The specificity of contrast-enhanced breast MR imaging.

The sensitivity of contrast-enhanced breast MR imaging for malignancy is close to 100%, an improvement over traditional methods of cancer detection. The reported specificity of breast MR imaging, however, ranges from approximately 37% to 97%. This range of values is the result of differences in technique and diagnostic criteria. The variation in biologic activity and vascularity of benign and malignant lesions, as well as normal tissue, also complicates MR imaging diagnosis. A review of breast MR imaging research with an emphasis on specificity issues is also presented.

Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging of the breast.

Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of 28 patients with known breast tumors was compared with clinical findings and histopathology, and for 12 of the patients also with mammography. The dynamic measurements performed in 18 patients showed that signal intensity in gradient echo (FFE) images increased rapidly in malignant tumors after contrast injection and reached a plateau level at 1-3 min postcontrast. Fibroadenomas showed slower contrast enhancement continuing throughout the whole examination period of 10 min. The most enhancing parts of the tumors were selected for intensity

Is Bell's palsy a bilateral condition? A temporal magnetic resonance image analysis of contrast enhancement across all segments of the facial nerve.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the contrast enhancement values in the facial nerve segments using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and to examine the association with clinical progress in Bell's palsy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Temporal MRI images of 90 adult patients with Bell's palsy and 45 individuals without facial nerve pathology (control group) were analyzed retrospectively. Each of the five intratemporal segments of the facial nerve was delineated bilaterally, and quantitative values obtained using point-shaped ROI (region of interest) were recorded. These values were compared between the affect

BrightVAE: luminosity enhancement in underexposed endoscopic images.

PURPOSE: Low-light endoscopic images often lack contrast and clarity, obscuring anatomical details and reducing diagnostic accuracy. This study develops a method to enhance image brightness and visibility, enabling clearer visualization of critical structures to support precise medical diagnoses and improve patient outcomes. METHODS: To specifically address nonuniform illumination, we propose BrightVAE, a model that uses a dual-receptive-field architecture to decouple global brightness correction from local texture preservation. Integrated attention-based modules (Attencoder and Attenquant) e

Factors Affecting Contrast Enhancement on CT Images.

CT scans use iodinated contrast media (ICM) to increase enhancement of soft-tissue structures. Some techniques, such as CT angiography, accentuate specific anatomy. The chemical structure of ICM is rich in iodine. Because of iodine's high atomic number, use of ICM causes an increase in CT number and image contrast. Improper contrast enhancement is a leading motivator for both repeated CT examinations and those with limited or suboptimal diagnostic utility. Optimization of contrast agent administration is essential to avoid poor enhancement. Many interacting factors affect contrast enhancement

Contrast-enhanced super-resolution imaging of the liver.

The present review of the most common liver lesions describes the possibilities for using the novel super-resolution contrast-enhanced ultrasound technique. There are advantages for visualizing the microvasculature and thus for the characterization of a vascular pattern: in the arterial phase as benign and regular or as malignant and irregular. In the case of hepatocellular carcinomas, small irregular focal lesions or signs of remaining tumor or early tumor recurrence after partial tumor resection or ablation can be identified. Benign tumors usually have a regular vascular pattern. Especially

Imaging Microbubbles With Contrast-Enhanced Endobronchial Ultrasound.

OBJECTIVE: Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) is commonly used to guide transbronchial needle biopsies for the staging of lymph nodes in non-small cell lung cancer patients. Although contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) and microbubbles (MBs) can improve the diagnostic accuracy in tumors, the ability of contrast-enhanced EBUS (CE-EBUS) to image MBs has not yet been comprehensively evaluated. In this study, we assessed the ability of a CE-EBUS system (Olympus EU-ME2 PREMIER and BF-UC180F bronchoscope) to detect laboratory-synthesized MBs in comparison to clinical (Toshiba Aplio SSA-790A) and pre-cl

Manganese-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Heart.

Manganese-based contrast media were the first in vivo paramagnetic agents to be used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The uniqueness of manganese lies in its biological function as a calcium channel analog, thus behaving as an intracellular contrast agent. Manganese ions are taken up by voltage-gated calcium channels in viable tissues, such as the liver, pancreas, kidneys, and heart, in response to active calcium-dependent cellular processes. Manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MEMRI) has therefore been used as a surrogate marker for cellular calcium handling and interest in its

Contrast-enhanced ultrasound perfusion imaging of organs.

