Does the Netherlands comply with national law and Article 2 of human rights concerning deceased minors?

BACKGROUND: In the Netherlands, reporting the death of a minor to a forensic physician has been legally required since 2010. Additionally, the Postmortem Evaluation of Sudden Death in Youth (PESUDY) procedure can be initiated for unexplained natural deaths. OBJECTIVE: This study assesses the reporting rate of deceased minors to forensic physicians, evaluates PESUDY submission rates, and explores reasons for declining PESUDY, under the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) obligations. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: This observational, retro

Transplantation and Immortality: A Selective History of Boston University's Center for Health Law, Ethics & Human Rights.

The celebration of the anniversary of the Center for Health Law, Ethics & Human Rights (the "Center") provides an opportunity to reflect on what defines the field of health law, as well as its conjoined twins of bioethics and human rights. The related fields are vast, and the subjects they encompass are ever-expanding. It is probably impossible to lay out a summary that does justice to their expansive, interdisciplinary scope. Instead, my discussion of the Center examines a subject that barely existed when the Center was formed in 19581 and that continues to make headlines more than sixty-six

Long-term segregation in mental health hospitals: qualitative study of its impact and human rights implications.

BACKGROUND: Long-term segregation (LTS) is used in mental health hospitals in England to manage individuals perceived to pose a sustained risk of harm to others. Increasing evidence indicates that LTS causes significant psychological and physical harm and may breach international human rights standards. The HOPE(S) programme (2022-2025) was introduced nationally to reduce, and ultimately end, the use of LTS for autistic people, individuals with learning disabilities and children and young people. AIMS: To explore the experiences of LTS from different perspectives and to examine its impact thr

This paper reports on human rights violation of trans women in Umlazi township in South Africa. This paper presents human rights violations experienced by trans women's in Umlazi township in South African. The study was qualitative in nature

METHODS: An implementation learning evaluation approach was used to examine the implementation of the Breaking Down Barriers initiative targeting key and vulnerable populations in Ukraine. A Human Right to Shoes? Establishing Rights and Duties in the Prevention and Treatment of Podoconiosis.

Podoconiosis is a debilitating chronic swelling of the foot and lower leg caused by long-term exposure to irritant red volcanic clay soil in the highland regions of Africa, Central America, and India. In this paper, we consider the human rights violations that cause, and are caused by, podoconiosis in Ethiopia. Specifically, we discuss the way in which the right to an adequate basic standard of living is not met in endemic regions, where the following basic necessities are not readily available: appropriate footwear, health education, and affordable, accessible health care. Those living with p

Bridging community and prison for older adults: invoking human rights and elder and intergenerational family justice.

PURPOSE: Older adults in prison present a significant health and human rights challenge for the criminal justice system. To date, there is no known study that provides a comprehensive examination or portrait of older persons in prison. The purpose of this paper is to understand individual, family, system, and community vulnerabilities that can complicate successful community reintegration for these individuals. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: This study provides a cross-sectional, descriptive analysis of biopsychosocial, spiritual, and prison use characteristics associated with a sample of 677 o

Correlates of violence in Guinea's Maison Centrale Prison: a statistical approach to documenting human rights abuses.

Les Mêmes Droits Pour Tous (MDT) is a human rights NGO in Guinea, West Africa that focuses on the rights of prisoners in Maison Centrale, the country's largest prison located in the capital city of Conakry. In 2007, MDT completed a survey of the prison population to assess basic legal and human rights conditions. This article uses statistical tools to explore MDT's survey results in greater depth, shedding light on human rights violations in Guinea. It contributes to human rights literature that argues for greater use of econometric tools in rights reporting, and demonstrates how human rights

Are nurses respecting and upholding the human rights of children and young people in their care?

Children's nurses may assume that the care they provide for children and their families is family centred and meets their holistic needs. However, very little objective evaluation has been undertaken with children and young people regarding the health services and nursing care they receive. In this study, data were collected from 18 young ventilator-dependent people and their families in order to evaluate their experiences of health and social care. The UN Convention and other policy documents advocating client-focused services were used as benchmarks for analysis, demonstrating that the needs

Right-handed fossil humans.

Fossil hominids often processed material held between their upper and lower teeth. Pulling with one hand and cutting with the other, they occasionally left impact cut marks on the lip (labial) surface of their incisors and canines. From these actions, it possible to determine the dominant hand used. The frequency of these oblique striations in an array of fossil hominins documents the typically modern pattern of 9 right- to 1 left-hander. This ratio among living Homo sapiens differs from that among chimpanzees and bonobos and more distant primate relatives. Together, all studies of living peop

[VACCINATION: HUMAN RIGHT OR DUTY].

The article focuses on the fact that 2020 has become a new point in the history of mankind, irrevocably changing the ways of life accepted in society and forcing the entire population of the earth to live in a new way. If a person's health is threatened and / or worried about the thought of a terminal illness, it is difficult to focus on something else. Over the past year, many have experienced this reality for the first time. Effective January 30, 2020, the World Health Organization has declared the coronavirus outbreak a health emergency, causing international concern. The fact that some cou

A Right to Access to Emergency Health Care: The European Court of Human Rights Pushes the Envelope.

This article argues that the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) seems to have recently acknowledged that there is a right to access to emergency health care in the member states of the Council of Europe. The Chamber of the ECtHR found that a state's failure to design a regulatory framework that guarantees access to health care in emergency situations violates the substantial limb of Article 2 European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) that protects the right to life. It is argued that the newly established requirements seem to be reasonable but that there seem to be no sufficient safeguard
