Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a virus from the papillomavirus family that is capable of infecting humans. Some types of HPVs cause warts, while others can lead to cancers of the cervix, vulva, vagina, penis, oropharynx and anus. High-risk human papillomavirus (hr HPV) has been detected in almost all cervical squamous cell carcinomas and adenocarcinomas. All patients examined by colposcopy. Cervical swab is routinely done and patients are screened with both HPV DNA by Real Time Polimerase Chain Reaction (RT PCR) testing and Pap testing. Pictures obtained by colposcopy were examined by indirect

Laboratory tests have a key role in preventing human papillomavirus (HPV)-driven carcinomas and in guiding therapeutic interventions. An understanding of the virology, immunology, and carcinogenesis of HPV is essential for choosing appropriate diagnostic test modalities and developing new and even more effective cancer prevention strategies. HPV infects basal epithelial cells on multiple surfaces and induces carcinoma primarily in the cervix and the oropharynx. HPV types are stratified as high risk or low risk based on their carcinogenic potential. During oncogenesis, HPV interferes with cell

Human papillomavirus (HPV)-related oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas (OPSCCs) represent a distinct clinical entity compared with HPV-negative tumors with particular regard to treatment response and survival outcome. The aim of this study was to assess the AmpFire Multiplex HR-HPV tests, for the detection and genotyping of 15 high-risk (HR) HPV types in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) samples and identify HPV-driven OPSCC. DNA from 160 OPSCC FFPE specimens plus 23 samples from other head and neck primary sites was tested. Results were compared with those obtained using Linear Arra

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer prevention should be provided as part of primary healthcare services for HIV-infected women but conventional screening programs are difficult to implement in low-resource settings. Here, we evaluate the efficacy among HIV-infected women of a simpler, screen-and-treat strategy in which all women with a positive screening test are treated with cryotherapy.
METHODS: We conducted a randomized clinical trial of two screen-and-treat strategies among 6555 women in Cape Town, South Africa, among whom 956 were HIV-positive. Women were randomized to screen-and-treat utilizin

BACKGROUND: Women with atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) can be triaged accurately with a high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) test to identify those who need a referral. However, the triage of low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) with hrHPV testing has very low specificity. Overexpression of p16, with or without Ki-67, indicates neoplastic transformation of human papillomavirus-infected cervical cells and may more accurately predict underlying cervical intraepithelial neoplasia of grade 3 or worse (CIN3+).

Samples of cervical secretions and serum from 30 women with genital condylomas and 30 age-matched controls were tested for the presence of immunoglobulin A (IgA) and IgG antibodies against a panel of papillomavirus-derived antigens. The same cervical samples were also analyzed for presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA by Southern blotting and polymerase chain reaction. By Southern blotting HPV DNA was detected in 8 of 30 patients with condylomas and 2 of 30 controls, and by the polymerase chain reaction HPV DNA was detected in 14 of 30 patients with condylomas and 5 of 30 controls. INTRODUCTION: Human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) represents a biologically distinct disease entity with superior prognosis compared with HPV-negative head and neck cancers. While imaging-based strategies, particularly those monitoring hypoxia, have emerged as promising tools for response-guided de-escalation, they may not fully capture tumor biology or residual disease risk. Consequently, circulating tumor-derived HPV DNA (ctHPV-DNA) has gained attention as a minimally invasive biomarker with potential to complement imaging for treatment monitor

Fifteen semen specimens from 10 men with intrameatal penile warts attending a genitourinary clinic were tested by Southern blot hybridisation for the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA. Five specimens were positive for HPV types 6/11. This observation may have implications for screening of semen used for artificial insemination by donor.

Infection with high-risk (HR) human papillomavirus (HPV) is the major cause of cervical cancer. However, relatively few infections progress to malignant disease. Progression to malignancy requires the overexpression of the E6 and E7 genes in the integrated HPV genome. It follows that the E6 and E7 transcripts could be useful markers of disease progression. The study presented here tests this possibility, using data from colposcopy and from cytological and histological tests to compare RNA assays for the E6 and E7 genes with DNA testing. A total of 180 women underwent colposcopy, cytology, and

OBJECTIVES: High-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) can cause oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OpSCC). The revised 8th edition of the AJCC Staging Manual now stages OpSCC by incorporating p16 immunohistochemistry (IHC), the surrogate marker for HPV status. This study assessed the prognostic values of p16 and HPV markers.
METHODS: We identified 244 OpSCC patients diagnosed between 2000 and 2008 from the British Columbia Cancer Registry with enough tissue to conduct experiments. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections were stained for p16 IHC, RNA in situ hybridization (ISH) HPV