In multimodal radiologic imaging, contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is increasingly used. One of the advantages of CEUS is the possibility of repeated application of contrast media without decreasing renal function or affecting the thyroid gland. Small solid liver lesions can be diagnosed and detected with high accuracy. Moreover, solid lesions in other abdominal organs can also be characterized. Frequent applications for solid lesions in the near field concern thyroid tumors and lymph nodes. For prostate diagnostics, CEUS can be used with an endorectal probe and perfusion imaging. This revi

Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound in Renal Imaging and Intervention.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In recent years, there has been renewed interest in the use of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in abdominal imaging and intervention. The goal of this article is to review the practical applications of CEUS in the kidney, including renal mass characterization, treatment monitoring during and after percutaneous ablation, and biopsy guidance. RECENT FINDINGS: Current evidence suggests that CEUS allows accurate differentiation of solid and cystic renal masses and is an acceptable alternative to either computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for charact

[Contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging of the carotid artery].

A conventional grey scale, Doppler sonography and color-coded Doppler ultrasound examination should be the first step in the diagnosis of the vessels supplying the brain and have a major impact in diagnostic imaging. This ultrasound examination allows the simultaneous acquisition of morphologic and hemodynamic information with high spatial and temporal resolution. Most of the pathological changes of the extracranial arteries can thus be reliably detected. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is a promising new non-invasive method for the diagnosis and follow-up of complex carotid abnormalities.

[Oxygen-enhanced functional MR lung imaging].

Current diagnostic tools for the assessment of lung function are limited by global measurements or the need for radioactive tracers. Ideally, these tools should allow quantitative, regional distinct analyses without exposure to radiation. The current paper presents oxygen-enhanced functional MRI for assessment of lung ventilation. First applied in humans in 1996, a considerable amount of experience is now available on 1.5T scanners. The generation of quantitative T1-maps shows a high clinical potential. Low-field MR scanners, which are mostly open-designed, are especially interesting for funct

MR imaging of spondylitis with gadopentetate dimeglumine enhancement.

MR images of 17 patients with spondylitis were reviewed. T1 weighted spin-echo scans were obtained in 17 patients and proton density and T2 weighted scans were obtained in 15 patients. Unenhanced and gadopentetate dimeglumine enhanced scans were obtained in all patients. Five patients had pyogenic spondylitis, two patients tuberculous spondylitis, two patients fungal spondylitis and eight patients postoperative spondylitis. The four criteria described by Thrush and Enzmann were generally applicable in our study: 1) narrowing of the intervertebral disc; 2) cortical bone erosion; 3) abnormal sig

Structure enhancement by subtraction in magnetic resonance imaging.

Two patients with tumours in the pituitary gland and the liver, respectively, were studied with MRI. Regions of different transverse relaxation times were found in the tumours. Subtraction of images recorded with different echo times demonstrated the tumour regions better than the original images although these were recorded with 2 repetition times and double and multiple echo sequences. Subtraction techniques may thus aid diagnosis in MRI.

Simplified image acquisition and detection of ischemic and non-ischemic myocardial fibrosis with fixed short inversion time magnetic resonance late gadolinium enhancement.

OBJECTIVES: Late gadolinium enhancement with fixed short inversion time (LGEshort) provides excellent tissue contrast with dark scar and bright blood pool and does not need prior myocardial nulling. We hypothesize better visibility of ischemic scars and equal visibility of non-ischemic LGE in LGEshort compared to clinically established LGE (LGEstandard). METHODS: LGEshort and LGEstandard were retrospectively evaluated in 179 patients (3043 segments) with suspected or known coronary artery disease by four blinded readers (reader A: most experienced - D: least experienced). The amount of ischem

Verification of threshold for image intensity ratio analyses of late gadolinium enhancement magnetic resonance imaging of left atrial fibrosis in 1.5T scans.

The use of cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging left atrial late gadolinium enhancement (LA LGE) is increasing for fibrosis evaluation though the use is still limited to specialized centres due to complex image acquisition and lack of consensus on image analyses. Analysis of LA LGE with image intensity ratio (IIR) (pixel intensity of atrial wall normalized by blood pool intensity) provides an objective method to obtain quantitative data on atrial fibrosis. A threshold between healthy myocardium and fibrosis of 1.2 has previously been established in 3T scans. The aim of the study was to re
