Perceived susceptibility to illness and perceived benefits of preventive care: an exploration of behavioral theory constructs in a transcultural context.

This article describes how the social context of transculturation (cultural change processes) and transmigration (migration in which relationships are sustained across national boundaries) can directly influence use of mammography screening. The authors conducted semistructured interviews with Latino and Filipino academics and social service providers and with U.S.-born and immigrant Latinas and Filipinas to explore direct and indirect influences of social context on health behavior (Behavioral Constructs and Culture in Cancer Screening study). Iterative analyses identified themes of the trans

Racial differences in hepatitis B and hepatitis C and associated risk behaviors in veterans with severe mental illness.

Racial differences in the seroprevalence of and risks for hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV) were examined in military veterans with severe mental illnesses (SMI). Participants (376; 155 Caucasian, 221 African American) were inpatients at a Veterans Affairs (VA) psychiatric unit in Durham, N.C., from 1998 to 2000. Prevalence rates of HBV and HCV were 21.3% and 18.9%, respectively. African Americans had a higher HBV seroprevalence than did Caucasians: 27.6% versus 12.3%; odds ratio (OR) 2.73; 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.55, 4.79. Although not statistically significant, HCV seroprevalenc

Precision in progress: a scoping review of SMART designs in adaptive behavioral interventions for individuals with a chronic physical and/or mental illness.

BACKGROUND: Traditional randomized controlled trials are limited in their ability to inform the development of adaptive interventions tailored to the needs of individuals with a chronic physical and/or mental illness. Sequential Multiple Assignment Randomized Trials (SMARTs) provide a rigorous design for developing and evaluating adaptive interventions. PURPOSE: This scoping review examined the application of SMARTs to develop and evaluate adaptive behavioral interventions for individuals with a chronic physical and/or mental illness. METHODS: A search was conducted in 4 electronic databases

Rural-urban prescribing patterns by primary care and behavioral health providers in older adults with serious mental illness.

BACKGROUND: Older adults with serious mental illness (SMI) often have multiple comorbidities and complex medication schedules. Shortages of behavioral health specialists (BHSs), especially in rural areas, frequently make primary care providers (PCPs) the only clinician managing this complex population. The aim of this study was to describe rural/urban psychiatric medication prescribing in older adults with SMI by PCPs and BHSs, and by clinician type. METHODS: This retrospective descriptive analysis used 2018 Medicare data to identify individuals with a bipolar, major depression, schizophrenia

Interventions to Address Medical Conditions and Health-Risk Behaviors Among Persons With Serious Mental Illness: A Comprehensive Review.

People with serious mental illness (SMI) have mortality rates 2 to 3 times higher than the overall US population, largely due to cardiovascular disease. The prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors such as obesity and diabetes mellitus and other conditions, such as HIV/AIDS, is heightened in this group. Based on the recommendations of a National Institute of Mental Health stakeholder meeting, we conducted a comprehensive review examining the strength of the evidence surrounding interventions to address major medical conditions and health-risk behaviors among persons with SMI. Acute illness-induced behavioral alterations are similar to those observed during withdrawal from acute alcohol exposure.

Exposure to an immunogen results in a constellation of behavioral changes collectively referred to as "sickness behaviors," with alterations in cytokine expression previously shown to contribute to this sickness response. Since behaviors observed during ethanol withdrawal are strikingly similar to sickness behaviors, we hypothesized that behavioral manifestations of ethanol withdrawal might be an expression of sickness behaviors induced by ethanol-related changes in peripheral and/or central cytokine expression. Accordingly, behaviors exhibited during a modified social investigation test were

Understanding self-care behaviors in older adults with chronic diseases: The influence of personal views on aging and illness perceptions.

The global rise in Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) due to population aging poses significant challenges for healthcare systems. Self-care is crucial for managing NCDs, yet older adults often struggle to engage in these behaviors. Psychological factors like personal Views on Aging (VoA) and Illness Perceptions (IP) influence health behaviors, but how these factors correlate with each other and their relevance to Self-Care Maintenance (SCM) in older adults with NCDs remain underexplored. This cross-sectional study examined the associations among Awareness of Age-Related Changes (AARC-Gains; AAR

A pilot study: Positive behavioral support assessment and intervention for individuals with serious mental illness and criminal justice involvement.

Individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) are consistently interfacing with the criminal justice (CJ) system. They are overrepresented in our nation's prisons and jails rather than being in appropriate treatment settings. They also exhibit behavioral challenges in such CJ settings that result in rule violations leading to punitive consequences, such as segregation and isolation, which have deleterious effects on their mental health and well-being. Individuals with SMI who are incarcerated also make up the majority of suicide attempts and stay longer than those without SMI. Positive Behavio

Care-seeking behaviors for maternal and newborn illnesses among self-help group households in Uttar Pradesh, India.

BACKGROUND: India has made large strides in reducing maternal mortality ratio and neonatal mortality rate, yet care-seeking behavior for appropriate care is still a challenge. We conducted a qualitative study to understand the process of recognition and care-seeking for maternal and newborn illnesses in rural India where a health intervention through women's self-help groups (SHG) to improve maternal and newborn health behaviors is implemented by a non-governmental organization, the Rajiv Gandhi Mahila Vikas Pariyojana. The study aimed to understand the process of recognition and care-seeking

Using incentives to reduce substance use and other health risk behaviors among people with serious mental illness.

INTRODUCTION: Serious mental illness (SMI) is associated with high rates of tobacco and other drug dependence, poor treatment compliance, obesity and low levels of physical activity, which have severe medical and psychosocial consequences. Interventions that effectively reduce these health risk behaviors among people with SMI are urgently needed. METHODS: Published reports from studies evaluating incentive-based treatments for promoting tobacco and other drug abstinence, treatment attendance, medication use and increased physical activity are reviewed. RESULTS: Results of this review indicat

Sex-related alcohol expectancies predict sexual risk behavior among severely and persistently mentally ill adults.

Three hundred three adults (57% male, average age 42 years) with severe and persistent mental illness receiving treatment at community mental health clinics completed a survey, which included B. C. Leigh's (1990) sex-related alcohol expectancy scale and measures of alcohol use and sexual risk behavior. Hierarchical logistic regression analyses, controlling for drinking behavior, revealed that participants with stronger expectancies that drinking would lead to enhanced sexual experience were more likely to have drank prior to intercourse and that, among participants who drank prior to intercour

The extra burden: differential somatization-moderated mediation models of anxiety, depression, and insomnia on quality of life through abnormal illness behavior in Chinese college students.

BACKGROUND: Psychological distress (anxiety, depression, insomnia) is prevalent among college students, often co-occurring with somatization and abnormal illness behavior (AIB) to impair quality of life (QoL). This study aims to construct moderated mediation models exploring the association between psychological distress and QoL through AIB, and examine the moderating role of somatization, providing evidence for targeted mental health interventions. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 7,529 Chinese college students was conducted. Anxiety, depression, and insomnia were treated as predictors,
