Obstetric traumatic separation of the distal humeral epiphysis is a very uncommon injury, which presents a diagnostic challenge. These case serials reviewed the functional outcomes of 5 patients who had sustained a fracture-separation of the distal humeral epiphysis at birth. The diagnosis was made at a mean time of 40.8 h after delivery. All the patients were treated with gentle close manipulation, reduction under fluoroscopy and above-elbow cast application. After discharge, the patients were followed up for a mean of 30 months. Clinico-radiological results were excellent in four patients. O

Distal humerus fractures present complex challenges in the elderly patient. These fractures often occur in patients who are living independently but have poor bone quality and low physiologic reserve, thus complicating management decisions and treatment. The goal is a painless, functional, stable elbow that allows completion of the activities of daily living. Nonsurgical management is reserved for those who cannot tolerate surgery. Open reduction and internal fixation is the preferred choice in fractures amenable to rigid fixation and early motion. Although total elbow arthroplasty provides im

Charcot's arthropathy or neuropathic osteoarthropathy is a form of destructive arthropathy associated with decreased sensory innervation. We present an unusual case of a patient referred to oncology clinic for further evaluation of a spindle cell neoplasm of the humerus concerning for malignancy. The mass presented as a lytic lesion associated with a right humerus fracture. This was later diagnosed as Charcot's shoulder secondary to cervical syringomyelia. A detailed case report and discussion are presented here.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Humeral shaft fractures may occur as a result of arm wrestling. The aim of this study was to present our treatment of humerus fracture sustained during arm wrestling.
METHODS: A total of six patients, aged 22 to 48, were treated at our department form January 2008 to January 2010 with open reduction and internal fixation and with hanging arm casts. A review of all the relevant literature on the subject was also presented.
RESULTS: In all the cases, the fractures healed and function returned to normal. No patient had any neural or vascular compromise.
CONCLUSION: Closed and o

Proximal humerus fractures are rare in paediatric traumatology. Metaphyseal fractures account for about 70% of cases and epiphyseal separation for the remaining 30%. The development and anatomy of the proximal humerus explain the various fracture types, displacements, and potential complications; and also help in interpreting the radiographic findings, most notably in young children. Physicians should be alert to the possibility of an underlying lesion or pathological fracture requiring appropriate diagnostic investigations, and they should consider child abuse in very young paediatric patient

The majority of proximal humerus fractures are low-energy osteoporotic injuries in the elderly and their incidence is increasing in the light of an ageing population. The diversity of fracture patterns encountered renders objective classification of prognostic value challenging. Non-operative management has been associated with good functional outcomes in stable, minimally displaced and certain types of displaced fractures. Absolute indications for surgery are infrequent and comprise compound, pathological, multi-fragmentary head-splitting fractures and fracture dislocations, as well as those

Knowledge of regional and topographic anatomy is paramount for success when using minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) for fracture management. Preoperative planning is essential for an optimal outcome and reducing stress among the surgical team; factors to consider include biologic assessment, mechanical assessment, clinical assessment, portal placement, and implant selection. MIPO is a useful technique for the direct or indirect reduction of humeral diaphyseal fractures. Implants should span the length of the bone for ease of implant application and to optimize the mechanical advan

Management of coronal shear fractures of the distal humerus has evolved considerably over the past 3 decades, with an increased appreciation of the complexity of these fractures, improvements in internal fixation techniques, and the use of more extensile exposures. Nearly all of these fractures are displaced, given the paucity of soft tissue attachments and correspondingly, nonsurgical management is fraught with complications including chronic pain, mechanical symptoms, and instability and is not recommended. Good to excellent outcomes can be achieved in the majority of patients with open redu

Proximal humeral fractures account for 4% to 5% of all fractures. Most of these fractures are nondisplaced or minimally displaced and amenable to nonsurgical treatment or open reduction and internal fixation. Complex proximal humeral fractures with displaced three- and four-part fragments, fracture-dislocations, and humeral head splits are more difficult to treat. In older patients, hemiarthroplasty or reverse shoulder arthroplasty is often the indicated treatment. Arthroplasty in this patient cohort is very technique-dependent and relies on preserving deltoid function, proper component placem

Supracondylar fractures of the humerus are a common pediatric elbow injury that are historically associated with morbidity due to malunion, neurovascular complications, and compartment syndrome. True anteroposterior and lateral radiographs are essential not only for an accurate diagnosis, but also for creating a treatment plan for these injuries. A staging system (based on the lateral radiograph) for classifying the severity of the fracture helps guide definitive management. Nondisplaced fractures are treated initially with a posterior splint, followed by a long-arm casting. Closed reduction a

