Using immunoelectronmicroscopic techniques, we have demonstrated three distincet patterns of IgA deposition in the skin of patients with dermatitis herpetiforms. The least common of these patterns is the localization of reaction products to the lamina lucida. As this is the location of the immunoreactants in bullous pemphigoid and herpes gestationis and because the ultrastructural findings in our patient's early lesional skin differ from those usually seen in patients with dermatitis herpetiformis, we herein detail this patient's clinical, histologic, immunologic, and ultrastructural findings.

BACKGROUND: Impression cytology is a non invasive technique for the diagnosis of external eye disease. As infected epithelial cells are losing their adhesion to neighbouring cells they are an ideal target for impression cytology. The present study was carried out on 429 children below 6 years of age from a village in Bani-Suef governorate to show the schistosomiasis prevalence rate among them. Direct sedimentation techniques of the urine and stool beside an indirect serological test (Dot-ELISA) were used for the diagnosis. In analogy to the immunological method for detecting the presence of cysticercosis in cattle we examined the applicability of the indirect immunofluorescence reaction as a technique for detecting taeniasis in man in 200 sera of tapeworm carriers and 150 sera of controls. This report summarizes the available information on the immunology of filariasis, and discusses immunodiagnosis and the immunological factors influencing the host-parasite relationship in lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis. Several areas that require further research are identified, particularly concerning the development of new serological techniques, and the fractionation of specific antigens. The problems associated with vaccine development are considered and the importance of finding better animal models for research is stressed.
