The Relationship between Motor, Imitation, and Early Social Communication Skills in Children with Autism.

Objective: Development of early social skills in children is a complex process. To understand this process, it is important to assess how strengths or weaknesses in other developmental domains may be affected by these skills. The present study aimed at investigating the association of motor skills and imitation ability with early social communication skills in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Method: In this study, 20 children with ASD aged 3 to 5 years (M = 4.05, SD = 0.55) participated. All children were diagnosed as ASD based on the DSM-V criteria by an independent child psychi

Self-other relations in social development and autism: multiple roles for mirror neurons and other brain bases.

Mirror neuron system dysfunction may underlie a self-other matching impairment, which has previously been suggested to account for autism. Embodied Cognition Theory, which proposes that action provides a foundation for cognition has lent further credence to these ideas. The hypotheses of a self-other matching deficit and impaired mirror neuron function in autism have now been well supported by studies employing a range of methodologies. However, underlying mechanisms require further exploration to explain how mirror neurons may be involved in attentional and mentalizing processes. Impairments

Giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath of the toe imitating macrodactyly: case report.

The authors present a case of giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath (GCTTS) imitating macrodactyly macroscopically. They give an overview of the differential diagnosis of macrodactyly, the behavior of GCTTS, its most frequent localizations, the scope of surgical procedures available in cases of the disproportionate enlargement of a digit, and also of earlier GCTTS cases recorded in the files of the Orthopedic Clinic of the Semmelweis University.

Virtual reality technology enhances the cognitive and social communication of children with autism spectrum disorder.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to explore the impact of using virtual reality technology to intervene in and encourage the developmental behavior areas of cognition, imitation, and social interaction in children with autism spectrum disorder. METHODS: Forty-four children with autism spectrum disorder were divided randomly into an intervention group and a control group, with each group consisting of 22 participants. Incorporating conventional rehabilitation strategies, virtual reality technology was used with the intervention group to conduct rehabilitation training in areas including cognition, imitatio

Neonatal Mimicry of Caregivers at Home: Feasibility of an Asynchronous Online Paradigm.

While early life sets the stage for later learning, comparatively less is known about newborns' cognition than that of older infants. A striking example is the lack of consensus regarding the extent to which newborns spontaneously mimic gestures, and whether such behavior drives bonding and learning. Despite the theoretical importance of these questions, practical challenges limit researchers' ability to engage newborns in behavioral research. Webcam-based, asynchronous online studies have expanded developmental science's capacity to reach older infants. However, such scalable and replicable m

Imitation-based aphasia therapy increases narrative content: a case series.

OBJECTIVE: To test the generalization of an intensive imitation-based aphasia therapy to an unrelated narrative production task. DESIGN: ABA design study (A= no treatment; B= treatment) comparing imitation therapy to a baseline condition (pre-therapy). Participants produced narratives at two pre-therapy and two post-therapy time points. Narratives were analyzed for correct information units to determine the number and percent of communicative words produced. SETTING: A rehabilitation clinic and participants' homes. PARTICIPANTS: Nineteen people with chronic aphasia following left hemisphere

Dynamic horizontal cultural transmission of humpback whale song at the ocean basin scale.

Cultural transmission, the social learning of information or behaviors from conspecifics, is believed to occur in a number of groups of animals, including primates, cetaceans, and birds. Cultural traits can be passed vertically (from parents to offspring), obliquely (from the previous generation via a nonparent model to younger individuals), or horizontally (between unrelated individuals from similar age classes or within generations). Male humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) have a highly stereotyped, repetitive, and progressively evolving vocal sexual display or "song" that functions in

Generalized imitation of facial models by children with autism.

Imitation is an essential skill in the acquisition of language and communication skills. An initial phase in teaching young children with autism to engage in appropriate affective responding may be to teach the imitation of facial models. Using a multiple baseline across participants design, imitation training (consisting of modeling, prompting, differential reinforcement, and error correction) was introduced successively across 3 participants. Low and inconsistent rates of imitation of facial models were observed in baseline. All of the participants learned to imitate some of the facial model

Defective imitation of gestures in patients with damage in the left or right hemispheres.

OBJECTIVES: Defective imitation of meaningless gestures has repeatedly been demonstrated in patients with apraxia and has been interpreted as being due to a deficit of motor execution. There is, however, controversy as to whether some impairment of imitation also occurs in patients with right brain damage. The aim was to compare defective imitation in patients with left and right brain damage and to explore whether there are qualitative differences between them. METHODS: Imitation was examined in 80 patients with left brain damage (LBD) and aphasia, 40 patients with right brain damage (RBD),

Teaching self-catheterization skills to children with neurogenic bladder complications.

