Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis: two cases with differing dermatologic syndromes.

Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis is a rare rheumatic condition characterized by ossification and erosion of the clavicle and the first rib, that has been shown to be associated with pustular skin lesions. We present 2 cases, one of which had features of pustulosis palmaris et plantaris and the other dissecting cellulitis of the scalp. Although the dermatologic manifestations differ, both cases have rheumatologic and roentgenographic features diagnostic of sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis.

[Transient idiopathic periosteal hyperostosis with hyperproteinemia (Goldbloom syndrome)].

The case of a 13 year old girl is presented, who developed intense pain in extremities and experienced marked weight loss after an acute upper respiratory tract infection. Roentgenograms revealed a diffuse periosteal reaction, most intensely affecting long bones. Principal laboratory findings were a slight normocytic, normochromic anemia; high erythrocyte sedimentation rate; medullar plasmocytosis and dysproteinemia, with a large increase in plasma gammaglobulin concentration. Clinical recovery and normalization of roentgenograms and laboratory parameters were observed eleven months after the

Infantile cortical hyperostosis (Caffey's disease). Two case reports.

Two cases of infantile cortical hyperostosis (Caffrey's disease) are presented. This syndrome is characterized by diaphyseal cortical swelling of flat bones as well as long bones, often polyostotic but sometimes confirmed to one bone, e.g. the mandible. Prominent clinical features are irritability and painful firm swelling of soft tissues, as well as pallor and subfebrile temperatures. Serological reactions and blood cultures are negative and histological findings are non-specific. Differential diagnosis should account for bone syphilis, hypervitaminosis A, battered child syndrome and osteomye

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis: Etiology and clinical relevance.

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a systemic bone-forming condition characterized by the presence of at least three bony bridges at the anterolateral spine. The aim of this review was to address the present state of pathophysiological knowledge, the clinical relevance, and diagnosis of DISH. The pathogenesis of DISH is currently unknown. The presence of DISH has been associated with older age, male sex, obesity, hypertension, atherosclerosis, and diabetes mellitus. Because the new bone forms mainly at entheseal sites, local fibroblasts, chondrocytes, collagen fibers, and calci

Progressive diffuse idiopathic spinal hyperostosis: a case report.

Diffuse idiopathic spinal hyperostosis (DISH) causes various problems, such as adjacent disc dysfunction, pseudarthrosis, or reossification, when spinal surgery is performed or spinal fracture occurs. The authors herein describe a patient with DISH in whom ossification of the anterior longitudinal ligament progressively advanced from the thoracic to sacral vertebrae during a 14-year period. Surgery was performed three times to treat the characteristic problems associated with DISH: abnormal sagittal alignment of the spine, ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament, reossification of

[Retro-odontoid pseudotumor in diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis].

Retro-odontoid pseudotumors are lesions caused by inflammatory granulation or reactive soft tissue hypertrophy from chronic atlantoaxial subluxation. However, one-third of the cases reported in the medical literature did not show atlantoaxial instability clearly. The authors present the case of a 76-year-old man previously diagnosed with diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis who presented with severe progressive myelopathy. A magnetic resonance imaging of his cervical spine revealed a retro-odontoid predural mass, which caused a severe compression of the cervical spinal cord. The patient un

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis inducted stridor and dysphagia.

Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis (DISH) is a condition characterized by calcification and ossification of soft tissues, mainly ligaments and enthesis. Dysphagia is the commonest complaint, stridor secondary to osteophyte compression has rarely been documented. The osteophytes may cause symptoms by mechanical compression or by inducting inflammatory reaction. When an upper segment of the C-spine is involved, particular C3 - C4 level, the larynx may be affected. This could be result of hoarseness, stridor, laryngeal stenosis and obstruction. Sometimes vocal fold paralysis may result from

Periosteal hyperostosis (exostosis) in DBA/1 male mice.

Periosteal hyperostosis (exostosis) was identified in 5.9% (11/188) of DBA/1 male mice 10-14 weeks old used for collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) efficacy testing of immunomodulatory biologics. Mice with and without CIA in the affected limb, and also control and treated groups, were involved, with bilateral lesions in one mouse. Hyperostosis was characterized by circumferential and raised masses of variable location, length, and laterality, generally external to but occasionally breaching the periosteum of the metatarsals, metacarpals, tibia, femur, and humerus. Proportionally, the hyperostotic

[Clinical manifestations of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH)].

