Climate data, localisation of the sting, grade of anaphylaxis and therapy of hymenoptera stings.

International epidemiological studies indicate that around 1-7% of the population respond with an allergic reaction to a hymenoptera sting, which is frequently associated with admission to an emergency department. This retrospective study included patients admitted between 2009 and 2013 to an emergency department after a hymenoptera sting. In all, 86 (60.1%) men and 57 (39.9%) women were included in the study. The mean age was 43 years, with a range from 19 to 84 years. The most common localisations of a sting were the head (n = 33; 22.5%), the hands (n = 32; 21.9%) and the arms (n = 26; 17.8%

Stinging the Conscience: A Case of Severe Hymenoptera Anaphylaxis and the Need for Provider Awareness.

Hymenoptera venom allergy accounts for approximately 17% of all cases of anaphylaxis. Insect stings are a common occurrence across the world, with significant impact on active duty personnel. Venom immunotherapy (VIT) provides an effective treatment for those with systemic reactions to insect stings and other similar indications. We present a case of severe reaction to hymenoptera venom requiring an epinephrine drip and provide an overview for primary care providers on who should be referred to allergy or an allergist, carry an epinephrine auto-injector, and be a candidate for VIT. As this cas

Effects of kaolin on Ophelimus maskelli (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) in laboratory and nursery experiments.

Although recent research has demonstrated that clays provide satisfactory control of some agricultural insect pests, the effect of clays on gall wasps that damage forest trees has not been previously reported. The aim of the current study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the clay kaolin in the laboratory and in the field in reducing the damage caused by the eulophid Ophelimus maskelli (Ashmead) on seedlings of eucalyptus (Eucalyptus L'Hér.) species. In the laboratory, kaolin + wetting agent significantly reduced the percentage of infested leaves and the number of galls per leaf. In the nurs

Diagnostic value of the basophil activation test in evaluating Hymenoptera venom sensitization.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of allergy to Hymenoptera venom is usually confirmed with skin testing and measurement of specific serum IgE antibody, tests which are sometimes inconclusive. In these cases, additional in vitro tests are necessary. The aim of this study was to show the applicability of the basophil activation test in detecting sensitization to Hymenoptera venom and to compare the test sensitivity and clinical positive-predictive value with skin prick tests and measurement of allergen-specific serum IgE. METHODS: This prospective study was conducted between June 2004 and December 2007 an

Cutaneous manifestations in Hymenoptera and Diptera anaphylaxis: relationship with basal serum tryptase.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the clinical presentation of systemic anaphylaxis to Hymenoptera and Diptera with regard to basal serum tryptase (BT) and to evaluate mastocytosis in patients with elevated tryptase. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The medical records of 140 patients with a history of a systemic reaction to venom were retrospectively reviewed. Symptoms and severity of anaphylaxis and BT were recorded. Most patients with elevated tryptase were screened for mastocytosis: a dermatological examination with a skin biopsy was performed in 19 cases and a bone marrow biopsy in 14 cases. RESULTS: Tryptas

How much specific is the association between hymenoptera venom allergy and mastocytosis?

BACKGROUND: The preferential association of mastocytosis with hymenoptera sting reactions is well known, but there is no data on the prevalence of clonal mast cell disorders in subjects with severe systemic reactions due to foods or drugs. METHODS: Patients with food- or drug-induced severe systemic reactions, including anaphylaxis, and increased serum tryptase were studied for the presence of mastocytosis, and compared with a population of patients with hymenoptera allergy. The aetiological role of foods or drugs was assessed according to current recommendations. Systemic reactions were grad

Hymenoptera venom allergy: characteristics, tolerance and efficacy of immunotherapy in the paediatric population.

Hymenoptera venom allergy is a growing problem in Spain. This problem has a special relevance in areas where population is frequently exposed to hymenoptera stings, being paediatric patients a high risk population. Immunotherapy with hymenoptera venom is an effective and safe treatment for these patients. However, there is a lack of data on the role of this treatment on paediatric population. For this reason, from the data base of the Allergy Unit from Hospital Xeral (Lugo, Spain) which includes 560 patients, have been analyzed the 21 paediatric patients, all of them treated with venom immunot

The CD63 basophil activation test in Hymenoptera venom allergy: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: The basophil activation test (BAT), which relies on flow cytometric quantitation of the allergen-induced up-regulation of the granule-associated marker CD63 in peripheral blood basophils, has been suggested to be a useful approach in detecting responsiveness to allergens. The purpose of this study was to establish the usefulness of the BAT with regard to the clinical history and current diagnostic tools in Hymenoptera venom allergy using a prospective study design. METHODS: Fifty-seven consecutive patients allergic to Hymenoptera venom as defined by a systemic reaction after an in

Anaphylactoid shock following Hymenoptera sting as a presenting symptom of systemic mastocytosis.

Systemic mastocytosis is a rare and chronic disorder characterized by a pathologically increased number of mast cells in various tissues and overproduction of mast cell mediators. From a group of 15 patients (10 females, 5 males) with systemic mastocytosis five female patients presented with a history of an anaphylactoid shock reaction to wasp sting. Three of them had no demonstrable specific IgE against wasp or bee venom in serum, and a skin test that was only weakly positive for wasp venom. One patient had specific IgE against wasp venom and a clearly positive skin test to wasp venom. The ot

[The basophilic histamine liberation test as a diagnostic method in Hymenoptera venom allergy].

