Perceptions of Housing and Shelter among People with Histories of Unstable Housing in three Cities in Canada: A Qualitative Study.

Housing is a key social determinant of health that contributes to the well-documented relationship between socioeconomic status and health. This study explored how individuals with histories of unstable and precarious housing perceive their housing or shelter situations, and the impact of these settings on their health and well-being. Participants were recruited from the Health and Housing in Transition study (HHiT), a longitudinal, multi-city study that tracked the health and housing status of people with unstable housing histories over a 5-year period. For the current study, one-time semi-st

Public housing agency preferences for the homeless as a policy lever: Examining county-level housing subsidy receipt and maltreatment rates.

This study examines the relationship between county Public Housing Agency (PHA) practices that prioritize families experiencing homelessness and county-level child maltreatment rates. Using data from a survey of PHAs and the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System (NCANDS) with a sample of 534 counties, we find that policies which give preference to homeless households for housing assistance are associated with reduced victimization and substantiation rates, while policies that reduce barriers to assistance eligibility are associated with reporting rates. Our findings suggest that beyond

Haunted houses: Using photovoice to understand emotional geographies in single room occupancy housing.

Past research has attempted to illuminate the lived experiences of structurally vulnerable people who use drugs (PWUD) living in single room occupancy (SRO) housing, demonstrating how vulnerabilities to health and social harms are shaped by intersecting social, structural, and spatial forces. However, less attention has been paid to affective dynamics in SROs. Drawing on emotional geographies and theories of haunting, this study examines how emotional experiences of place-especially related to fear, anxiety, and isolation-structure daily life in SROs in Vancouver, Canada, situating these dynam

Vaginal Microbiota Diversity in Response to Lipopolysaccharide in Gilts Housed Under Three Housing Systems.

The United Kingdom and European Union have banned crates for pregnant sows. However, animals are kept in a restrictive environment for up to four weeks after mating, leading to stress and different responses of the animals' immune system. Here, we used vaginal flushing of gilts to investigate whether housing systems or an experimental inflammatory challenge with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) can modify the gilt vaginal microbiome. Alpha-diversity indices showed differences in the microbiota of gilts housed under different systems (q = 0.04). Shannon alpha-diversity richness was higher in gilts grou

House of healing, house of disrespect: a Kantian perspective on disrespectful behaviour among hospital workers.

Respect toward patients is one of the most fundamental and central tenets guiding both modern bioethical practice and the everyday behaviour of all healthcare professionals. However, similar courtesy and respect is often breached in day-to-day interactions between hospital workers. Many examples are relatively minor, while egregious examples such as gender discrimination and physical abuse do occur. The more egregious transgressions may be handled by formal processes, even legal proceedings. However, the innumerable smaller examples of disrespectful behaviour are ubiquitous and insidious in th

The Melbourne house dust mite study: eliminating house dust mites in the domestic environment.

BACKGROUND: Hypersensitivity to house dust mite allergens is associated with increased asthma morbidity. Asthma severity appears to be related to the degree of mite allergen exposure. Short-term studies suggest that complete avoidance reduces disease severity. OBJECTIVE: The study was designed to assess the effect of different mattress covers and floor coverings on mite allergen concentrations in the homes of mite-sensitive children with asthma in the city of Melbourne, Australia. METHODS: Mite allergen Der p 1 concentration was measured on mattress covers, mattress surfaces, and carpeted an

Reasons for Leaving Sober Living Houses and Their Associations with Substance Use, Psychiatric, and Housing Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Sober living houses (SLHs) offer abstinence-based housing for individuals with alcohol or drug problems. Research shows residents of SLHs make improvements on measures of substance use and other problems. Length of stay (LOS) in the house is associated with outcomes. However, little is known about the reasons residents leave houses or how reasons are associated with outcomes. METHODS: Baseline interviews were conducted with individuals entering 48 SLHs in Los Angeles. Residents who left within 12 months completed a 12-month follow-up interview (N = 352) assessing reasons they left

Serum cortisol concentrations of single-housed and isosexually pair-housed adult rhesus macaques.

