Riparian vegetation structure and the hunting behavior of adult estuarine crocodiles.

Riparian ecosystems are amongst the most biodiverse tropical habitats. They are important, and essential, ecological corridors, linking remnant forest fragments. In this study, we hypothesised that crocodile's actively select nocturnal resting locations based on increased macaque predation potential. We examined the importance of riparian vegetation structure in the maintenance of crocodile hunting behaviours. Using airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and GPS telemetry on animal movement, we identified the repeated use of nocturnal resting sites by adult estuarine crocodiles (Crocodyl

Visual search in hunting archerfish shares all hallmarks of human performance.

Archerfish are renowned for shooting down aerial prey with water jets, but nothing is known about how they spot prey items in their richly structured mangrove habitats. We trained archerfish to stably assign the categories 'target' and 'background' to objects solely on the basis of non-motion cues. Unlike many other hunters, archerfish are able to discriminate a target from its background in the complete absence of either self-motion or relative motion parallax cues and without using stored information about the structure of the background. This allowed us to perform matched tests to compare t

Locomotion and hunting strategies of large vertebrate predators in pelagic waters.

Many of the key dynamics that shape predator-prey interactions are governed by the physical and physiological principles which determine how animals move and perform in their environments. This opinion paper outlines the foundations underlying marine vertebrate predator-prey encounters within the context of pelagic habitats. Variables, such as maximum swimming speed, acceleration and manoeuvrability, play crucial roles in dictating the outcome of predator-prey encounters. In pelagic areas, sustainable swimming speed is an additional factor that can play an important role when chases occur. The

Dissecting Larval Zebrafish Hunting using Deep Reinforcement Learning Trained RNN Agents.

Larval zebrafish hunting provides a tractable setting to study how ecological and energetic constraints shape adaptive behavior in both biological brains and artificial agents. Here we develop a minimal agent-based model, training recurrent policies with deep reinforcement learning in a bout-based zebrafish simulator. Despite its simplicity, the model reproduces hallmark hunting behaviors-including eye vergence-linked pursuit, speed modulation, and stereotyped approach trajectories-that closely match real larval zebrafish. Quantitative trajectory analyses show that pursuit bouts systematically

Neurobrucellosis associated with feral swine hunting in the southern United States.

Although uncommon, Brucella infection can occur outside the areas of high endemicity, such as the USA. In the southern USA, hunters of wild swine are at risk for brucellosis. We present a case of a patient with fever, headache and constitutional symptoms that were ongoing for 11 months. He was diagnosed with neurobrucellosis. The patient was treated successfully with intravenous ceftriaxone, oral doxycycline and oral rifampin therapy. He had persistent neurological sequelae after completing treatment. This case illustrates the high index of suspicion needed to diagnose neurobrucellosis in a no

Tree stand falls: A persistent cause of neurological injury in hunting.

AIM: To characterize and compare our current series of patients to prior reports in order to identify any changes in the incidence of neurological injury related to hunting accidents in Rochester, New York. METHODS: All tree stand-related injuries referred to our regional trauma center from September 2003 through November 2011 were reviewed. Information was obtained from the hospital's trauma registry and medical records were retrospectively reviewed for data pertaining to the injuries. RESULTS: Fifty-four patients were identified. Ninety-six percent of patients were male with a mean age of

Serological and molecular survey of Anaplasma phagocytophilum in Italian hunting dogs.

The presence of Anaplasma phagocytophilum, a tick-transmitted zoonotic pathogen, has been reported in Italy in humans and several animal species, including dogs, but data concerning its prevalence in the Italian canine population are lacking. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of A. phagocytophilum infection in hunting dogs which live in geographic areas of central Italy where the infection had been previously detected in wild animals. Sera from 215 hunting dogs were tested by indirect immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT) to detect antibodies to A. phagocytophilum. Buffy

A lectin from the Chinese bird-hunting spider binds sialic acids.

