Cardiac responses induced during thought-based control of a virtual environment.

Cardiac responses induced by motor imagery were investigated in 3 subjects in a series of experiments with a synchronous (cue-based) Brain-Computer Interface (BCI). The cue specified right hand vs. leg/foot motor imagery. After a number of BCI training sessions reaching a classification accuracy of at least 80%, the BCI experiments were carried out in an immersive virtual environment (VE), commonly referred as a "CAVE". In this VE, the subjects were able to move along a virtual street by motor imagery alone. The thought-based control of VE resulted in an acceleration of the heart rate in 2 sub

Cold modalities with different thermodynamic properties have similar effects on muscular performance and activation.

Although tissue cooling is widely used in the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries there is still controversy about its effects on muscular performance. The combination of cooling and exercise justifies the study of this topic. The aim was to compare the effects of ice pack and cold-water immersion on the muscular performance parameters of plantar flexors and muscular activation of the triceps surae. 41 healthy men (mean age: 22.1 years, SD: 2.9) were randomly assigned to cooling with either ice pack (n=20) or cold-water immersion (n=21). Independent variables were cold modality (ice pack or

Cortical effects of anticipation and endogenous modulation of visceral pain assessed by functional brain MRI in irritable bowel syndrome patients and healthy controls.

Visceral pain processing is abnormal in a majority of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients. Aberrant endogenous nociceptive modulation and anticipation are possible underlying mechanisms investigated in the current study. Twelve IBS patients and 12 matched healthy controls underwent brain fMRI scanning during the following randomised stimuli: sham and painful rectal distensions by barostat without and with simultaneous activation of endogenous descending nociceptive inhibition using ice water immersion of the foot for heterotopic stimulation. Heterotopic stimulation decreased rectal pain sc

Enhancement of thermal response of normal and malignant tissues by Corynebacterium parvum.

Further studies were carried out on the combined effects of Corynebacterium parvum and hyperthermia on animal tissues and cultured Chinese hamster ovary cells. Experimental animals were C3Hf/Sed mice derived from our defined flora mouse colony. Tumors were eighth-generation isotransplants of a spontaneous fibrosarcoma, FSa-II. Hyperthermia was given by immersing the mouse foot or culture flasks in the constant temperature water bath. Present experiments include thermal enhancement of C. parvum at different temperatures, effect of the agent on the kinetics of thermal resistance, and the mechani

Virtual Reality in Ophthalmic Surgical Education: Current Innovations and Future Perspectives.

Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies have recently gained momentum in medical education and show particular promise for ophthalmic surgical training. VR creates immersive, computer-generated environments for simulated learning, whereas AR enhances the real-world by superimposing interactive digital elements. Traditional microsurgical training relies on wet-lab practice using model or cadaver eyes, as well as operative experience on live patients. The educational value of wet-lab training often depends on time-intensive direct supervision by a senior surgeon, while early

Severe Erythromelalgia Pain Attack in a Young Lebanese Woman Leading to Hospitalization: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Erythromelalgia is a rare neurovascular syndrome characterized by intense, episodic burning pain that primarily affects the feet and hands and, occasionally, the face. Symptoms are often triggered by heat and exercise, with relief typically achieved through cooling methods. However, improper use of these techniques can lead to serious complications, such as trench foot and cellulitis. The condition can also have significant psychological effects, contributing to anxiety and depression. An 18-year-old Lebanese woman with primary erythromelalgia and a family history of the condition presented wi

Computer-controlled epidural infusion to targeted cerebrospinal fluid concentrations in humans. Clonidine.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacokinetically designed infusions have been demonstrated to achieve rapidly and maintain desired concentrations of drug in plasma after intravenous administration. In this study we tested whether a similar approach, targeting concentrations in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), could be used with epidural administration of the alpha 2-adrenergic analgesic clonidine. METHODS: After institutional review board approval and informed consent had been obtained, seven healthy volunteers received a clonidine infusion through a lower lumbar epidural catheter. Infusion of clonidine (10 microgr

Underwater Gesture Recognition Meta-Gloves for Marine Immersive Communication.

Rapid advancements in immersive communications and artificial intelligence have created a pressing demand for high-performance tactile sensing gloves capable of delivering high sensitivity and a wide sensing range. Unfortunately, existing tactile sensing gloves fall short in terms of user comfort and are ill-suited for underwater applications. To address these limitations, we propose a flexible hand gesture recognition glove (GRG) that contains high-performance micropillar tactile sensors (MPTSs) inspired by the flexible tube foot of a starfish. The as-prepared flexible sensors offer a wide wo

MXene-Sponge Based High-Performance Piezoresistive Sensor for Wearable Biomonitoring and Real-Time Tactile Sensing.

