Temperature and Humidity Sensitivity of Polymer Optical Fibre Sensors Tuned by Pre-Strain.

Polymer optical fibre Bragg grating (POFBG) sensors are of high interest due to their enhanced fracture toughness, flexibility in bending, and sensitivity in stress and pressure monitoring applications compared to silica-based sensors. The POFBG sensors can also detect humidity due to the hydrophilic nature of some polymers. However, multi-parameter sensing can cause cross-sensitivity issues in certain applications if the temperature and humidity measurements are not adequately compensated. In this work, we demonstrate the possibility of selectively tuning sensors' temperature and humidity sen

Research on Photoelectric Responses of SnO₂ Film to Humidity Under UV Light Irradiation.

In this work, to research the photoelectric responses to humidity using a semiconductor film, an ultraviolet (UV) light induced device has been investigated on SnO₂ film at room temperature. Screen printing method was used to prepare SnO₂ film on the Al₂O₃ substrate. The crystalline structure and morphology of SnO₂ was characterized with XRD and FE-SEM. The UV light induced photoelectric responses of SnO₂ to a constant humidity (20% RH) were evaluated firstly under four different bias voltages. At 2 V bias voltage, the photocurrent amplitude reaches 4.58 μA, which is higher than that of 0.2 V

Dual Response of Photonic Films with Chiral Nematic Cellulose Nanocrystals: Humidity and Formaldehyde.

Manipulating functional stimuli-responsive materials has been a hot topic in the research of smart sensors and anticounterfeiting encryption. Here, a novel functional chiral nematic cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) film showing dual responsiveness to humidity and formaldehyde gas was fabricated. The chiral nematic CNC iridescent film could respond to environmental humidity and formaldehyde gas changes by reversible motion. Interestingly, the humidity sensitivity of the CNC iridescent film could be gated by exposing the film to formaldehyde gas. At the same time, the formaldehyde-responsive behavior

High-performance humidity sensor using Schottky-contacted SnS nanoflakes for noncontact healthcare monitoring.

Humidity sensors based on flexible sensitive nanomaterials are very attractive in noncontact healthcare monitoring. However, the existing humidity sensors have some shortcomings such as limited sensitivity, narrow relative humidity (RH) range, and a complex process. Herein, we show that a tin sulphide (SnS) nanoflakes-based sensor presents high humidity sensing behaviour both in rigid and flexible substrate. The sensing mechanism based on the Schottky nature of a SnS-metal contact endows the as-fabricated sensor with a high response of 2491000% towards a wide RH range from 3% RH to 99% RH. The

Human exposure to sulfur dioxide and ozone in a high temperature-humidity environment.

In order to examine the role of high temperature and humidity in the possible synergistic action of ozone and sulfur dioxide on human pulmonary function previously reported by some investigators and repudiated by others, we randomly exposed eight healthy young male nonsmokers to filtered air, 0.4 ppm SO2, 0.4 ppm O3, and 0.4 ppm SO2 plus 0.4 ppm O3 at 35 degrees C--85% rh for 2 hours. Subjects exercised for 15 minutes of each half hour at a workload sufficient to elicit a minute ventilation of 30 liters (BTPS). Pulmonary function tests were performed prior to, during, and following exposure. O

Influence of relative humidity on functional effects of an inhaled SO2-aerosol mixture.

Lightly anesthetized guinea pigs were exposed to 1 ppm of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and 1 mg per m3 of sodium chloride aerosol, individually and in combination, at low and high relative humidities. At low relative humidity (less than 40 per cent) the aerosol was a crystal, at high relative humidity (greater than 80 per cent) a droplet. Exposures lasted one hour. Changes in pulmonary mechanical function characterized by an increase in flow resistance and decrease in compliance were seen only when the mixture was administered at high relative humidity. The effect is ascribed to absorption of the high

Environmental factors and antimicrobial efficacy: the impact of temperature and humidity on material surfaces.