In 181 patients with systemic reactions to hymenoptera stings as a result of immediate-type allergy to bee or wasp venom confirmed by history, skin testing and demonstration of hymenoptera venom-specific IgE antibodies on radioallergosorbent testing (RAST), in vitro histamine release from peripheral basophilic granulocytes following stimulation with bee or wasp venom was evaluated. Suspensions of washed peripheral leukocytes at a density of 2 x 10(6)/ml were incubated with four different concentrations of hymenoptera venoms. Histamine was measured by spectrofluorometry, and histamine release w

Factitious Hymenoptera allergic emergency: a report of a new variant of Munchausen's syndrome.

We report of the case of a young woman with three hospitalizations and six emergency room visits for treatment of bronchospasm and angioedema first thought to be the result of Hymenoptera venom allergic reactions. Because several features of her illness were not consistent with the usual course of Hymenoptera anaphylaxis and because of a known history of anaphylactic-type reactions following aspirin ingestion, a presumptive diagnosis of factitious anaphylaxis was considered, the medical staff was alerted to evaluate this possibility, and the diagnosis was established. Serologic testing support

Deep learning reveals ecological decoupling and rate heterogeneity in Hymenoptera wing evolution.

Quantifying biomorphological evolution and integrating phenotypic data into large-scale ecological and evolutionary studies are often limited by the scalability, subjectivity, and poor interpretability of existing methods. We introduce HAIKA (Hierarchical Attention-based Interpretable K-dimensional Autoencoder), a self-supervised residual channel-attention autoencoder that extracts continuous morphological representations from unlabeled standardized images and highlights the image regions that contribute to those representations. Applied to insect forewings across broad pterygote lineages, HAI

Description of five new species of Tetragonula (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Meliponini) from India.

PURPOSE: Cisplatin-gemcitabine is a synergistic chemotherapy (CT) combination highly proven in a broad spectrum of epithelial neoplasms and shows a non-cross-resistance profile with the most active drugs in metastatic breast cancer (MBC). We have conducted an exploratory study to determine if treatment with low doses of a combination of fixed-rate gemcitabine infusion and cisplatin was clinically meaningful in women relapsing after a minimum of 2 prior lines of CT for advanced disease (range 2-6), which had to have necessarily included both anthracyclines and taxanes. Another goal was to find

Risk stratification of systemic allergic reactions during Hymenoptera venom immunotherapy buildup phase.

BACKGROUND: Comparability of previous studies assessing the incidence of systemic reactions during Hymenoptera venom immunotherapy (VIT) is impaired by methodical differences concerning the definition and classification of VIT-induced anaphylaxis. Our study aims to systematically evaluate the time course and clinical symptoms of VIT-related systemic reactions. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 12-year data on 818 buildup cycles including 8,504 single injections were retrieved from detailed inpatient treatment protocols. The severity of VIT-related anaphylaxis was graded according to a system proposed by

Activity of bifenthrin, chlorfenapyr, fipronil, and thiamethoxam against Argentine ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).

Bifenthrin, chlorfenapyr, fipronil, and thiamethoxam were evaluated for activity against the Argentine ant, Linepithema humile (Mayr) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). Mobility impairment and lethal times were determined after topical treatments. Ants were immobilized most quickly by bifenthrin, followed by chlorfenapyr and thiamethoxam. After 2 h, the number of fipronil-treated ants unable to walk out of test arenas did not differ from control ants. Median lethal time (LT50) after topical treatment was lowest in the bifenthrin treatment, followed by thiamethoxam, chlorfenapyr, and then fipronil. Mor

Development of new IgE specificities to hymenoptera allergens during venom-specific immunotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Despite the benefits of specific immunotherapy (SIT) being clinically well documented for allergic diseases, new IgE specificities to SIT extract allergens could be induced during the treatment. The authors evaluated these changes in patients allergic to Hymenoptera. METHODS: Six patients allergic to Hymenoptera venom were included in the study. Specific IgE (sIgE) levels determination and IgE immunoblots to Apis mellifera, Vespula spp. and Polistes spp. venom were performed before and after one year of SIT. RESULTS: All patients had sIgE levels reduction, after the first year of

Food availability affects Osmia pumila (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae) foraging, reproduction, and brood parasitism.

Food limitation can reduce reproductive success directly, as well as indirectly, if foraging imposes a risk of predation or parasitism. The solitary bee Osmia pumila suffers brood parasitism by the cleptoparasitic wasp Sapyga centrata, which enters the host nest to oviposit while the female bee is away. I studied foraging and reproduction of O. pumila nesting within cages stocked with rich or sparse floral resources, and the presence or absence of S. centrata to test (1) the response of nesting female O. pumila to food shortages, (2) the response of nesting female O. pumila to the presence of

Survival of honey bee (Hymenoptera: Apidae) spermatozoa stored at above-freezing temperatures.

The development of practical techniques for the storage of honey bee, Apis mellifera L., semen would significantly improve our ability to breed for desirable genotypes and maintain genetic diversity in populations. Artificial insemination of queens has been possible for some time, but the semen used is usually freshly collected, or held for < 1 wk at room temperature. I examined the limitations of spermatozoal survival at nonfrozen temperatures. Pooled, diluted semen was stored in sealed capillary tubes at room temperature (25 degrees C) or in a refrigerator set to 12 degrees C, for periods up