Possible social distress was evaluated in 20 adult rhesus macaques housed in compatible isosexual pairs (5 female pairs, 5 male pairs) for the purpose of social environmental enrichment. Serum cortisol concentrations of paired animals were compared with serum cortisol concentrations of individually housed adult rhesus macaques of both sexes (5 females, 5 males). In both sexes, cortisol concentrations of paired animals (means 10 females = 19.5 +/- 2.9 micrograms/dl; means 10 males = 17.5 +/- 4.6 micrograms/dl) showed no significant difference (p always greater than 0.1) with those of single ani

Housing characteristics of older adults with cognitive impairment.

INTRODUCTION: Older adults with cognitive impairment (CI) face challenges to aging in the community. Little is known about the housing characteristics of US older adults with CI. METHODS: Using the 2022 National Health and Aging Trends Study, we describe housing characteristics of community-living older adults ≥ 65 years with CI (n = 968) using descriptive statistics (frequencies) and conduct chi-squared tests to compare characteristics of those who lived with others (n = 707) versus alone (n = 261). RESULTS: Renting (41%), home modifications (59% had ≥ 2), and interior home disorder (45%) w

'Fighting him': Following distress in hostile housing regimes.

This study explores the psychological impacts of the UK housing crisis among a collective of Somali women in Birmingham. We build a framework from anthropological theories of social distress, applied through a participatory methodology consisting of housing biographies and therapeutic workshops. Research was conducted between June 2022-December 2023. Our findings reveal the cumulative forms of distress generated through poor housing, eviction and placement in temporary forms of accommodation. Such distress was articulated in multiple genres which spanned somatic, social reproductive, bureaucra

HOUSING TEMPERATURE ALTERS BURN-INDUCED HYPERMETABOLISM IN MICE.

Mice used in biomedical research are typically housed at ambient temperatures (22°C-24°C) below thermoneutrality (26°C-31°C). This chronic cold stress triggers a hypermetabolic response that may limit the utility of mice in modeling hypermetabolism in response to burns. To evaluate the effect of housing temperature on burn-induced hypermetabolism, mice were randomly assigned to receive sham, small, or large scald burns. Mice recovered for 21 days in metabolic phenotyping cages at 24°C or 30°C. Regardless of sex or sham/burn treatment, mice housed at 24°C had greater total energy expenditure (

Healthcare Utilization Among Children Receiving Permanent Supportive Housing.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Permanent supportive housing (PSH) integrates long-term housing and supports for families and individuals experiencing homelessness. Although PSH is frequently provided to families with children, little is known about the impacts of PSH among children. We examined changes in health care visits among children receiving PSH compared with similar children who did not receive PSH. METHODS: We analyzed Pennsylvania Medicaid administrative data for children entering PSH between 2011 and 2016, matching to a comparison cohort with similar demographic and clinical characteri

Inadequate housing and pulmonary tuberculosis: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is a global health issue that has long threatened and continues to threaten human health. While previous studies are important in the search for a cure for TB, to eradicate the disease it is also crucial to analyze environmental influences. Therefore, this study determined the potential effect of inadequate housing on TB and the magnitude of the effect. METHODS: This is a systematic review of the effects of inadequate housing on TB. Between Jan 1, 2011 and Oct 25, 2020, we searched four electronic databases using the search terms "housing AND tuberculosis" or "ho

Development and validation of the housing instability scale.

Despite increasing attention to the importance of examining factors that impact housing instability and homelessness, the field lacks a validated scale of housing instability. The current study examined the reliability and validity of a seven-item scale that measures housing instability. Data were taken from a larger study which implemented the Domestic Violence Housing First model across five domestic violence agencies in the Pacific Northwest. A total of 406 participants were interviewed every six months over a period of two years. A Spanish version of the scale was administered to Spanish-s

How Housing Conditions Determine the Welfare of Pigs.

Humans who care for pigs prefer an environment that not only allows the pigs to express their natural behaviors but also limits the development of aggression and stereotypes. Most of the behavioral and health problems encountered by pigs in barren, conventional conditions are solved by alternative housing systems. However, it is not known whether these systems are advantageous in terms of the performance of pigs. In this work, we review the effects of housing systems on pigs' behaviors and performance, which are among the major indicators of the welfare of these animals. Research results point