Electrode microfabrication technologies such as lithography and deposition have been widely applied in wearable electronics to boost interfacial coupling efficiency and device performance. However, a majority of these approaches are restricted by expensive and complicated processing techniques, as well as waste discharge. Here, helium plasma irradiation is employed to yield a molybdenum microstructured electrode, which is constructed into a flexible piezoresistive pressure sensor based on a Ti3 C2 Tx nanosheet-immersed polyurethane sponge. This electrode engineering strategy enables the smooth

Combined effect of heat, essential oils and salt on fungicidal activity against Trichophyton mentagrophytes in a foot bath.

This work was originally undertaken to determine the effective conditions of essential oils against Trichophyton mentagrophytes in vitro for the treatment of tinea pedis in a foot bath. Agar blocks implanted with T. mentagrophytes were immersed in 0.1% aqueous agar containing two-fold dilutions of essential oils with or without sodium chloride at 27 degrees C, 37 degrees C and 42 degrees C for 10 and 20 min. The number of surviving mycelia on the agar blocks was determined from the standard curves of the colony diameter and original inocula of the conidia. At the same time, the thermal effect

Placing the leading limb closer to an obstacle reduces collision of the trailing limb: an investigation in a virtual environment.

INTRODUCTION: When walking and stepping over an obstacle of a certain height, tripping occurs more frequently with the trailing limb than the leading limb. The present study was designed to address whether collisions involving the trailing limb can be improved with experimental manipulation of the placement of the leading limb after stepping over an obstacle. We used an immersive, virtual obstacle-crossing task to ensure that the collision was not improved simply due to the experience of physical collision with an obstacle. METHODS: Fourteen young participants (12 males and 2 females, 28.7 ±

Passive heat therapy for cardiovascular disease: current evidence and future directions.

Passive heat therapy is gaining popularity as an intervention to promote cardiovascular, physiological, and, to a lesser degree, thermoregulatory adaptations in patients with cardiovascular disease. Despite this, the efficacy of heat therapy to elicit these adaptations remains unknown. We searched five databases for original research, screening 2913 studies and identifying 18 eligible studies. Heat therapies included Waon therapy, balneotherapy, water perfused trousers, Finnish sauna, and foot immersion. Interventions were administered across various time frames (20-90 min) and performed 3-7 t

Charity Scott, Bioethics, and Health Law.

As Steve Kaminshine said in his comments at the symposium honoring Charity Scott, I was recruited to come to Georgia State University as a "Law and Bioethics" scholar who had spent more than sixteen years shuttling between an office in a hospital and another in a law school. But when I first visited Georgia State Law, I did not know that more than ten years earlier Charity Scott had spent the better part of an academic year living and breathing clinical ethics at Grady Memorial Hospital.1 Because of her usual habit of immersion in all learning experiences, in that year Charity gained more insi

3D-Printed Double-Helical Biodegradable Iron Suture Anchor: A Rabbit Rotator Cuff Tear Model.

Suture anchors are extensively used in rotator cuff tear surgery. With the advancement of three-dimensional printing technology, biodegradable metal has been developed for orthopedic applications. This study adopted three-dimensional-printed biodegradable Fe suture anchors with double-helical threads and commercialized non-vented screw-type Ti suture anchors with a tapered tip in the experimental and control groups, respectively. The in vitro study showed that the Fe and Ti suture anchors exhibited a similar ultimate failure load in 20-pound-per-cubic-foot polyurethane foam blocks and rabbit b

Skin diseases in displaced populations: a review of contributing factors, challenges, and approaches to care.

There are 70.8 million persons displaced worldwide due to war, persecution, and violence. Eighty percent of displaced persons reside in low- and middle-income countries with limited healthcare resources. Cutaneous diseases are commonly reported among displaced persons owing to numerous interrelated factors such as inadequate housing, overcrowding, food insecurity, environmental exposures, violence including torture, and breakdown of healthcare infrastructure. Diagnosis and management of these conditions, as well as an understanding of the context in which they present, is crucial to providing

Sea-urchin envenomation.

Sea-urchin stings may produce injurious and venomous wounds. Although numerous writers refer to the danger of pedicellarial stings, there is little worth-while clinical data. We report a case of sea-urchin injury with severe local reaction and acute hepatitis. A 47-y-o Taiwanese woman accidentally stepped on a sea urchin while scuba diving on a beach in Palau Islands. The puncture wounds were numerous and she felt faintness, and immediate and intense pain. Initial management included partial spine removal, betadine immersion, intravenous fluid and analgesics. She developed fever, chills, nause
