Association between hedonic hunger and body-mass index versus obesity status.

Obesity-associated differences in hedonic hunger, while consistently reported, have not been adequately quantified, with most studies failing to demonstrate strong correlations between Body Mass Index (BMI) and hedonic hunger indicators. Here, we quantified and assessed the nature of the relationship between hedonic hunger and BMI, in a cross-sectional study using the Portuguese version of the PFS (P-PFS) to measure hedonic hunger. Data were collected from 1266 participants belonging to non-clinical, clinical (candidates for weight-loss surgery) and population samples. Across samples, signific

Effects of electric stimulation of the hunger center in the lateral hypothalamus on slow electric activity and spike activity of fundal and antral stomach muscles in rabbits under conditions of hunger and satiation.

In chronic experiments on rabbits, the effect of electric stimulation of the hunger center in the lateral hypothalamus on myoelectric activity of the fundal and antral parts of the stomach was studied under conditions of hunger and satiation in the absence of food. Stimulation of the lateral hypothalamus in rabbits subjected to 24-h food deprivation and in previously fed rabbits produced incessant seeking behavior, which was followed by reorganization of the structure of temporal organization of slow wave electric activity of muscles of the stomach body and antrum specific for hungry and satia

Testing a learning-based account of interoceptive hunger using an illusory induction.

Physiological changes cause many interoceptive cues (e.g., a rumbling stomach), and so it is often assumed they also cause their motivational consequences (e.g., hunger). However, there is grounds to suspect that the meaning of interoceptive cues are learned and it is their meaning that causes their motivational consequences. We tested this possibility by psychologically inducing an illusory interoceptive hunger cue to see if it stimulated hunger and food intake. Participants (n = 130) received either a stomach rumbling or control sound (electrical arcing/buzzing), while judging liking for non

Weeping Wound, Disgruntled Gut and Fading Hunger: Acrodermatitis Enteropathica in an Infant.

Acrodermatitis enteropathica (AE) is a clinical disorder that manifests due to severe zinc deficiency, which can be either genetic or acquired. The acquired form has been reported in patients with poor dietary intake, alcoholism, chronic liver disease, malabsorption syndrome, sickle cell anemia, or chronic renal failure, which usually presents at a later stage in life and has similar clinical features to the inherited defect. On the other hand, the genetic form is an autosomal recessive disorder, characterized by periorificial dermatitis, alopecia, and diarrhea caused by a defect in the SLC39A

Gambling on an empty stomach: Hunger modulates preferences for learned but not described risks.

INTRODUCTION: We assess risks differently when they are explicitly described, compared to when we learn directly from experience, suggesting dissociable decision-making systems. Our needs, such as hunger, could globally affect our risk preferences, but do they affect described and learned risks equally? On one hand, decision-making from descriptions is often considered flexible and context sensitive, and might therefore be modulated by metabolic needs. On the other hand, preferences learned through reinforcement might be more strongly coupled to biological drives. METHOD: Thirty-two healthy p

A neural pathway underlying hunger modulation of sexual receptivity in Drosophila females.

Accepting or rejecting a mate is one of the most crucial decisions a female will make, especially when faced with food shortage. Previous studies have identified the core neural circuity from sensing male courtship or mating status to decision-making for sexual receptivity in Drosophila females, but how hunger and satiety states modulate female receptivity is poorly understood. Here, we identify the neural circuit and its neuromodulation underlying the hunger modulation of female receptivity. We find that adipokinetic hormone receptor (AkhR)-expressing neurons inhibit sexual receptivity in a s

Hunger games in the host cell: Toxoplasma traps and skins host mitochondria.

Toxoplasma gondii actively tethers host mitochondria to its vacuole, altering their function. In a recent issue of Science, Li et al. demonstrate that Toxoplasma disarms host metabolic defenses by inducing the organelle to shed atypical large structures from its outer membrane to trap mitochondrial proteins that restrict parasite growth.

Hunger and torture. Assessing the adequacy of prison food under international law.

BACKGROUND: Deprivation of prisoner food, in terms of its quality and quantity, has generally been accepted as violating the prohibition of torture and related ill-treatment, particularly when combined with other factors (i.e., harmful conditions and practices). Aspects relevant to assessing when and how food provision is considered inadequate, however, remain complex and confusing. This article presents a doctrinal review which consolidates normative understandings of adequate prisoner food. METHOD: A systematic full-text search was made of international and regional normative standards, cas

Pandemic of hunger: The severe nutritional deficiency that kills Yanomami ethnic children.