The affinity to sialic acid-containing oligosaccharides of the small-animal lectin SHL-I isolated from the venom of the Chinese bird-hunting spider Selenocosmia huwena is here described for the first time. By a strategic combination of NMR techniques, molecular modeling, and data mining tools it was possible to identify the crucial amino acid residues that are responsible for SHL-I's ability to bind sialic acid residues in a specific way. Furthermore, we are able to discuss the role of the functional groups of sialic acid when bound to SHL-I. Also the impact of Pro31 in its cis- or trans-form

Hunting for immune response regulatory genes: vaccination studies in infant twins.

The contribution of twin studies towards unraveling the complex mechanisms of multifactorial diseases is increasingly recognized. Recent twin studies using infant vaccination as a model for infectious diseases have confirmed the importance of host genetic factors as major regulators of the immune response. A combination of twin-based family studies and population-based association studies should lead to the identification of the specific genes involved. These genes and their products have the potential to be developed as targets for novel therapeutic and prophylactic agents against infectious

Hunting for electrophiles that harm human DNA: Frits Sobels Award Lecture.

This lecture is dedicated to Frits Sobels and his farsighted vision on research directions in genetic toxicology. Some accomplishments by the author's research group in the area of cancer etiology research and pre-clinical drug safety evaluation are presented. Praziquantel, an antischistosomal drug, was found to be devoid of any genetic effects which determined the drug companies to proceed with further safety evaluation and marketing. This highly efficient life-saving drug is now in use world wide. Biomonitoring methods have been developed to quantitate carcinogens, their metabolites or DNA a

Tolosa-Hunt Syndrome: A Case Report.

Tolosa-Hunt syndrome (THS) is a rare neurological condition characterized by ophthalmoplegia preceded by retroorbital pain or headache. It mainly involves cranial nerves III, IV, and VI. The majority of the time, the cause is unknown; it is believed that the cause is nonspecific granulomatous inflammation of the cavernous sinus and superior orbital fissure or rarely beyond. THS is an exclusionary diagnosis. It is diagnosed clinically according to the patient's symptoms, neuroimaging test results, and response to corticosteroid therapy. The mainstay of treatment is corticosteroid therapy. A 62-

The Witch-Hunt Narrative: Introduction and Overview.

This article provides an overview of The Witch-Hunt Narrative, focusing on the challenges of gathering information from young children, such as those involved in sexual abuse allegations in day care. The article summarizes the research methodology of The Witch-Hunt Narrative, which involves a series of case studies. The article articulates Cheit's hypothesis, which is that the witch-hunt narrative originated in two key publications, a series of articles by two journalists, Tom Charlier and Shirley Dowling, and the book, Satan's Silence: Ritual Abuse and the Making of a Modern-Day Witch-Hunt, b

A Response to "The Legacy of the Witch-Hunt Narrative".

The article provides an overview of and commentary on the last chapter of Cheit's book, The Witch-Hunt Narrative: Politics, Psychology and the Sexual Abuse of Children. The chapter is divided into two sections called "Recent Developments" and "The Legacy of the Witch-Hunt Narrative." We respond to the key assertions in each of those sections, providing discussion points of agreement and disagreement with Cheit, and note some areas Cheit does not cover, including important advances in the aftermath of the witch-hunt narrative (WHN). The article takes the position that there is cause for optimis

[Ramsay Hunt syndrome and current approaches].

Ramsay Hunt syndrome (RHS) is a disease characterized by acute peripheric facial paralysis, vesicular eruptions on the auricular skin and severe ear pain caused by reactivation of latent Varicella zoster virus in the geniculate ganglion. In addition to clinical findings, the diagnosis is confirmed with the presence of viral DNA in the involved tissue and vesicular exudate, as assessed by polymerase chain reaction. Corticosteroids for their anti-inflammatory effects and antiviral agents for their anti-replicative effects on viral load are used as the first-line therapy. However, there is a limi
