 receptor. Expression of the gene encoding NKB is elevated in postmenopausal women. Furthermore, rodent studies suggest that NKB signalling may mediate menopausal hot flushes. However, the effects of NKB administration on hot flushes have not been investigated in humans. To address this, we performed a randomised, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, 2-way cross-over study. Ten healthy women were admitted to a temperature and humidity-controlled research unit. Participants received 30 minute intravenous

How free-ranging ungulates with differing water dependencies cope with seasonal variation in temperature and aridity.

Large mammals respond to seasonal changes in temperature and precipitation by behavioural and physiological flexibility. These responses are likely to differ between species with differing water dependencies. We used biologgers to contrast the seasonal differences in activity patterns, microclimate selection, distance to potential water source and body temperature of the water-independent gemsbok (Oryx gazella gazella) and water-dependent blue wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus), free-living in the arid Kalahari region of Botswana. Gemsbok were more active nocturnally during the hot seasons tha

Effect of temperature on cosolvent flooding for the enhanced solubilization and mobilization of NAPLs in porous media.

This paper examines the potential for enhanced NAPL recovery from the subsurface through the combined application of hot water and cosolvent flushing. Batch experiments were conducted to determine the effect of temperature on fluid properties and the multiphase behavior of the ethanol-water-toluene system and to assess the impact of temperature on the capillary, Bond and total trapping numbers and on flooding stability. Column flooding experiments were also conducted to evaluate toluene NAPL recovery efficiency for different ethanol contents and flushing solution temperatures. The ethanol cont

Brain hyperthermia alters local cerebral glucose utilization: a comparison of hyperthermic agents.

Microwaves have been proposed to alter neural functioning through both thermal and non-thermal mechanisms. We attempted to determine if local cerebral glucose utilization (LCGU) depends on the type of hyperthermic agent employed. We exposed the heads of rats to two different hyperthermic agents (5.6 GHz microwave exposure or exposure to hot/moist air) to create a 2 degree C rise in midbrain temperature. Other rats were sham exposed and remained normothermic. The 2-Deoxy-D-glucose (2DG) autoradiographic method was then used to determine LCGU during a 45-min period of stable hyperthermia. Hypert

Influence of brain catecholamines on the development of fatigue in exercising rats in the heat.

The purpose of the present study was to identify the effects of an acute injection of a dual dopamine (DA)/noradrenaline (NA) reuptake inhibitor (bupropion) on exercise performance, thermoregulation and neurotransmitters in the preoptic area and anterior hypothalamus (PO/AH) of the rat during exercise in the heat. Body core temperature (T(core)), brain temperature (T(brain)) and tail skin temperature (T(tail)) were measured. A microdialysis probe was inserted in the PO/AH, and samples for measurement of extracellular DA, NA and serotonin (5-HT) levels were collected. Rats received either bupro

Indicators of low legionella colonization in Danish primary schools and approaches to minimise infection risks.

Legionella in hot water systems poses significant health risk from infections. Standard preventive measures are high water temperatures and regular water flow, which conflict with the goals of sustainable energy and water use. In 2025, 22 primary schools in the Danish Capital Region were re-investigated for the presence of Legionella and for characteristics of hot water systems. The aim is to identify characteristics for hot water systems that are associated with low vs high Legionella colonization. The results show that the average Legionella concentrations in the A and B samples had decrease

Combining heat stress and moderate hypoxia reduces cycling time to exhaustion without modifying neuromuscular fatigue characteristics.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the isolated and combined effects of heat [temperate (22 °C/30 % rH) vs. hot (35 °C/40 % rH)] and hypoxia [sea level (FiO2 0.21) vs. moderate altitude (FiO2 0.15)] on exercise capacity and neuromuscular fatigue characteristics. METHODS: Eleven physically active subjects cycled to exhaustion at constant workload (66 % of the power output associated with their maximal oxygen uptake in temperate conditions) in four different environmental conditions [temperate/sea level (control), hot/sea level (hot), temperate/moderate altitude (hypoxia) and hot/moderate altitud

Potential Association of Legionnaires' Disease with Hot Spring Water, Hot Springs National Park and Hot Springs, Arkansas, USA, 2018-2019.

Legionella pneumophila is the cause of Legionnaires' disease, a life-threatening pneumonia that occurs after inhalation of aerosolized water containing the bacteria. Legionella growth occurs in stagnant, warm-to-hot water (77°F-113°F) that is inadequately disinfected. Piped hot spring water in Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas, USA, has naturally high temperatures (>135°F) that prevent Legionella growth, and Legionnaires' disease has not previously been associated with the park or other hot springs in the United States. During 2018-2019, Legionnaires' disease occurred in 5 persons after they

A 5-Year Review of Pavement Burns From a Desert Burn Center.

Pavement burns account for significant burn-related injuries in the Southwestern United States and other hot climates with nearly continuous sunlight and daily maximum temperatures above 100°F. At peak temperatures, pavement can be hot enough to cause second-degree burns in a matter of seconds. The goal of this study was to review pavement burn injury admissions at a desert burn center compared with maximum ambient temperatures to determine which temperatures correlated to an increase in burn admissions. We obtained ambient temperature data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrat

The influence of serial feeding of drinks at different temperatures on thermoregulatory responses during cycling.

In this study, we examined thermoregulatory responses to ingestion of separate aliquots of drinks at different temperatures during low-intensity exercise in conditions of moderate heat stress. Eight men cycled at 50% (s = 3) of their peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) for 90 min (dry bulb temperature: 25.3 degrees C, s = 0.5; relative humidity: 60%, s = 5). Four 400-ml aliquots of flavoured water at 10 degrees C (cold), 37 degrees C (warm) or 50 degrees C (hot) were ingested after 30, 45, 60, and 75 min of exercise. Immediately after the 90 min of exercise, participants cycled at 95% VO2peak to exha

Higher growth temperatures compound heatwave recovery of photosynthesis in different populations of Corymbia calophylla.

Global temperature rise is leading to increased stress and mortality in forests globally and is driving more frequent and intense heatwaves; however, the interaction between growth temperatures and heatwave events on tree populations remains poorly understood. We aimed to determine if gas exchange performance during and after heatwaves was determined by growth temperature, climate origin, and heatwave intensity in Corymbia calophylla saplings from four contrasting temperature-rainfall climate regions. Saplings were grown under warm and cool growth temperatures and exposed to a moderate or extr

Revisiting the mystery of temperature-induced degradation of amyloid seeds under dry conditions: A comparative study on two structural variants of insulin fibrils.

The remarkable thermodynamic stability of amyloid fibrils is paralleled by their heat-tolerance, which is also thought to underlie the resistance of prion infectivity to high temperatures. Here, we studied heat-stability of two structural variants of insulin fibrils: one formed in acidified aqueous solutions and the other formed in the presence of acetone. While heating under a dry N2 atmosphere leads to the release of water before the temperature reaches 120 °C, this process is not accompanied by changes in the secondary structure of fibrils, as judged by IR spectroscopy, or in their ability