BACKGROUND: Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH, Forestier disease) is in most cases a harmless, asymptomatic disease characterized by a massive, noninflammatory ossification with intensive formation of osteophytes affecting ligaments, tendons, and fasciae, especially of the spinal column. If the disease becomes symptomatic at all, the leading complaints will usually be dysphagia in the sense of a lump in the throat and difficulty in swallowing. However, in rare cases the osteophytes may influence the laryngeal function ranging from hoarseness and immobility of the vocal cord to lif

Eighth cranial nerve dysfunction in hyperostosis cranialis interna.

Hyperostosis cranialis interna is a recently described autosomal dominant bone disorder characterised by hyperostosis and osteosclerosis confined to the skull, especially the calvarium and the skull base. In the affected family members, we found variable simultaneous involvement of cranial nerves I, II, VII and VIII from late childhood onwards, most likely due to nerve entrapment. Auditory and vestibular functions were followed in 3 young family members for 8 years. At the first examination, pure tone audiograms were normal in all 3 cases and case 1 showed no caloric response in the right ear.

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis and situs viscerum inversus.

We describe a 74-year-old woman with diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) and situs viscerum inversus. The radiographic alterations typical of DISH were present only on the left side of her thoracic spine. The role of the thoracic aorta in preventing DISH adjacent to its side and some pathogenetic aspects of this skeletal disorder are discussed.

Esophageal obstruction secondary to diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis.

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis is a disorder of skeletal tissues which most commonly effects elderly white males. Characteristic radiographic findings involve the production of large juxtacortical osteophytes in the absence of degenerative joint changes. The thoracic spine is the most frequently involved portion of the body, followed by the lumbar and cervical spine. Anterior osteophyte formation in the cervical spine may cause symptoms of dysphagia secondary to esophageal obstruction. These symptoms can be successfully treated by anterior osteophyte resection.

[Prenatal diagnosis of Caffey's disease (infantile cortical hyperostosis)].

Report of the 10th case of infantile cortical hyperostosis (ICH), diagnosed in utero. Because of a hydramnion noted in the 29th week of gestation, a 38 years old pregnant women was admitted to hospital. Ultrasound, radiographs of the unborn child and amninography were obtained. The radiographic and clinical signs of Caffey's disease are reviewed, and the literature particularly reports on prenatal onset are analyzed. The present "etiologic theories" are discussed.

HLA antigens in vertebral ankylosing hyperostosis (Forestier's disease).

Vertebral ankylosing hyperostosis (VAH) represents a chronic spinal disorder that is often difficult to differentiate both from the inflammatory involvement of the spine like ankylosing spondylitis (Bechterew--AS) and from several forms of spondylosis or paravertebral ossifications of psoriatic spondylitis. Shapiro (1, 2) observed a significantly higher frequency of HLA antigen B27 in 47 patients with VAH; but this observation could not be confirmed by other authors. In our group of 46 patients with VAH, most of them males, there were no X ray signs of sacroiliitis. Compared with 1210 healthy

Treatment of Thoracolumbar Spinal Fracture Accompanied by Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis Using Transdiscal Screws for Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis: Preliminary Results.

STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective case series enrolled 13 patients who underwent posterior fixation with both transdiscal screws for diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (TSDs) and pedicle screws (PSs) to treat spinal injury accompanied by diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH). PURPOSE: To describe the usefulness, feasibility, and biomechanics of TSD. OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: Vertebral bodies accompanied by DISH generally have lower bone mineral density than normal vertebral bodies because of the stress shielding effect. This phenomenon tends to makes screw fixation challenging.

Acute Laryngeal Dyspnoea Revealing Anterior Cervical Hyperostosis (Forestier's Disease).

UNLABELLED: Forestier's disease, or diffuse idiopathic spinal hyperostosis, can exceptionally lead to acute obstruction of the upper airways when the hyperostosis is located in the cervical region. We report the case of an 87-year-old man admitted for acute inspiratory dyspnoea and progressive dysphonia. Endoscopic examination confirmed left laryngeal paralysis and pharyngolaryngeal oedema. Imaging revealed a large anterior hyperostosis compressing the airway. This case illustrates the interaction between mechanical compression, local inflammation, and chronic laryngeal paralysis, which can le