We examined the effects of simulation training on the acquisition of self-catheterization skills in 2 female children with spina bifida. Based on a task analysis, the children were taught to perform on a doll each of the components of preparation, and, using a mirror to locate the urinary meatus, to insert and remove the catheter and to clean-up. Before, during, and after training, the children's performance of the skills on the doll and on themselves was assessed. Results of a multiple baseline design across subjects and skill components showed that doll training facilitated the children's ac

Exploring Cues of Reciprocity in Third-Party Word Learning.

This study examined how toddlers learn novel words by observing two adults interact in third-party contexts. Specifically, we examined whether toddlers show stronger evidence of selective referent identification for labeled objects in third-party contexts and how word learning may be supported by cues of reciprocity between adult interlocutors, including physical exchange of the object, verbal exchange about the object, and/or the adult listener's response to the information provided. Toddlers (n = 64, Mage = 29.9 mos., SD = 1.7 mos) were assigned to one of four conditions: Object Exchange + A

Modeling of visuospatial perspectives processing and modulation of the fronto-parietal network activity during action imitation.

It has been suggested that the human mirror neuron system (MNS) plays a critical role in action observation and imitation. However, the transformation of perspective between the observed (allocentric) and the imitated (egocentric) actions has received little attention. We expand a previously proposed biologically plausible MNS model by incorporating general spatial transformation capabilities that are assumed to be encoded by the intraparietal sulcus (IPS) and the superior parietal lobule (SPL) as well as investigating their interactions with the inferior frontal gyrus and the inferior parieta

Perceptual differences in fetal alcohol effect boys performing a modeling task.

Perceptual differences were examined for four boys identified with fetal alcohol effect (FAE) and labeled learning disabled for educational purposes. Without a model, all FAE boys built asymmetrical building block designs with no stacking of blocks. When the boys were shown a short videotape of a peer building a simple symmetrical structure with one-layer stacking of blocks, none of the FAE boys successfully imitated. They continued to place blocks randomly on the floor surface with no stacking or layering. This limited study suggests modeling perceptual tasks may not be an effective teaching

The executive and ideational components of apraxia.

Fifty six left brain-damaged (LBD) patients and 38 right brain-damaged (RBD) patients were requested to perform two measures of praxis using the hand ipsilateral to the side of lesion. One task required the accurate imitation of actions made by the examiner and taxed executive abilities; the other task required the patient to pantomime the use of objects that were shown, but not handed, and it also involved an ideational component, i.e., the evocation of gestures. The cut-off point discriminating a normal from a pathological performance was set at the level of the poorest score found in 60 con

The Effects of Maternal Mirroring on the Development of Infant Social Expressiveness: The Case of Infant Cleft Lip.

Parent-infant social interactions start early in development, with infants showing active communicative expressions by just two months. A key question is how this social capacity develops. Maternal mirroring of infant expressions is considered an important, intuitive, parenting response, but evidence is sparse in the first two months concerning the conditions under which mirroring occurs and its developmental sequelae, including in clinical samples where the infant's social expressiveness may be affected. We investigated these questions by comparing the development of mother-infant interaction

Respiratory units of motor production and song imitation in the zebra finch.

Juvenile male zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) learn a stereotyped song by imitating sounds from adult male tutors. Their song is composed of a series of syllables, which are separated by silent periods. How acoustic units of song are translated into respiratory and syringeal motor gestures during the song learning process is not well understood. To learn about the respiratory contribution to the imitation process, we recorded air sac pressure in 38 male zebra finches and compared the acoustic structures and air sac pressure patterns of similar syllables qualitatively and quantitatively. The role of consensus and culture in children's imitation of inefficient actions.

A significant body of work has demonstrated children's imitative abilities when learning novel actions. Although some research has examined the role of cultural background in children's imitation of inefficient actions, to our knowledge no research has explored how culture and conformity interact when engaging in imitation. In Study 1, 87 Caucasian American and Chinese American preschoolers were presented with either one model or three models performing an inefficient action. Whereas there were no cultural differences in imitation in the Single Model condition, Chinese Americans were significa

The effect of a self-management training package on the transfer of aggression control procedures in the absence of supervision.

An aggression replacement and self-management training package reduced the frequency of aggressive behavior among four junior high adolescents identified as seriously emotionally disturbed (SED). During baseline sessions, the students were covertly filmed as they stood unsupervised in front of the school cafeteria. The four subjects engaged in aggressive behavior during 50% of the filmed intervals. These episodes involved provocation by other students, self-initiated provocation, or continuing interaction between students once an aggressive episode had begun. Treatment procedures included inst

Autonomous driving using imitation learning with look ahead point for semi structured environments.

Semi-structured environments are difficult for autonomous driving because there are numerous unknown obstacles in drivable area without lanes, and its width and curvature considerably change. In such environments, searching for a path on a real-time is difficult, and localization data are inaccurate, reducing path tracking accuracy. Instead, alternative methods that reactively avoid obstacles in real-time using candidate paths or an artificial potential field have been studied. However, these require heuristics to identify specific parameters for handling various environments and are vulnerabl