Current International Standards Organization (ISO) for testing antimicrobial materials often lack regulatory approval for clinical use because they do not accurately reflect real-world environmental conditions. In this study, we systematically evaluated the effects of temperature (4°C-37°C) and humidity (15%-100% relative humidity) on microbial survival (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, HCoV-OC43, and influenza virus) and the efficacy of various antimicrobial surfaces (stainless steel, copper, polyethylene terephthalate [PET], and Cu₂O@ZrP-modified PET) using established ISO standards,

Warming drives sustained plant phosphorus demand in a humid tropical forest.

Phosphorus (P) is often one of the most limiting nutrients in highly weathered soils of humid tropical forests and may regulate the responses of carbon (C) feedback to climate warming. However, the response of P to warming at the ecosystem level in tropical forests is not well understood because previous studies have not comprehensively assessed changes in multiple P processes associated with warming. Here, we detected changes in the ecosystem P cycle in response to a 7-year continuous warming experiment by translocating model plant-soil ecosystems across a 600-m elevation gradient, equivalent

Meta-analysis of the effects of ambient temperature and relative humidity on the risk of mumps.

Many studies have shown that the relationship between ambient temperature, relative humidity and mumps has been highlighted. However, these studies showed inconsistent results. Therefore, the goal of our study is to conduct a meta-analysis to clarify this relationship and to quantify the size of these effects as well as the potential factors. Systematic literature researches on PubMed, Embase.com, Web of Science Core Collection, Cochrane library, Chinese BioMedical Literature Database (CBM) and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) were performed up to February 7, 2022 for articles an

Effect of Humidity on Light-Activated NO and NO2 Gas Sensing by Hybrid Materials.

Air humidity is one of the main factors affecting the characteristics of semiconductor gas sensors, especially at low measurement temperatures. In this work we analyzed the influence of relative humidity on sensor properties of the hybrid materials based on the nanocrystalline SnO2 and In2O3 and Ru (II) heterocyclic complex and verified the possibility of using such materials for NO (0.25-4.0 ppm) and NO2 (0.05-1.0 ppm) detection in high humidity conditions (relative humidity (RH) = 20%, 40%, 65%, 90%) at room temperature during periodic blue (λmax = 470 nm) illumination. To reveal the reasons

Development of a System for Real-Time Monitoring of Pressure, Temperature, and Humidity in Casts.

Cast fixation is a general clinical skill used for the treatment of fractures. However, it may cause many complications due to careless treatment procedures. Currently, swathing a cast for a patient can only be determined by a doctors' experience; however, this cannot be determined by the value of pressure, temperature, or humidity with objective and reliable equipment. When swathing a cast for a patient, the end result is often too tight or too loose. Hence, in this paper we developed a sensor for detecting pressure, temperature, and humidity, respectively. This could provide reliable referen

The influence of temperature and humidity on the incidence of hand, foot, and mouth disease in Japan.

BACKGROUND: The increasing evidence for rapid global climate change has highlighted the need for investigations examining the relationship between weather variability and infectious diseases. However, the impact of weather fluctuations on hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), which primarily affects children, is not well understood. METHODS: We acquired data related to cases of HFMD and weather parameters of temperature and humidity in Fukuoka, Japan between 2000 and 2010, and used time-series analyses to assess the possible relationship of weather variability with pediatric HFMD cases, adjus

Effect of pharmaceutical excipients on the stability of trichlormethiazide tablets under humid conditions.

The stability of trichlormethiazide (TCM) and the drug in the nine products available on the market (the original tablet (B) and 8 generic tablets (G1-G8)) were investigated under humid conditions. TCM was non-hygroscopic and was not degraded under humid conditions. Drug degradation in aqueous ethanol was accelerated with increased water concentration, and the drug stability in buffer solution was improved with decreased pH. TCM decomposition was not detected in each unwrapped tablet at low relative humidity. However, rapid degradation was observed for products G1 and G2, while product B and G