A 14-year-old intact male Maltese dog was presented with a history of pain and swelling of the left upper forelimb and lameness for 3 weeks. Hematological and radiographical examinations showed regenerative anemia and osteolysis of the humerus. Fine needle aspiration biopsy detected epithelioid- and fibroblast-like anaplastic cells with blood components. A hemorrhagic and osteolytic malignant tumor was suspected, and the affected forelimb was amputated. Histopathologically, the dog was diagnosed with primary hemangiosarcoma of the humerus. Thereafter, metastatic lesions appeared in the skin, a

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this retrospective study was to identify the patterns of distal humeral articular fractures and to analyze the results of open reduction and internal fixation of these injuries.
METHODS: The cases of twenty-one patients with an articular fracture of the distal part of the humerus were reviewed at an average of forty months after the injury. Five components of the injury were identified: (1) the capitellum and the lateral aspect of the trochlea, (2) the lateral epicondyle, (3) the posterior aspect of the lateral column, (4) the posterior aspect of the trochlea, and (

OBJECTIVE: To explore the injury mechanism and treatment principle of open supracondylar fracture of humerus.
METHODS: The data of 32 patients with open supracondylar fracture of humerus hospitalized in our department in the recent 20 years were analyzed retrospectively. On an average, they were followed up for 30 months. The relationship between the fracture type, situation of wounds, operating time, operating method and time for postoperative functional exercise and final function of elbow joint were evaluated with Flynn scoring standard.
RESULTS: Excellent therapeutic effect was found in

BACKGROUND: Some nonunions of the distal part of the humerus are so unstable that the hand and the forelimb cannot be supported against gravity. The purpose of the present retrospective study was to analyze the results of open reduction and internal fixation, joint contracture release, and autogenous bone-grafting in the treatment of these unstable nonunions of the distal part of the humerus.
METHODS: Fifteen patients (average age, sixty years) with an unstable nonunion of the distal part of the humerus were treated with excision of fibrous and synovial tissues, opening of sclerotic fracture

Fractures of the upper arm near the shoulder are common. A consensus on treatment only occurs for simple, un-dislocated fractures and with the complete destruction of the concha in elderly people. For most of the 2-4 component fractures, there exist a variety of, in part contradictory, recommendations in the literature. The most diverse statements mirror the conflict between the best anatomical solution and the practically most stable position with the least possible additional damage of the surrounding structures through surgery. Whether the implants with the most stable angle using the lates

Supracondylar fractures (SF) of the humerus are the third most common type of fractures in childhood. The highest rate of pulselessness fracture of the distal humerus is the extension-type. The aim of our treatment is to minimize potential complications. Our management of pulselessness supracondylar fracture is more aggressive compared with other dpts. 223 (100%) patients with SF were treated at the dpt. of Paediatric Surgery, University Children's Hospital in Bratislava, in the 5-year period of (1995-1999). 11 (4.93%) patients remained pulseless after reposition of bone fragments. The concept of an endoprosthetic surface replacement of the humeral head differs from that of stemmed endoprostheses. It is the replacement of the destroyed joint surface with reconstruction of the normal anatomy and minimal bone resection. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the short-term results of a newly developed cup arthroplasty (Durom-Cup) for the humeral head. In a prospective study, 39 patients with 46 Durom-Cups were evaluated preoperatively and every 3 months postoperatively. The average follow-up was 15 +/- 9 months. The group included 28 shoulders with rheumatoid ar

We performed an outcome study of completely displaced supracondylar fractures in children in order to assess the outcome of primary open reduction and internal fixation for these injuries. A total of 16 patients (mean age of 5.9 years) were included in the study. The mean follow-up was 2.6 years and patients were assessed after fracture healing using the criteria of Flynn et al. and Mark et al. Thirteen patients had an excellent result, two had good results with less than 10 degrees loss of carrying angle and one had a fair result based on degree of loss of elbow flexion. Open reduction and in

We report on a 69-year-old woman with a solid variant of aneurysmal bone cyst (solid ABC) in the left humerus with a pathological fracture. Radiographically, the lesion exhibited a relatively well-defined osteolytic lesion in the diaphysis of the left humerus. On magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, the medullary lesion exhibited a homogeneous signal intensity isointense with surrounding normal muscles on the T1-weighted images and a mixture of low and high signal intensity on the T2-weighted images. Contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images revealed diffuse enhancement of the entire lesion. The pathol