Chronic malnutrition is the painful reality that Yanomami children face in Brazil's largest Indigenous Land and is pointed out by specialists as one of the results of the federal government's "anti-indigenous policy". The lack, or scarcity, of medical care, together with the lack of environmental inspection, pushes the Yanomami into a desperate scenario. It is estimated that 20,000 illegal miners operate in the territory. Mining activity contaminates rivers with mercury and has caused deformities and illnesses in women and children. They live on the largest indigenous reserve in Brazil. There

Neural Insensitivity to the Effects of Hunger in Women Remitted From Anorexia Nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric condition, yet the pathophysiology of this disorder and its primary symptom, extreme dietary restriction, remains poorly understood. In states of hunger relative to satiety, the rewarding value of food stimuli normally increases to promote eating, yet individuals with anorexia nervosa avoid food despite emaciation. This study's aim was to examine potential neural insensitivity to these effects of hunger in anorexia nervosa. METHODS: At two scanning sessions scheduled 24 hours apart, one after a 16-hour fast and one

Hunger and disinhibition but not cognitive restraint are associated with central norepinephrine transporter availability.

The relationship between food-intake related behaviours measured by the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ) and in vivo norepinephrine transporter (NET) availability has not been explored yet. We investigated ten obese individuals (body mass index (BMI) 42.4 ± 3.7 kg/m2) and ten normal-weight healthy controls (HC, BMI 23.9 ± 2.5 kg/m2) with (S,S)-[11C]-O-methylreboxetine ([11C]MRB) positron emission tomography (PET). All participants completed the TFEQ, which measures cognitive restraint, disinhibition and hunger. Image analysis required magnetic resonance imaging data sets onto which vol

Hidden hunger in South Asia: a review of recent trends and persistent challenges.

'Hidden hunger' is a term used to describe human deficiencies of key vitamins and minerals, also known as micronutrients. While global in scale, the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies is particularly high in South Asia despite recent successes in economic growth, agricultural output and health care. The present paper reviews the most recent evidence on patterns and trends of hidden hunger across the region, with a focus on the most significant deficiencies - iodine, Fe, vitamin A and Zn - and interprets these in terms of health and economic consequences. The challenge for South Asian pol

Ghrelin, MicroRNAs, and Critical Limb Ischemia: Hungering for a Novel Treatment Option.

Critical limb ischemia (CLI) is the most severe manifestation of peripheral artery disease. It is characterized by chronic pain at rest, skin ulcerations, and gangrene tissue loss. CLI is a highly morbid condition, resulting in a severely diminished quality of life and a significant risk of mortality. The primary goal of therapy for CLI is to restore blood flow to the affected limb, which is only possible by surgery, but is inadvisable in up to 50% of patients. This subset of patients who are not candidates for revascularisation are referred to as "no-option" patients and are the focus of inve

The independent and interacting effects of hedonic hunger and executive function on binge eating.

Poor executive function (EF; pre-frontal cognitive control processes governing goal-directed behavior) and elevated hedonic hunger (i.e., preoccupation with palatable foods in the absence of physiological hunger) are theoretical risk and maintenance factors for binge eating (BE) distinct from general obesity. Recent theoretical models posit that dysregulated behavior such as BE may result from a combination of elevated appetitive drive (e.g., hedonic hunger) and decreased EF (e.g., inhibitory control and delayed discounting). The present study sought to test this model in distinguishing BE fro

Always gamble on an empty stomach: hunger is associated with advantageous decision making.

Three experimental studies examined the counterintuitive hypothesis that hunger improves strategic decision making, arguing that people in a hot state are better able to make favorable decisions involving uncertain outcomes. Studies 1 and 2 demonstrated that participants with more hunger or greater appetite made more advantageous choices in the Iowa Gambling Task compared to sated participants or participants with a smaller appetite. Study 3 revealed that hungry participants were better able to appreciate future big rewards in a delay discounting task; and that, in spite of their perception of

Effects of hunger and visuo-spatial interference on imagery-induced food cravings.

The present study investigated the effects of hunger and visuo-spatial interference on imagery-induced food cravings. Forty-two women were randomly assigned to a hungry (no food for prior 4h) or not hungry condition. Participants were asked to form and maintain images of desired foods while looking at a blank computer screen (control condition) or performing a task designed to load the visuo-spatial sketchpad of working memory (dynamic visual noise). They then rated the vividness of their images and their craving intensity. Although hungry participants reported stronger food cravings, dynamic

Food intake, hunger, and satiety after preloads in women with eating disorders.

Food intake, food selection, macronutrient intake, sensory-specific satiety, and ratings of hunger and satiety were measured after high- and low-energy salad preloads (2414 kJ, or 172 kJ) or no preload to determine whether patients with eating disorders compensate appropriately for different energy intakes. Subjects were female patients with a DSM-III-R diagnosis of anorexia nervosa with bulimic features or bulimia nervosa, or non patient, normal-weight, nondieters (n = 9/group). At a self-selected lunch 30 min after the preloads, all of the groups reduced intake after the high-energy preload,
