Sleep-Related Infant Deaths: Updated 2022 Recommendations for Reducing Infant Deaths in the Sleep Environment.

Each year in the United States, ∼3500 infants die of sleep-related infant deaths, including sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) (International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision [ICD-10] R95), ill-defined deaths (ICD-10 R99), and accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed (ICD-10 W75). After a substantial decline in sleep-related deaths in the 1990s, the overall death rate attributable to sleep-related infant deaths has remained stagnant since 2000, and disparities persist. The triple risk model proposes that SIDS occurs when an infant with intrinsic vulnerability (often manifested

Heart weight in infants--a comparison between sudden infant death syndrome and other causes of death.

UNLABELLED: Heart and body weights were compared with regard to heart pathology and cause of death in well-defined groups of infants under 1 y of age. In the period 1980 to 1998, out of 468 infants autopsied at the Department of Forensic Medicine in Stockholm, Sweden, 331 died of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), while 137 died of other causes. Physical violence was the known cause of death in 30 infants and cardiovascular malformations in another 19. Inflammatory alterations of the myocardium were found in 74 cases (16%): in 17 cases (3.6%) myocarditis was interpreted as the main cause of

Infant mortality statistics from the linked birth/infant death data set--1995 period data.

OBJECTIVES: This report presents infant mortality statistics from the linked birth/infant death data set (linked file)-1995 period data by a variety of maternal and infant characteristics. Trends in birthweight-specific infant mortality rates from 1985-95 are also discussed. METHODS: Descriptive tabulations of data from the linked file are presented. The data include infant deaths in 1995, which are linked to their corresponding birth certificates, whether the birth occurred in 1995 or 1994. The denominator used to compute infant mortality rates is the National Center for Health Statistics (N

Variations in Cause-of-Death Determination for Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths.

OBJECTIVES: To quantify and describe variation in cause-of-death certification of sudden unexpected infant deaths (SUIDs) among US medical examiners and coroners. METHODS: From January to November 2014, we conducted a nationally representative survey of US medical examiners and coroners who certify infant deaths. Two-stage unequal probability sampling with replacement was used. Medical examiners and coroners were asked to classify SUIDs based on hypothetical scenarios and to describe the evidence considered and investigative procedures used for cause-of-death determination. Frequencies and we

Newborn Auditory Brainstem Response and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)-the sudden and unexplained death of a seemingly healthy infant, < 1 year old-may be associated with abnormalities in the brain regions that underlie breathing and arousal during sleep. While post-mortem studies suggest abnormalities in SIDS infants' brainstems, there are no studies of these infants' brainstem function before death. One way to assess the function of the brainstem is with auditory brainstem response (ABR), a routine hearing-screening method that noninvasively measures the brainstem's response to sound. We hypothesized that anomalies in newborn

Cardiac rhabdomyoma: an uncommon culprit in sudden infant death.

Sudden death in infants remains a common and poorly understood cause of childhood mortality in the USA. Pediatric cardiac tumors, although rare, may underlie some cases of unexplained sudden infant death. Autopsy is a crucial diagnostic step in these cases, as both gross and microscopic examination of the heart may uncover occult cardiac tumors. Rhabdomyomas are the most common cardiac tumors in childhood and may result in arrythmia and sudden death. We present a case of sudden death in a healthy 5-month-old infant which initially appeared "SIDS-like" until thorough histological analysis revea

Central and peripheral chemoreceptors in sudden infant death syndrome.

The pathogenesis of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) has been ascribed to an underlying biological vulnerability to stressors during a critical period of development. This paper reviews the main data in the literature supporting the role of central (e.g. retrotrapezoid nucleus, serotoninergic raphe nuclei, locus coeruleus, orexinergic neurons, ventral medullary surface, solitary tract nucleus) and peripheral (e.g. carotid body) chemoreceptors in the pathogenesis of SIDS. Clinical and experimental studies indicate that central and peripheral chemoreceptors undergo critical development during

Rituals of infant death: defining life and Islamic personhood.

This article is about the recognition of personhood when death occurs in early life. Drawing from anthropological perspectives on personhood at the beginnings and ends of life, it examines the implications of competing religious and customary definitions of personhood for a small sample of young British Pakistani Muslim women who experienced miscarriage and stillbirth. It suggests that these women's concerns about the lack of recognition given to the personhood of their fetus or baby constitute a challenge to customary practices surrounding burial as a Muslim. The article suggests that these w

Hypoxia at the heart of sudden infant death syndrome?

Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is a significant clinical problem without an accepted pathological mechanism, but with multiple conflicting models. Mutations in a growing number of genes have been found postmortem in SIDS cases, notably genes encoding ion channels. This can only account for a minority of cases, however. Our recent work on a novel mouse model of SIDS suggests a potentially more widespread role for cardiac arrhythmia in SIDS without needing to invoke the inheritance of abnormal ion-channel genes. We propose a model for SIDS pathogenesis whereby postnatal hypoxia leads to del

Sarcomeric gene mutations in sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

In developed countries, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) represents the most prevalent cause of death in children between 1 month and 1 year of age. SIDS is a diagnosis of exclusion, a negative autopsy which requires the absence of structural organ disease. Although investigators have confirmed that a significant percentage of SIDS cases are actually channelopathies, no data have been made available as to whether other sudden cardiac death-associated diseases, such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), could be responsible for some cases of SIDS. The presence of a genetic mutation in the sa

Sudden infant death from dilated cardiomyopathy with endocardial fibroelastosis.

A four-month-old female with no previous medical history suddenly collapsed and failed to recover despite 2h of resuscitation. An autopsy showed marked cardiomegaly (88g) with prominent dilatation of the left ventricle and a whitish opacity on the endocardial surface. The ductus arteriosus was patent, but both orifices were severely stenosed. Microscopically, the endocardium showed pronounced thickening with laminar deposition of elastic and collagen fibers. Additionally, there was a mixture of myocardial fibers with a marked "wavy" appearance and a scattering of mild interstitial lymphocytic

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome: review of implicated genetic factors.

Genetic studies in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) have been motivated by clinical, epidemiological, and/or neuropathological observations in SIDS victims, with subsequent pursuit of candidate genes in five categories: (1) genes for ion channel proteins based on electrocardiographic evidence of prolonged QT intervals in SIDS victims, (2) gene for serotonin transporter based on decreased serotonergic receptor binding in brainstems of SIDS victims, (3) genes pertinent to the early embryology of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) (and with a link to the 5-HT system) based on reports of ANS dy

Cardiac potassium channel dysfunction in sudden infant death syndrome.

Life-threatening arrhythmias have been suspected as one cause of the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), and this hypothesis is supported by the observation that mutations in arrhythmia susceptibility genes occur in 5-10% of cases. However, the functional consequences of cardiac potassium channel gene mutations associated with SIDS and how these alleles might mechanistically predispose to sudden death are unknown. To address these questions, we studied four missense KCNH2 (encoding HERG) variants, one compound KCNH2 genotype, and a missense KCNQ1 mutation all previously identified in Norwegia

Multiple serotonergic brainstem abnormalities in sudden infant death syndrome.

CONTEXT: The serotonergic (5-hydroxytryptamine [5-HT]) neurons in the medulla oblongata project extensively to autonomic and respiratory nuclei in the brainstem and spinal cord and help regulate homeostatic function. Previously, abnormalities in 5-HT receptor binding in the medullae of infants dying from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) were identified, suggesting that medullary 5-HT dysfunction may be responsible for a subset of SIDS cases. OBJECTIVE: To investigate cellular defects associated with altered 5-HT receptor binding in the 5-HT pathways of the medulla in SIDS cases. DESIGN, S

Sudden infant death syndrome and complications in other pregnancies.

BACKGROUND: The likelihood of recurrence of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is an issue of biological, clinical, and legal interest. Obstetric complications are associated with an increased risk of SIDS and are likely to recur in subsequent pregnancies. We postulated that women whose infants died from SIDS would be more likely to have had obstetric complications in their other pregnancies. METHODS: We linked national UK databases of maternity-hospital discharges, perinatal deaths, and death certifications. We studied 258 096 women who had consecutive births in Scotland between 1985 and 20

Nasal and intrapulmonary haemorrhage in sudden infant death syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Fresh intrapulmonary and oronasal haemorrhages in cases of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) might be markers for accidental or intentional smothering inappropriately diagnosed as SIDS. AIM: To compare the incidence, epidemiological association, and inter-relation of nasal haemorrhage, intrapulmonary haemorrhage, and intrathoracic petechiae in infant deaths certified as SIDS. METHODS: In SIDS cases from a large nationwide case-control study, a wide range of variables were compared in cases with and without reported nasal haemorrhage and, in a subgroup of cases, in those with an

Histopathology of the conduction system in sudden infant death.

Because ventricular fibrillation or other arrhythmia have been suggested as a cause of unexplained sudden infant death, many authors focused their studies on the conduction system especially in the 1970s. These studies were not conclusive and many pathologists have abandoned the study of the conduction system. We have reviewed the conduction system of 87 sudden infant death cases between 15 days and 1 year old: 55 were SIDS cases; 17 had mild lesions insufficient to explain death and 15 cases were sudden explained deaths considered as controls. Fetal dispersion of the AV node and/or His bundle
